- Next month, a government report is expected to be made public on sightings of unidentified aerial phenomena, better known as UFOs. Sunday on 60 Minutes, Bill Whitaker reports on the sightings.

Will somebody convincingly show that aliens have come to Earth?
That's the growing expectation of many members of the UFO community. For seventy years, they've been confidently insisting that some fraction of the strange objects seen flitting through the atmosphere are extraterrestrial craft, piloted by otherworldly beings on a junket to our planet. But while 100 million Americans give this claim a thumbs up - confident that our skies are peppered with interstellar intruders - few scientists agree.
It's not that they don't like the idea. After all, it's hard to think of anything that would be more interesting and important than aliens in our airspace, short of the cure for death. And scientists aren't skeptical simply because interstellar travel is stunningly expensive and time consuming, although it's both of those. They demur because the evidence for this idea is seriously iffy. None of it is unambiguous enough to sway their minds.
However, judging by the more recent remarks of UFO proponents, there seems to be a crescendo of confidence that things are about to change. Well-known fans of visitation - for example Steven Greer, Richard Dolan, and Stephen Bassett, all of whom publicly and frequently expound at the many UFO conferences held each year - are saying that "disclosure" is nigh. The federal government is finally going to come clean with solid evidence about alien UFOs.
That would change this subject from one that rolls eyeballs to an accepted fact-of-the universe.
At least some of the disclosure optimism derives from the revelation in 2017 of a secret $22 million government project, begun a decade earlier and innocuously named the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program, or AATIP. The best-known results of this five-year effort were several videos taken by Navy pilots using their gun-sight infrared cameras. Some of these videos showed strange, elongated objects whose identity is uncertain. This was an encouraging sign for the disclosure enthusiasts. If the U.S. military was willing to trickle out such suggestive evidence about extraterrestrial visitors, perhaps they were on the cusp of admitting to a larger truth?
To the UFO crowd, that sounds encouraging. But it doesn't make sense.
It's sad that the UFO crowd has come to this - seemingly giving up on proving their own case and hoping that the feds will do their work for them.
To believe the government has been keeping mum about the aliens since the 1940s - surely not an easy thing to do - requires asking why. What's the motivation? It's not credible that it's because of an official fear that the public would go berserk if they were told there are saucers in the skies. One-third of them believe this already, and most have remained berserk-free.
Steven Greer, a former emergency room doctor who now takes folks on escorted tours to witness purported alien craft, has suggested a deeper reason: Extraterrestrial hardware is an existential threat to humanity's global power structure. Greer maintains that reverse engineering alien technology would lead to cheap energy for all countries, first world through third, providing a significantly higher economic standing in parts of the globe that could pose a serious challenge to western dominance.
Consequently, the powers-that-be have kept the UFO phenomenon under wraps. According to Greer, the potential disruption of alien technology is worse than the difficulty and embarrassment of keeping secrets from the public.
But does it really make sense to believe that the federal government could keep a secret of this magnitude during two generations of civil servants? Could the feds really twist the arms of all other nations to participate in such schemery?
In addition, reverse engineering alien technology is about as plausible as the tooth fairy. Imagine giving a cell phone to Ben Franklin and telling him to "reverse engineer" it so George Washington's army could better stay in touch while fighting the British. Any aliens who can rocket themselves to Earth are far more advanced than we are - indeed, the technology gap is surely greater than that separating us from Franklin.
The real problem with the idea of disclosure is not whether or not the government has had a good reason, and an uncanny ability, to keep an alien presence quiet all these years. It's the faulty premise.
If extraterrestrial craft are really strafing the stratosphere, and in numbers sufficient to cause roughly ten thousand citizen reports annually in the U.S. alone, then why must we throw up our hands and claim "only the government can prove it's true"? What about the hundreds of thousands of amateur astronomers who avidly observe the sky on clear nights, but don't seem to see any mysterious flying objects? What of the many thousand commercial satellites that make high resolution photos of our planet all day long without witnessing strange intruders? Are none of these data good enough?
One might argue that the military has better equipment. Of course it does, but if this phenomenon can only be proven with "better equipment," then that's not only a suspiciously convenient argument, it also degrades any claim that the countless saucer photos offered to the public for the past seven decades should be taken seriously.
Besides, does one really need military infrared cameras to find UFOs? Several of the Navy pilots who testified about encounters along the Atlantic seaboard in 2014 and 2015 said they observed these things "nearly every day." That sounds like an opportunity for any civilian with a good camera and a telephoto lens.
It's sad that the UFO crowd has come to this - seemingly giving up on proving their own case and hoping that the feds will do their work for them. Mainstream scientists don't wait for government agencies to prove their theories. That ball's in the researcher's court. And yet UFO proponents are now saying that, deus ex machina, the government will soon book some network air time and fess up about the aliens.
That's both an unconvincing argument and a mentally lazy one.

Fall of 1988. My neighbor and I were conversating through our chain link fence right before sunset. As we spoke, we both looked up st the sky and saw a metallic, translucent , circular disk traveling south at a very high speed. Whatever this thing was then made a sharp left turn heading east, another left turn heading north, and finally shot upward into the sky, ascending incredible fast and out of sight. No wings, no engine sounds, no windows. Just a metallic, translucent, disk moving in ways i still can't imagine. I'm a family man, 2 kids, religious, decently intelligent, and to this day there isn't a day that I don't picture that thing in my mind.

My mother says she saw a UFO in the north of Chile while traveling with a friend. She’s a university professor and never even contemplated on such things. She told us the story when young and repeats it at the age of 88. We never made much of it but now I take her seriously.
My Mother Grandfather and Uncle were in the car in the 70s, they said they saw a metallic disk somewhat close to the ground, it didn't make any noise and hovered there for about 6 minutes

I wonder why they are releasing anything at all. Those of us with a sober and serious interest in UFO phenomena have been ridiculed for years. So why suddenly give us credibility? This is odd whichever way you look at it.
It's important to note that this pilot and his squadron have never come out publicly and spoken about these incidents. We've just had the videos they filmed up to this point. A lot of things are going to start moving forward with this topic.
Edit: I was incorrect and the first reply to this comment has a link to an interview with him. Still, he hasn’t been on many mainstream sources, (compared to Fravor & the Nimitz Tic Tac case), so seeing him on 60 Minutes is great!

The public needs to see. These are real things in the sky we can't simply explain. But the remaining cases can't just be ignored. A lot of them are kind of getting buried and we need to take a look at them and take them more seriously.

Elizondo has talked about the physics which are warp bubbles around the craft that is anti-gravity. Has been asked about reverse engineering programs and has said because of his security clearance he could not talk about that. There’s a lot more here than most people understand.

I would say, most aliens flying UFOs are probably well-trained in aerospace operations. Otherwise, they don't give you the keys to the UFO.

There are always a multiple of explanations, and these UFO cases, when identified, always end up being one of the much more likely explanations.

In the summer of 2002 myself and a friend that lived near me were up late and just talking on his front porch. This area was in southern New Jersey. He niticed first then i. An object oblong with white light off in the distance was making sharp angled turns then dropped fast padt the tree line. It looked to be miles away and fast. We both observed it for a short period of time. A few days later in the local paper was an article about that night. I believe it was titled " mysterious objest fells near Malaga. To this day i have always been a believer.
I don’t think they are a security risk. I mean really. They have been here forever.

A lot of people have stories of sightings, I know. I too have one and have never really spent any time sharing it until now.
I am an educated guy (60 yrs old now) with a keen mind and question EVERYTHING! My mother raised me to do so. So what I saw is not some crazy school kid telling this….though this did happen in my senior year in high school.
My mother, my brother and I were standing on our front porch in Scottsdale Az. one evening around 8 or 9 pm and I looked up to the sky at just the right moment, and alerted them to do the same. What we saw: Two giant “box kite” shaped objects traveling relatively close to one another slowly at first…..then they separated for a few seconds, still moving slowly…..then totally stopped! Hovering. Not moving at all now. It was dark, and they were lit up, although NO blinking lights like what are required here in the states by FAA rulings. As we all stared at these two objects in amazement, we were struck with the fact that as close as they appeared, there was NO SOUND WHATSOEVER!! No engine sound, no whirring sound and no blinking lights of any kind. Frankly, it was more eerie to see them not moving than it was to watch them floating by. Then as fast as they appeared, they began to dance around…moving back and forth with one another (still NO sound) and as they darted around in the sky all of a sudden they shot out of sight at what seemed an impossible feat by anything we knew of at the time, aircraft wise. It was chilling to see and after watching the news the next few days, we saw nothing about this incident. Now to be fair, it was 1979 and no cell phones or people prepared with video cameras like today. But I’m telling you, nobody is gonna take this experience from us and I remember it like the night it happened still. Living in Az. we see streaks of rockets in the western sky from Vandenberg Air Force base a lot at night, but this was NOT that! I am intrigued to see / hear what the govt. has to say. I hope it’s not some bullshyt story to further dismiss all of the sightings. My brother passed from Covid this past November, but my mom is still alive and well. I’m sure we will chat about our experience again this week after the info is released. I hope they are honest with the public and tell us what’s really going on.
When I was 20 years old my friend and I were heading home from visiting with her sister. It was close to midnight and I was driving ...as we came to a steep hill about 15 miles from home a blinding white light came down the middle of the road straight at us..that was the last thing I remember until we both woke up in front of her house as the sun came up...we were parked facing east....had we come to her house like we should have we'd have been facing west..both of us remembered the light but not driving home ...we lost 5 hours of night and had no idea what happened or how we got there

I find it strange that the pilots who are tasked with protecting the skies shouts, “wow man look at that thing” when describing an aircraft who could easily out fly and maneuver its own jet I would assume he’d take things a bit more f*cking serious no?

*The phenomenon* (film) released in 2020 is a must-watch, totally legit documentary. I rented mine for 3.99 on the Microsoft Store, and I don't regret it.
There's a scene with a Stanford professor in his lab talking about a piece of material that doesn't occur in nature; thus, it had to be manufactured and is close to indestructible is currently a professor at Stanford University of microbiology.
I'm curious what a professor of microbiology is doing talking about materials science and how they can know an object is indestructible without rigorous testing in a lab?

The odd part about this, as they say, "meta-material" is that it seems to have been constructed at the atomic level which is something we can not do with current technology, at least without spending billions and billions of dollars. The piece itself comes from the collection of a french computer scientist named Jaque Vallee. He is probably the most legit UFO researcher of all time, since the interest really kicked off in the 40s.

At Stanford, in Gary Nolans lab, they have a machine that is able to enhance the signatures and compositions of materials to an atomic level, alongside Dr. Jacques Valle, he has been analysing anomalous meta material samples that are possibly engineered off-world, so far these materials have been shown to require a zero-g environment in order to be manufactured.
Gary Nolan has been a known figure within the UFO community for a number of years due to his involvement in analysing what was known as the 'Atacama Humanoid', he then went to work for To The Stars Academy of Arts & Science, he has since left and is pursuing his own projects and one of them is the analysis of these anomalous materials.

That implies he is really smart, but aside from that-I don’t know if you attend college, but professors are really smart. My chem professor graduated from Stanford and she is a genius compared to me, I know a bit about chemistry she knows/teaches chemistry, physics, organic and inorganic chemistry. This professor has access to a machine that scans the fragment, then he makes a decision and draws a conclusion. He talked about the isotopes in the fragment do not occur naturally in nature. My guess... they are US military experimental aircraft. They are intentionally interrupting our own conventional military training maneuvers to determine how an adversary might react to them in a confrontation or combat situation. They are also testing our radar, infrared, and other sensors' ability to track their movements as it would give them an idea of a potential adversaries ability to do the same.

@@MattMajcan Considering we don't have any definitive answers about what these things are, I'd say the secret is still safe. All the UFO and alien speculation also works to their advantage in diverting attention from the real designers. There's a good chance these came out of Skunk Works or an equivalent US military affiliated design firm.

I don't know what it is, but the bottom line is that we don't have control over our air space and the military echelon has not addressed it.
When I was in the Army, everything was a security risk, everything!. But, that is because as a military person you are trained to think and put down all possible security risks. Not much critical thinking in the military trust me. After serving 10 years worked for the DOD 25 more. Now how many times in the verified writen history of the world, has anyone without shadow of doubt been attacked, invaded, or destroyed by these "security risks"? Extraordinary claims (aliens exist and are flying aerial vehicles in our atmosphere) require extraordinary evidence! I know it's not easy to get that evidence since these things seem to fly at incredible speeds etc. but that is what is required for people to actually accept these claims. I must admit i have been becoming less skeptical about these claims since there have been so many of these incidents and the people who are seeing them are US air force pilots. That gives them much more credibility.

"Every day for at least a couple of years." You can't tame a wild cat in five minutes as it doesn't understand your language. You have to slowly and increasingly introduce it to the human form from a distance until it calms down, realises you mean it no harm, accepts your presence and is finally ready for close contact.

My aunt and uncle, in the 1950's, during their honeymoon, told my mother decades later, when the book about aliens and space saucers, that a bright light was following their car. They looked, and saw a space saucer, with the little men looking out the windows. Hours later, they were in the same spot in their car, moving with the engine running. He was a cop and she was a nurse. They assumed at the time they must have drank some bad liquor. They were blown away by the cover and contents of the book that came out in the early 70's. (I am sorry, I can't recall the title, but it was a best seller.) The book validated their experience. They only told my mother, and she told no one else but me, her daughter, and told me to take the story with me to my grave.
