I have my own 2012 Toshiba C850-1HD laptop, looking just like this one, originally with Intel i5-3230M dual core processor at 2.6ghz, 4gb ram and 500gb hdd with Windows 7. Now with Intel i5-3380M dual core processor (2.9ghz boosted to 3.6ghz using Intel Turbo Boost Perfomance monitor 2.0), 16gb ram and 2tb SSD using Windows 10 pro. Total cost to upgrade was £150.

I restored a C850D-11K a year ago, which is basically the same machine but with a very slow AMD E1 APU, running at 1.4GHz max.
It works just fine and snappy with Bodhi Linux, SSD upgrade, now 6GB of RAM and a replacement battery from Ebay.
Cost me 70 Euros altogether and is nice for watching movies, RUclips and retro gaming using DosBox. Love it.
Always good to see people caring about neglected old stuff and keeping it alive for useful purposes.

This could be so much better! If you're going to upgrade RAM then put two matching banks in as its DDR and relies on there being a pair.
Also, try using Mr.Muscle, spray it on, loose brush, massage it around then use kitchen paper to soak it up. I also use white spirit and meths on laptops, white spirit will take stickers off but they are for Currys and Dixons.
You shouldn#t ever use isopropyl alcohol as it damages a lot of things and is carcenogenic! Ventilation is crucial. I hate 'Health & Safety' but some things like caustic soda, lasers and table saws you only get wrong once.

I have a Satellite C870D, anyway to upgrade the onboard network adapters? I have tried 2 different USB WiFi 6 external adapters and download speed is still pathetic, 20-30 Mb/s. Wired Ethernet is no better. All the drivers are the newest available from the manufacturers. Running windows 10. No point for me upgrading anything else until I have much better download speed.

Hi yes i have done this in the past it saves a lot of time, backup any important data first and do a full install .

@@amkotechrepairs So if i purchased a new Samsung SSD and used their software to clone the old HDD, would that be considered a reinstall of Windows, or would I be just transferring the same problem to the new SSD?
BTW, thank you very much for answering my questions!

@@alsheremeta Dude, why even bother? Even that Samsung SSD will never reach its advertised speed before of the slow outdated SATA interface on that C870D.
*_" I have tried 2 different USB WiFi 6 external adapters and download speed is still pathetic, 20-30 Mb/s."_*
Of course it is slow, what else can you expect from your system that is way slower than what WIFI 6 can transfer? The machine is simply not up to par, get a clue already.

You should never use a regular vacuum cleaner to remove the dust, and especially not touching the board with that brush part, because of the air and dust moving into the vacuum cleaner, the whole thing gets statically charged, and spare me your comment "I never had any issue", because you were just lucky.
And as for your comment "There is hardly any thermal paste"; there should hard be any unless both surfaces weren't very flat! Thermal paste should only be in tiny spots that don't make proper contact. Use some common sense, look at how much thermal paste was pushed out when they put that fan on... that should have been a clue already. Thermal paste doesn't just evaporate... Regardless, it's good to replace old thermal paste, but just don't call it a bad thing when there isn't much on the surfaces, while it was pushed out.
And why even bother.... 4GB of memory doesn't get you very far, and to have a secure Windows OS you would need to install Windows 10... which is quite a joke considering that 4 GB of ram. Even the SSD makes not much difference, I saw someone adding an SSD too on a C850, and it still took almost 55 seconds to open the Windows desktop, while it took 65 seconds with a hard drive. You seem to ignore the fact that the C850 doesn't have the proper SATA interface to reach the potential speed of that SSD, as a result it will run similar to a hard drive.
