As a PSU Alum I've always rooted for the big red dog. I was hoping the Steelers would draft him but they were too much invested with the Kenny Picket boondoggle. The Packers are a good spot for him, I wish him much success in GB.
Brian Gutekunst came out and said that he wanted to add another quarterback in the 2024 NFL draft, and the Green Bay Packers landed a steal in Michael Pratt falling to round 7. Michael Pratt will compete with Sean Clifford for the 2nd string backup job. We have quarterback competition and it’ll be very interesting to see who will be our 2nd string quarterback. Sean Clifford has the advantage of spending a year in Green Bay, but Michael Pratt has exciting upside and should make the roster. Go Pack Go 💚💚💛💛
@@driftlessman2094 Well Michael Pratt and Sean Clifford will be competing for the 2nd string quarterback spot so yeah I think we’ll keep all 3 of them active.
The Packers have kept 2 QBs active in recent years, and are expected to do the same this year. Whoever doesn't win the backup job will be on the PS and not active. If Pratt clearly outperforms Clifford in camp and preseason thus becoming the backup QB, then I expect the Packers to try and get something for Clifford and let him go to another team where he has an opportunity.
I think Clifford could be one of those guys like Brunnel or other backups that eventually get traded to possibly start for another team. He looked good last year when he played.
I'm excited to see Clifford and Pratt play in the preseason. Thought Clifford played pretty well last year, and I, no pun intended love his gunslinger play style. Doesn't have the arm of Brett Favre but has that same mindset and style. He uses his accuracy over his arm strength I've noticed. He fit it into a few tight windows last year for either TDs in the redzone or big gains. I said he was a steal and now we have another potential huge steal in Pratt. Guy was very productive and successful in college. Heck, he beat Caleb Williams haha 😄
Without a doubt Clifford is the incumbent backup. He’s like having an extra coach around. He has commanded the huddle in pro-like college offenses. He’s been part of a scheme in which, on any given play, there might be several targets in play and he’s made some good reads and good decisions. He has enough arm strength to make most, if not all, of the throws in the playbook and he doesn’t suffer from any accuracy issues With the Pack’s talent and coaching, he can definitely develop into a starting caliber QB.
I keep reading from some people that Michael Pratt has a weak arm, but Pratt averaged 8.9 yds per passing attempt in 2022 (Led the American Conference), and averaged 8.5 yds per pass in 2023. The weak armed QBs don't have that high of a number. Sean Clifford's best year was 8.3 yds average per passing attempt (2019), which isn't bad, either. Michael Pratt thrived on long passes in his last two years in college. And he was accurate w/ a passing completion PCT of 65.4, and had only 5 INTs, in 2023.
IMO, Sean Clifford's comp is Don Majkowski. Like Majkowski, Clifford doesn't have the strongest arm, but he is very good at improvising. That's one of the reasons why Majkowski was called "The Magic Man".
I'm a big #4 fan and he does remind you a lot of how Brett played, he is not afraid to take chances to find an open receiver for the big play down field, nothing wrong with that, That's what I want to see in a back up quarterback, plus the kid is not afraid to scramble when he needs too.
He looked just as good as Love last preseason imo. Even Love commented that Clifford picked up the offense quicker than he did. Clifford will get his chance someday somewhere and I believe he will shine. Nothing against Love but the Packers are blessed to have a great QB room
I like him too What many spectators don't realize is that Cliff meets the minimum threshold of being 6'2," so he can sit in the pocket and see his guy down the field. He also has some weight on him. You never want your QB to take a hit in the pocket but if he does, he has to have some weight to absorb a hit. Clifford weighs 218ish according to the Pack website. He also has a 4.5 40 time so he's mobile. He has qualities you'd look for in a starter.
How does Pratt have a weak arm? Pratt thrived on long passes, especially his last two seasons in college. He was first in 2022 in Avg Yds per passing attempt w/ 8.9 yds in his conference. He averaged 8.5 yds per attempt in 2023. Clifford's arm isn't as strong as Pratt's arm. Clifford's best year was 8.3 yds per passing attempt (2019). Pratt was also more accurate in college in his last 2 years.
