I’m using dollar tree yarn to make a king size blanket for my bed. The total is somewhere around $65! Soooooo much cheaper than getting other brands of yarn, and I absolutely love how the worsted acrylic yarn feels.

That's so great! How many skeins is it taking you to make your blanket? We have a king sized bed and it would be so great to be able to make a blanket for our bed and not spend a ton on yarn.

@@jennifertrusty6997 I’m doing a series of squares with borders which wasn’t my original plan so I need to adjust my price and it will probably be somewhere around $80 now that I added borders around the squares. For my original measurements I was making squares that were approximately 7x7. I then decided I wanted to add a border around my squares and they are now approximately 7 1/4 by 7 1/4. With one skein I was able to make 3-4 squares without the border so I needed 144 squares for my king bed so I needed 24 skeins of each color (I’m doing two colors) now that I’ve added a border to my squares I’ll need additional skeins. Im working on making the squares now without borders and then will buy the yarn I need for the borders after I get all the squares done. Im guessing I’ll need an additional 12 skeins, (6 of each color) plus a color for the border of the big project. So now I’m thinking this might be closer to $100 project :(

I have used the dollar tree yarn to make shawls and lapghans for the nursing home near me. I usually donate them around the first of December. Using this yarn allows me to make more shawls to donate and I really like to feel of it. I make these all year long and can usually donate 30 or 35 shawls each year.

It didn't cost a ridiculous amounts of money, to buy each of the 5 girls their own skein of yarn. I just love how well the yarn is working for us. Thanks for doing this video, I don't feel bad about being thrifty now.😂

I agree ! The dollar tree yarn is awesome! One thing everyone should know though, is that not every dollar tree has all the yarns in all the colors, and they don’t get consistent shipments.
It will depend on when you go what they will have in stock. So make sure you have enough before starting your project. I make a habit of stopping at every dollar tree I pass by to check their yarn stock. I pick up what I need until I have enough, and THEN start my project.

I love this yarn, but my local Dollar Tree is small and the selection isn't very good. I wish I could order smaller amounts than 12 skeins of the same color as a minimum order from your website. I wouldn't even mind if the minimum order was 12 skeins total (of all colors), but 12 of one color is too much.

    Hey Elise, great video!
I have used the Dollar Tree yarn for a long time now and there's two things you need to know: 1) Colors for everything but the Tweed so far, change about 6x/year. You never know when the colors will change out. Also the JUST ACTIVE is really nice to work with too.
    2) The cotton splits like nobody's business. It's great for school projects and crafting but crocheting...there's other options out there.
I LOVE the chenille one! I made Peep Bunnies with it and they are so cute and fun.

    • @dhrachth1
      @dhrachth1 Год назад +5

I mostly eyeball them. The last one I made I used my 48 needle knitting machine and jotted down the stitch/row counts which are as follows:
      Gray/Charcoal Cardigan
12 Balls of Dollar Tree Acrylic Yarn
      Back Panels x2
Cast on 43 stitches on knitting machine
      120 Rows
      Put on 5.5 mm needles
      12 Rows 2:2 ribbing
      Front Panels x2
Cast on 34 stitches on knitting machine
      120 Rows
      Put on 5.5 mm needles
      12 Rows 2:2 ribbing
      Sleeves x2
Cast on circular on knitting machine
      88 Rows
      Put on 4.0 mm needles
      12 Rows 1:1 ribbing
      Collar
Pick up 110 stitches with 5.5 mm needles on each side
      12 Rows 2:2 ribbing
      Pockets x2
Cast on 24 stitches on knitting
      24 Rows
      Put on 5.5 mm needles
      4 rows of 2:2 ribbing
I usually use 2 colors for these, doing one panel of each set a different color and/or switching colors for the trim. I've also made them all one color.
When I've done them by hand, the stitch counts are approximately the same, except I do the back as one panel instead of two pieces with a seam up the middle.
I've only made these for myself and some of the ladies in my family and we're all under 5 feet tall and 100 pounds-ish--so this is oversized and slouchy for us--so gauge swatch and size accordingly.

I’ve found the cotton yarn to be much softer than the usual more expensive cotton I purchased in the past. It makes it much easier to crochet with too.

I have some of the Dollar Tree worsted and knit a pair of leg warmers for my daughter out of some of it. I found it to be every bit as good a quality as the other Premier acrylic yarns. On your fox, the fix on the difference between the white yarn and the tweed would have been to drop down a hook size for the white. Even in the same yarns, there is sometimes minute differences between the thickness of different colors. We adjust.

Just happened to come across this very educational video as I am a newbie crochet practitioner. Here in the Philippines, we have really cheap yarns for half a dollar, and I've never worked the slowest in my life. The fibers (I don't know the right term, sorry) get ruffled so easily that doing a double crochet takes me a whole 10 seconds just to avoid all the tangles. But thanks for this video, I learned a lot in terms of picking yarns for my projects.

I have bought Premire Cotton Yarn from a different store to use to make dish cloths. I found that the strands of yarn tended to separate as I worked with it ! I was really dissapointed with the finished look and went back to my former brand. Has anyone noticed that with the cotton yarn from Dollar Tree ? I'm hesitant to purchase some because of the issue I had !

A HUGE consideration for me is cleaning the item. I’m a realist; all of the stuff I make is going in the washer/dryer. That’s me and everyone I make stuff for. The closest any of it will get to being hand washed is the gentle cycle. So…
How well does it hold up to the washer/dryer? Does it shrink or relax? Does it seem to shed or felt up? Does it get soft, stiff, smooth, scratchy?
Some yarns change drastically after a couple laps in the washer. Lionbrand Homespun actually gets softer, although it does seem to develop a halo, and fringes get rather worn very quickly.
Would you mind adding post washing quality to your reviews?
    Thank you for your time.

Im in the Uk and we have a store called Poundland (basically what Dollartree is) and I really like the wools they have. I picked up some Aran wool to use alongside some more expensive Aran wool for a jumper I'm making myself and honestly I think it's slightly better quality. Great colour, lovely and warm, just a shame they no longer stock that particular colour anymore as I'd have happily picked up some more for a different project

I live in a yarn desert, so finding yarn at Dollar Tree was a pleasant surprise. I've been using the Just Yarn Tweed and am pleased with the results so far. It's no longer $1, but $1.25 isn't bad considering I can't find anything else like it in my town.

I use a lot of Dollar Tree yarns for granny square afghans. I trust the "Just Yarn"/Just Active/Just Chenille/etc. yarns made by Premier more than I do the Crafter's Square yarns (which seem to be thinner and don't seem to indicate which company made them or where they were made); however, they all make great granny squares, and are good for colorwork & small projects. I've noticed that the Just Chenille is thinner than the Bernat Baby Blanket I often use for baby blankets, so I wouldn't go any larger than an 8mm hook with Just Chenille in an afghan (vs. the 10mm hook I use with Bernat Baby Blanket on afghans).

Sometimes I can find a Premier brand, but it's usually a dollar tree brand that's not as soft. I found one grey tweed in the premier & I love it, but I've not found more of it yet. I'm still hoping i will someday, though!! -Liz

New subscriber here, so glad to meet you. I am a widow age 73 and have been knitting since I was in Girl Scouts and my wonderful mother was our leader. We each made a square potholder for our mothers for Christmas. It was so much work for my small fingers holding those big needles. . But it got me totally hooked and I loved it. The scouts had such a hard time that my mother after much instruction and starting them over eventually finished each girls potholder but not mine... I was able after restarting many times to finish the potholder. In the early 1970's as I became a housewife and then mother I had a baby hat and bootie business. I had 15 places that paid me outright and then marked them up to sell.I mostly sold them in hospital gift shops and I did very well. I sold the booties for $1.00 a pair and .90 cents a pair if they purchased a dozen at a time. Such wonderful times and it built my confidence as a new wife and mother. I was able to knit all of our Christmas presents for our extended families. Thank you for explaining The Dollar Tree yarn. I love it and the store in general is great for my small town where I have lived for 53 years as we don't have a yarn shop anymore or any craft stores at all. I am so looking forward to all your videos and it was so nice meeting you. I adore your fox!! I make a kitty about the same size and little boys and girls, blankets, slippers, shawls and scarfs and cute doggie items. Love 💕😘 from Debbie and Dexter-Dog my sweet tiny rescued Chihuahua companion living a quiet crafty life in southern California. 🙋🐾😋❤️✝️🐝💞👍🦩🏡🤞🏠🙏🙃🏝️😊🌹🌻

I have used the Just Yarn in both the Worsted and the Active styles. I have only knitted with them, and they worked up virtually identically in the beanies I made. I like the feel of the Worsted yarn better, and would feel confident that the chemo caps would be soft enough for the sensitive skin of chemo patients. Not quite as sure about the Active yarn being soft enough.

Hi Elise! Love your videos. My tip when shopping in-person for yarn is to bring a sole purpose reusable shopping bag with a piece of tissue paper in it. I lay the tissue on the bottom of the shopping carriage (which rarely gets cleaned) to avoid dirt, glitter, etc. from getting on the yarn I'm buying. After checking out you can toss the tissue & use your nice clean bag for your new yarn. Happy shopping everyone!

I'm from the UK and I really do wish we had some Dollar Tree shops here, mind you I'm from Cornwall so perhaps they wouldn't come this far down anyway. There was a wool fest at the Aldi stores but never found that out until it was gone!, I'm trying to teach myself how to crochet, the problem I have is that I used to knit many moons ago and trying to understand crochet patterns seems to me to be a minefield. It would be nice if one of you ladies could have a pattern on your programmes and read it and show the printed version to us then actually demonstrate what it is asking us to do, I think that would be beneficial to many of us. Keep up the good work.

Denver (Colorado) Dollar Tree stores don't seem to carry yarn, at least not the 3 stores we visited. One store did have a handful (literally a small box) of yarn, but it was "Crafter's Square" brand, not Premier. I did a search for "Dollar Tree yarn" and although the description said, "Shop affordable yarn from Dollar Tree from amazing brands like Premier Yarns, Isaac Mizrahi Crafts, Lion Brand, Red Heart yarn, and more!", when I followed the link, there were none of those brands -- just Crafter's Square, and not much of that. I also could not find much in the way of organizer items featured in your other video. 🙁

I've used both of the yarns you highlighted, and I agree about the quality of the yarn. Another RUclipsr mentioned the differences she had found in the size of the skeins of these yarns as well. It is a good idea to make sure that you are choosing the bigger skeins for the money! it would have been interesting if you would have compared the price per ounce of another economy yarn like super saver or big twist for a price comparison. However, the Dollar Tree economy yarn is SOFTER than either of those brands! It is almost like comparing apples and oranges. Ordering online for free instore pickup would be a good way to get enough yarn for a large project without filling two carts etc.! Thanks for the review!

I have a lot of dollar tree stores around me and I haven't tried their yarn but I have noticed that usually they have only a couple colors of any given yarn at any given store at any given time. So even though some of the yarns come in many colors, you are really stuck with what they offer at your store or the stores that are convenient to you. The store that I was at yesterday had literally two colors of the cotton, two colors of the acrylic worsted and only white in the chenille. None of the other colors or styles.

I think the Pound yarn at craft stores when they are on sale ($6/$7) is a better investment overall, but still a great find and a great variety of colors! I'm currently working on a scrap blanket (mostly of scrap yarn I actually have), but to have variety of colors, I bought a couple of these for add to it.

OMG I loved that you made this video! Over the fall into the winter I crocheted my first sweater with the Premier Just Worsted in the color "Rose" for my best friend. The only thing was that I bought maybe around 5 or 6 skeins at one location then bought the remaining skeins when I came home for winter break. My mom & I noticed the dye lot was different between the skeins, but luckily my friend really liked it that way.
It did sort of felt slightly as I was working the body of the sweater, then as I worked the sleeves, the body felted more. Be aware of this if you want to knit/crochet a large project such as a sweater, shawl, or a blanket!
I still think this is a great budget-friendly yarn for those just starting out on knitting/crocheting, or if you just need a little bit of yarn in some of the colors they offer, while also not breaking the bank (this is important to me as a college student).

I've been crocheting for over 30 years and you just taught me something new! I never knew about the wraps per inch or even why the same weight yarn worked up different! amazing! I'll definitely keep that trick in mind to test my yarn.
Also, I've tried the just cotton yarn and it wasn't my favorite. It split a lot like it wasn't twisted enough or something. it was fine though but just didn't compare to the other budget brands. and I've been hesitant to try the other Just Yarn lines because of that but maybe I'll give the others a try now. :) Thanks!

Thank you for your video. I have used dollar tree yarn but I am a beginner and never even thought about all that you talked about . Great education. I’ll look at yarn in a totally different way.

Some are worth it like the chenille. I buy it just for scrunchies. But other yarns are not. You just have to figure the cost per yardage vs other brands and see which is cheaper.
But I live 30 minutes from even a Wal-Mart and an hour from Michael's, HL or Joann's so if I do need something in a crunch I can get it at DT.

I used both the Just Yarn Worsted and the Just Yarn Active to make caps. I actually had enough yarn left over from an adult sized cap to combine two sets of leftovers to make 3 caps from two skeins! You can't beat that price ($2.50). I do a lot of knitting for charity, and these are going to be a major way to do more for less.

I just knitted a Ranunculus in the rust tweed and last year I knitted a baby afghan and several baby outfits in the worsted. The only thing is that the tweed is a light worsted; I've used it in place of DK. The cotton is a bit lighter than Sugar & Cream. Also, Dollar Tree carries another line of yarn, not (I don't think) by Premier, and it's very acrylic-y and crummy.

Thanks for sharing! Yes, I saw the other yarn and wasn't impressed. Others in the comments have mentioned that it bleeds while you're working with it. 🧶🧶🧶

Hello Victoria! How are you doing?

OK, I didn't know the dollar tree carried yarn. And it's premier yarns, yay! I also didn't know to check the wpi when trying to choose yarns with the same weight. I knew some were thicker than others. But now I know how to check compatibility between same weight yarns. So thank you so so much for that handy tip! And definitely sharing this with all my crochet buddies out there. ❤❤

I've only used the Just Yarn Worsted. I was nervous at first so only bought 1 skein, but it turned out great (I went back & bought more!). I haven't used it for any large projects so haven't had to be concerned with matching dye lots. My closest Dollar Tree is pretty small, so doesn't have much of a selection. It's been great for amigurumi & when I only need a small amount of a color that is not a favorite so there's less hanging around when the project is complete.

Are you going to do a video with the Chenille yarn?
