  • By 1989 Dave Scott was a six-time IRONMAN champion and Mark Allen, defeated in his previous attempts, a feared contender. This time, though, all bets were off. From the start, Mark hung on to Dave with mind-numbing intensity.

    That is THE race, unbelievable. It got me motivated to want to try triathlon in 1989, then got me motivated to qualify for Kona years later and motivated to go hard on race day in Hawaii in 2014. Best sports moment and rivalry ever.

    I recommend reading Ironwar, your training and competitions will never be the same again. Dave Scott is the best endurance athlete of all time.

    (Love the 80's style of the race back then :))

    What an amazing example of guts and pushing your body to the absolute limit. My friend Matt Fitzgerald in his book Iron War talks about this as one of the examples of someone (Dave Scott) reaching almost absolute failure physically. Usually we tend to quit mentally long before our body shuts us down. It all comes down to Mental Toughness.

    @aracergirl
    1989 was like a peak in endurance sports. It was also the year Greg LeMond won the Tour de France by 8 seconds. That was cinematic as well.

    Steve, actually if you look up what Allen has said, he doesn't think the times would be all that different. The Run course back in 1989 was catered to making up the muscle use early in the run with a few smaller hills to help stretch out the legs, the run course now is much flatter and therefore the runners tighten up quicker. I forget what website this is on, but if you read around you will see his view on this.

    @DayOfSuffering Also, there are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO many reasons the times in Kona fluctuate as they do. And one major reason being that everything must click to extract the seconds per mile more than the field in order to nail a time such as Luc, Mark, Dave, Norman, Macca, Crowie. All these guys are so close. The wind, heat, humidity changes in Kona EVERY SINGLE DAY and from Aug through Oct, these conditions are typically bad and unpredictable. Check out '93. 65 people went under 9 hours? Dope?

    Well, THE race. let's get another point of view. 1989, Greg Lemond wins final stage of TDF by speed over 50 km p. hour. amazing in this era ! ( see Durianrider video on YT) . EPO was coming up. how come Mark Allen never finished Hawaii sound the years before, this time (& the following years, 5 times !) deals the whole thing & wins ? that"s a good question.

    It is proofed! What do u think is the reason he never came back to IM Germany?
    To be honest from man to man... we both now, there were a buch of athletes doped. Those times they reached at Kona were never reached again.

    @DayOfSuffering I doubt 65 people doped heavily in '93... that year had superior conditions! Just perfect compared to most other years. I'm not defending anyone nor that any of these guys and many others haven't "used" something... Proof of claim just stands for something. Anybody can sling slander at another.

  • @DayOfSuffering

    Yeah! But he was tested Positive with EPO Doping!

    @DayOfSuffering Well, I have never doubted that many, if not most top athletes, worldwide, dope in some way. But, you are making a definitive claim on a video site. I can only KNOW why I make the choices I do. I can't KNOW why somebody else makes their choices... such as whether or not to return to race they won. That's hardly proof of anything but that he just simply never went back. I just thought perhaps you may have had some real proof. Not speculation.
