I love how there’s room for this tale to be in no way supernatural but the group psychosis of a bunch of very repressed men. I wonder if CAS was inspired to write this story by that bit in Herodotus’ histories about the Aphrodite statue in a temple in Corinth that they had to set guards around at night due to all the men breaking in to make sweet love to it.
Clark Ashton Smith ranks right up there with Lovecraft in my opinion. I would LOVE to hear Gordon do a reading of "The Colossus of Ylourgne". It's my favorite.
Sheer writing skill CAS regularly beats Lovecraft it's just a shame he didn't have the cosmic scope and focussed ideas - CAS was writing to keep his parents alive in the depression. Still, Lovecraft threw out a huge amount of his own writing being such a ruthless editor. CAS might be an idea of what a loose Lovecraft may have written.
@@Eris123451 yeah, he’s really rubbing good old Randolphs face in it. ‘Oh I’m dead in a tomb Randolph don’t you know.. ’ *secretly buggers off to the dreamworld*
Naw, I was visiting the frozen wastes but managed to eat some perogies & drink some Lucky Lager -- now I have enough gas to heat Hades for months! Cheers Warren -- the dead may sleep, but they also eat!
I think Horrorbabs is skirting around the outright necrophilia CAS threw in for free advertising. Pre-internet click bait :) Game of Thrones lore in Necromany in Na'at. GRRM borrowed the name of the island Missandei came from I'm guessing?
I guess these monks didn't read Matthew where Jesus said, "And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee". A bunch of holy dudes so upset at a hot statue that they remove their own eyeballs would also be an interesting horror story! Also when I heard the name Brother Louie, the song started playing in my head. lol Thx Ian!
These later penny dreadful type stories are my favorites. I actually have a collection by H.P. Lovecraft where he goes over his favorite work by other horror writers and I recognize some of the stories from this show from the book. I really love hearing new life being breathed into these older stories 👍
Piety without struggle is no Virtue and is often more fragile than spun glass. The words of Condemnation from such that practice such cowardice, are less than wind.
Venus must’ve had more “success” at the location of “The Feast in the Abbey”. No ghosts but still a good macabre story - excellently narrated - as usual.
Missed it by 👌 this much but I'm glad I didn't miss it entirely! Imagine if you will, walking into your local library and to your delight Ian was the librarian at the desk offering to assist you..you're awesome buddy rock on with your bad self🐙 Cthulhu is watching lol
I have to admit, this story made me laugh. Depend upon sex starved monks to project their carnal desires on an inanimate object. Whether CAS intended this to be such or not, this is a case of psychological issues, not the supernatural!
A troop of bible bangers are tempted by the awakening of normal and healthy desires I love it The statue could not take that ostentatiously pious monk or any one else any where they didn't already want to go
You fool, Warren is dead Can you tell me the meaning behind this. My name happens to be Warren and I heard it one night and thought what the fuck and felt somewhat creepy

Great tale. Always loved this story. When I think of Benedictine monks however it always brings Cadfael by Ellis Peters to mind.
Excellent as always. Thank you Mr. Gordon and Horror Babble.

Hurrah for more Klarkash-ton!
High Priest to you! and...me, too!
I love the stories of clark ashton smith told with the magic of the narrative of Ian gordon
Warren last sighted on Easter Sunday disguised as a ghoul and heading for Kadath.
Keep up the good work fella and stay safe.
Sounds like the something that Randolph Carter might get up to to me ?

That's numberwang.

My most favorite, of Clark Ashton Smith. Long wait worthwhile. 🙂
Great story, elevated by an even greater narration! Ian would be the perfect keeper for « The Call of Cthulhu » tabletop RPG!
That was an intriguing tale. I do enjoy C. A. Smith's work. Thank you. I do hope you had a Happy Easter. Have a lovely Tuesday💖
This is an amazing story of religion and horror. Always the best stories go hand and hand with these 2.
Horror babbel I just adore your speaking voice .I feel it enhances every narration you do🖤🖤🖤
I cannot wait to stop and listen to this!!!! Still running at the moment tho. BRB
Worth the wait. Loved this tale!
Great narrations. Thanks Ian
Lets be real, these guys just fell for a proto-waifu, which just so happened to be cursed.
Most excellent choice of illustration.

"You Fool! Warren is dead". 😃
This stuff is so dang good. I'm so envious.
the monks praying didnt stop him becoming the prey.
Oog is great name!
The timing of this tale...makes me smirk a bit.
Ah klarkash-ton. Nice
This story left me feeling a little, uh, anxious if you know what I mean.
Excellent as always, Ian.
Love your voice ❤
Instead of brother Louise, Venus was the one that has become @rock hard “!!
Warren may be dead(you fool), but his/her legend lives on, much like HorrorBabble, thank you for your time and readings!!!👌👍😷

Uh huh it's the statues fault 🤨😑🤣..sure buddy.
Thank you from a fan.
Never liked Smith but this one was disturbing in a good way

It's a line from "The Statement of Randolph Carter" by H.P. Lovecraft
