I don't know what all the criticism is about, I saw this Turandot on May 3rd 2022, it is my first opera, and I loved it, I could watch Liudmyla Monastryska and Yonghoon Lee sing forever, also Ermomela Jaho, all incredible to my ears and my soul.
@@williesullivan3985 That's what I love about You Tube, plenty of folks ready to tell me exactly what to think. And please go easy on the capital letters, you'll do yourself an injury. Have a dandy day.
Apparently this was a rehearsal but her voice is all over the place. I can't imagine her singing Tosca which just today read glowing reviews ......guess loud and wobbly is in.
This has to be the most overly performed opera. Every Turandot screams her head off thinking they’re Nilsson or Turner, and every Calaf tears their vocal cords trying to be Corelli.
His throat is so open, especially sideways, and his singing doesn’t appear to have suffered as many thought years ago. If you can sing that big without hurting the cords, more power to him.
I hesitated to add to the many comments but at 83, I guess will add mine. Afterall I still sing “Nessun dorma”. It seems to be the trend that this opera is pictured as a dual between a powerful dramatic soprano and an equally powerful dramatic tenor. Of course the shouting leads to the harsh attacks, warble, off pitch. Like most people nowadays, both the Russian soprano and the Ukrainian are that way. Actually Puccini composed this opera with a lot of tender passages and not just for Liu. Turandot and Calaf both have very sweet passages filled with emotion. That’s why I always go back to the beautiful recording featuring Brigit Nilsson, Jussi Bjorling and Renata Tebaldi, with Georgio Tozzi thrown in as Timur. Just the tones themselves are full of feelings and the attack notes so smooth. Bjorling didn’t do his ossia high C, but he was such a gentleman and serious scholar. He didn’t need that C to prove his high C and Db. Turandot was the early feminist speaking for the persecuted and violated women. Her last statement said it: I’ll suo nome, amor! In this evil and cruel world, one day may Love reign. Call me an old romantic but as a Christian I believe someday The King of kings and Lord of lords will reign with love!
It's just a taped dress rehearsal! Not the actual performance. So they're. Marking and blocking and just running through it and getting used to the heavy costumes, etc. People on here are critiquing it like it's the Met Performance. They shouldn't record the rehearsals.
I cannot understand why People can be so northy and cruel. ?? I think that the most incredible thing I have red about the voice for Turandot is : a soprano coloratura.!!! So,on following that stupidity Birgit Nilsson,Arstrid Varnay were both soprano-coloratura ? Please !!! Mrs Monastyrska has been singing Nabucco, Macbeth and others...So,to many ideas Turandot is the normal following after. And She is just Very Impressive.!!!
My real issue here is the complete breakdown in tempos between orchestra and singer. Seriously there are no nuances. It’s like a race to the finish for both of them. Yikes!!!
Really quite horrible. Pitch problems, vibrato problems, registration problems, an ungraceful actress, and absolutely unclear diction. There is nothing left to appreciate.
She is also under a great deal of stress with her family back in the Ukraine; and learning the choreography of a role that she had dropped from her repertoire because it has been become vocally taxing for her.
@@starlove7474 So, she was hired out of her repertoire and taken advantage of to simply be a press-vehicle for the Met, even though she sounds horrible? Yep, sounds American to me.

How beautiful voice! How beautiful music!!
Thank you!!!!
Bravo por el reto para Lyudmila !!!!
Oh dear.
So glad to see her back at the Met. She was terrific in Aida and Nabucco a few years ago.
She was HORRIBLE in Nabucco!!! And TERIBBLE in this!!!!

@@verdiguy hahaha. I like your answer.
her Aida and Tosca in Paris 2016,was the most pitch perfect and resonate and creamy Aida and Tosca I ever heard in theaters.
Turandot, costumi favolosi!!

There should be an official ban of at least 10 years on ‘Nessun dorma’.
His throat is so open, especially sideways, and his singing doesn’t appear to have suffered as many thought years ago. If you can sing that big without hurting the cords, more power to him.
Most definitely. That's the problem. Turandot can be a voice wrecker
Great! Can you set the whole opera?
Best regards

The riddle scene sounds like she's marking, which is probably the case since this is a dress rehearsal.
Maybe not. Very coreless woofy voice elsewhere to unfortunately…
She’s definitely not marking
This is the Zefirelli production revival?
Yes

Ukrainian princess....
How nice!!!!! I love it!!!!
Bravo!
Arme Tamino singing Calaf!
So-so. Can think of a hundred other performances I'd rather hear.

Bad singing is never good singing
My real issue here is the complete breakdown in tempos between orchestra and singer. Seriously there are no nuances. It’s like a race to the finish for both of them. Yikes!!!
Absolutely agree.
Stinks! They are screaming horribly! No nuances! Opera today is screaming over a mic.
Bravo!
Quite the wobble! Awful! are people deaf!
Opera singers today just scream over mics. Bad singing, out of tune and every note is ugly
Really quite horrible. Pitch problems, vibrato problems, registration problems, an ungraceful actress, and absolutely unclear diction. There is nothing left to appreciate.
I agree
It's a dress rehearsal. Give her a break. It's a great instrument nonetheless!
And don't forget she filled in at the last minute.
She is also under a great deal of stress with her family back in the Ukraine; and learning the choreography of a role that she had dropped from her repertoire because it has been become vocally taxing for her.

Too much criticism here. I've definitely heard worse. And, really, have you actually heard Netrebko sing this? Yikes!
Actually, this is better than her Aida.
Singing and acting both unspeakably bad. Scream and wobble, lurch and waddle. The Met should be ashamed of this.
