- Of the over 1,000 scale models entered in this year's WonderFest model contest, we were most drawn to this absolutely gorgeous original scratch-built spaceship design by modelmaker Craig Dowell. Craig--a self-taught amateur modeler--has been working on this "Auxiliator 4" maintenance ship of his own design on and off for eight years, and walks us through the intricate exterior and interior details he's meticulously fleshed out. Displayed in a custom eye-catching frame, this ship was a model we kept coming back to look at all weekend at WonderFest!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing comments! I really appreciate all of the positive feedback :) I'm working on a new ship for next year's Wonderfest (doing a collaboration with my oldest daughter who is a very talented artist) and I hope/plan to be at the 2024 Wonderfest. If you are able to attend next year, please stop by and say "Hi!". There were so many awesome models this year - I was completely blown away by the immense talent that was on display (took a ton of pictures)!!! And Norm and Josh from Tested... Super nice guys! I almost didn't do the interview because I was so nervous, but they really helped put me at ease... And thus this rambling interview proceeded :) Again, thank you all so much, you're the best!!
world building is everything for space ships. Makes everything feel so much more grounded. I vastly prefer it to random kitbashing. This fine gentleman deserves a job as a concept designer...he has incredible skill and a very creative mind. Could easily see him doing some design work for a show like the expanse. Hard sci-fi seems to be his forte.
I'm his daughter and it's so interesting that you say that because The Expanse is his absolute favorite Sci Fi show. He even made one of the walls in his bedroom look like the interior of a spaceship after being so impressed by the sets they created for that show.
@@evelyndowell3248 Seriously, encourage him to try for a design job. He has far too much natural talent for it to be wasted XD
@@hraefn1821I will, thank you!!
Hah, awesome thread, and yeah i agree, i also commented on how exciting things can get if you get immersed into it.
I still have to start on the Expanse, as i do like Hard Sci-fi, so i did not recognize the style from that specifically.
But yeah, i was thinking a similar thing, he should be doing this professionally, either for movies/TV or an upscale toy or kit brand.
With the different modules and panels, it's like a "build your own" set, a playhouse in space, i probably would''ve love that as a kid, or, as an adult.
In future time, greeblies might be made from kits like this.
I really appreciate your feedback - thank you so much! I'm going to shift my efforts into high gear (no more taking years to get something out the door).
I like how excited Norm gets about this stuff, it's infectious. You can tell it's not an interview but a genuine interest.
100% agree, Norm's enthusiasm is infectious. Superb as always. What an amazing model... Inspiring for a Dad of one to see what can be done with some real hard work and passion 🤩
Video doesn't do this piece justice.. it was incredible to see it in person.. soo glad you chose to show this one off and talk to the creator.. epic 😊🤘🏼🇺🇲
Wow... Thank you!
I love spaceships that aren't just battleships, this is brilliant design work and model work.
THAT'S MY DAD!!!
You should be proud!
@@briandeschene8424 U spelled "most" as "should".
He’s been an artistic wizard since he was very very young!!! Always mindful of perfection (crazy …awesome…perfection
Evelyn, I am a proud proud proud too!!
Proud….Mama ♥️😊
That recessed display! I want that for everything. Really elevates this already great piece!
I absolutely love this type on content. Norm is genuinely interested in the process of building that ship. The ship is amazing and this maker will only get better! I look forward to seeing more of his incredible work!
i love the design because so much of it makes sense.
Wow Craig!!!!! I can’t even believe this !!! That looks amazing!!!! Congratulations ❤
Thank you Colleen! :)
Sweet name! Beautiful ship. Lighting, shadows, details
What a beauty of a build
The lighting on that display is incredible!
Well deserved Gold award winner. There was detail upon detail upon detail as you got closer to this fantastic model. Everywhere you looked there was something more interesting than the last time you looked at it.
I can't handle how sharp and detailed and perfect everything looks. Usually small stuff has... waviness. But this is just, flawless straight edges
Excellent build. Looks like a great idea for another ship on Empyrion.
The panel work alone is astonishingly well done!
What an amazing model and so well presented. Thanks for sharing
It's beautiful. It looks like it belongs in space.
It's one thing to build a spaceship with a wild design. But it's another level to give it function, depth and a "purpose". I really like the idea of "Ok, here's this thing - how would this work in real life?"... 😎🤟
Overall nice-- good concept. The best detail for me was the open, force-field contained access corridor that keeps on moving into the ship. Very nice.
This ship is a masterpiece!
What I can say? It's so well detailed that it could be used in some (not so) old sci-fi TV show, before CGI became so widespread. He is a very talented modeler😃
Honestly my favorite model I've seen
Easily the best ship in the room. Crazy good.
That's a great model, and i love the thought behind it.
And in a way also i think of that ship as a "dad", as in, it's not the star fighter, or empire flagship, no, it's the real people, the kind of people that you need around, aka dad.
It inspires me to design a maintenance ship as well, and i look forward to picturing myself on it, and into whatever adventure that comes to mind.
Wow. That is an incredible ship! Love those interiors!
Inspirational! I'm writing a sci-fi novel and the main character has his own spaceship. I have been wanting to build a model of that ship forever. Seeing this guy build his own ship model gets me thinking I need to do the same for my ship.
If I may, don't start with a finished model (styrene and paint), but rather with cardboard and/or foam core board. This way you can create a tangible representation to write on, but as the writing progresses you are likely to need some changes (like moving the airlock from the belly to the side to allow for a specific scene to take place). When you're done with the writing, then you can take the changes made to the model in the text and THEN build a final, styrene, metal and lighting model.
Wow, that is freaking amazing!!
Dude! I am genuinely impressed and inspired! Maybe its time to put my cad skills to fun?
A spectacular build!
I would watch a TV series or movie with this ship as one of the showpieces. There really isn't enough film or TV involving civilian non-combatant starships. The only one that comes to mind for me is probably Firefly and the Serenity, or maybe something from an anime like the salvage ship from Black Rose.
Pretty damn nice even if incomplete! Respect!
Stunning!!! Love it! 😎
Fantastic always great to see Norm good job
Amazing! The tiny bays hold image with whatever camera Norm's photog is using. Like tiny little sets. I almost expect to see crew running around inside of them. Very nice!
Incredible model, very talented artist! Thanks for another great video sharing the WonderFest experience. Kudos to Norm and the Tested team!
Very original & realistic looking spaceship model (& unique display). Really enjoying your WonderFest series. I've always wanted to attend.
That’s gorgeous
I recently learned how kapton tape/film is used heavily in space to regulate heat, and that’s what looks like gold film. I think color on a spaceship is realistic if there is a reason for it.
Dude that is awesome
Hello from Boston Massachusetts YOU ROCK DUDE 😎
I want to explore this in a game. It's so beautiful and unique. The model looks like literal witchcraft it's awe inducing!
Awesome video Adam and norm sir
Beautiful model.
Very cool and imaginative
Awesome stuff!
Had no idea this was happening in Louisville. I'm definitely there next year!
What a gorgeous build!!! Loved the discussion of his progress in learning, experimenting, and making decisions on the project over time.
From Adam's 14 year spacesuit to this gentleman's 8 year spaceship, one of the most useful, encouraging, inspiring things I carry from Tested and the book Every Tool's a Hammer is the patience and persistence to take a wildly long time on a personal build. Some builds will take a long time both because of and as a part of life. They become a part of your lifestyle as a maker, an era in your story. I am very grateful to be given this permission, this release from the pressure of time based productivity. It's ok for a personal passion build to be a long journey. It's not a waste of time, it's an evolution of process. This is a healing thing to learn to spite the cacophony of judgmental voices nagging otherwise.
Craig's design process reminds me of Ron Cobb's approach to "What does this do and how does it do that?"
Beautiful build!!
The model, the colors and especially the lower front end all reminds me very much of the spaceships used as the front cover for the Larry Niven books back in the day
That was cool
The case makes it!!!!
Reminds me of something you'd see in an Aliens movie. Or Homeworld. Very awesome!
mindblowing!
Nice.
Beautiful ship. Original trilogy Lucas would reach climax seeing this
That's phenomenal. I've been tempted to start a long term kitbash project. Work on it here and there like this guy. I've actually started to collect little bits a pieces so I might start poking around to find a little more and get started after seeing this. I love the color scheme it makes it perfect.
Very cool.
Very Nice Work!! it has a certain Star Wars meets Alien feel to it, specially with the exterior paneling along with the access bays, I like it. Keep it up dude!
It does a very Babylon 5 feel to it. A plus in my book.
This is how you build a propper scifi soace ship model that would be perfect as a hero model for a movie and shots and hold up under handling and all the parts and pieces move to be able to position stuff
If I was one of these rich guys I would try to buy this for my private collection
Wow..he has a foundation for a new universe of ships, characters, and lore. Does anyone know how he did? Did he place?
I got gold for it!
❤
Hey, Adam, love the videos, I was wondering if you had any insight into the Allen Pan cease and desist notice?
Beautiful model - did it place at all in the competition?
Yep, he took home a gold for it.
Yes! He ended up with gold!
Can you make a video about Alan Pan getting SLAP suited by Warner Media?
Norm, I want to see the Raiders of the Lost Ark diorama!
Did you use styrene from Evergreen Scale Models? I worked there a long time ago
Oh yeah... A lot of Evergreen styrene is in this model!
Just imagine in the future when technology advances to the point where it's possible to just randomly decide to build a spaceship in your garage and go to space. I think there just might be a lot of people that would jump at the chance to do it.
woot
Finaly, i know how magnets work!
lol, I noticed that too but maybe he explained it because he could have used a thin sheet of metal and just one magnet.
also i guess Norm is the wrong person to explain magnets to XD
It´s a facinating build still
@@rbrentw Also, your solution would spare a magnet (but might not be as secure)
Yeah, I was trying to explain how there were different modules that used magnets for dual purpose... First, to hold the module/piece on to the ship and also to pass power to the LED's within each separate module. I used two magnets - one linked to positive and the other connected to negative terminal. I did a terrible job explaining that - apologies.
@@infinite-indefinity no worries, great job on the build!
Do you have Allen's "busting feels good" shirt?
Does the modeler have a web presence --??
Lol well we know he didn’t use Vanta black, but I’m curious if he used Black, Black 2.0, or Black 3.0
So, I actually used Back 3.0 the first time around - but wasn't super pleased with the result. I ended up tossing out the background pieces (which are made of XPS foam) and redoing it. The second time around I used Musou (airbrushed it on) and loved the result!
@@infinite-indefinity oh lol dope, I was mostly kidding but good to know! What didn’t you like about B3.0 that Musou did better?
It just seemed to pick up a tad more light than the Musou. I really wanted to create a background that was as dark as possible. The Black 3.0 was good stuff, but the Musou (in my opinion) was a little darker. I had never tried Musou, so I didn't think it was going to be any different than B3.0, but ended up being quite satisfied with the result.@@AlliePaints
@@infinite-indefinity awesome! I’ll keep that in mind if I ever need to do something like this!
Hey Adam care to explain the unaired mouse cereal episode of Mythbusters?
Kit bashing isn’t really scratch building. But regardless, damn nice
He created pieces from scratch using onshape!
Yeah, it started out as a kit bash, but those kit pieces became so buried by various layers of styrene, PLA and resin pieces over time that they're no longer visible anymore. The kit bashing portion was only used in the beginning to establish the skeleton of the ship and then it was skinned, and re-skinned, and re-skinned again (ad nauseum)... :)
Hooot
borderlands W game
He's going for realism but everything is oriented as if there's a down, or a direction gravity pulls, which means it must have some kind of unrealistic artificial gravity. I guess that's fine but personally I prefer ships that look like they belong in space where there is no gravity. The ISS doesn't look like an airplane in space. And everything inside it isn't oriented as if there's gravity. It's personal preference, I suppose. It's still very cool.
Excellent response... I really struggled with this as I imagined how humans would undertake maintenance work on a spacecraft operating in zero gravity.
I've spent all my time in Earth's gravity, so I found it difficult to escape my bias :) For this reason, I felt the need to replicate work spaces that resembled something I could personally relate to (a distinct floor & ceiling - establishing "up" & "down" reference points). My thinking was "these are the conditions we humans are used to working in", so if technology could closely replicate these conditions on a ship, it would be much easier for the crew to orient themselves and perform their tasks. Of course this design means that the ship would require "gravity plates" - a technology that does not exist.
You may want to look into what Discovery/CNN is doing to Allan Pan. The blowback could end up hurting you too considering you make RUclips videos and your image is so tied to Mythbusters.
You would like the channel Studson Studio

Help Allen Pan.
Can anyone actually give Norm the word/tap on the shoulder? Getting a bit thirsty Norm. Let Adam know as well.
Adam you have to go help out Alan pan he’s getting threatened by discovery for making mythbuster merch after they stole his videos

You failed at that kid & you didn't even 'comment' on the video content so another failed attempt at attention seeking 😅
