  • in this video i spent 3 1/2 hours roughly in rain to see how waterproof the British army combat smock is after it has been waxed twice. the walk was in the black mountains brecon beacons and the jacket took quite a pounding not only from the rain but from the wind as well.

    Same when I wore mine on longmoor ranges. I hadn’t been given a waterproof buffalo jacket like everyone else and just had the smock. It was cats and dogs. At the end of the day my shoulders were only mildly damp and that was with no waxing or waterproofing and the smock was warm and comfy. It also kept me warm in the back of an A400 at 30,000 ft when I had no thermal layer, just t-shirt jacket and the smock. When bits of kit look after you like that, you get attached to them. I’ll definitely keep mine when I go outside.

    Love your videos man. I often hike for 8-10 hours per day, so I bring a fully waterproof Polyuretan minimalistic jacket with no pockets, a hood and zips under the arms for airing out damp. The weight of that is about 600 grams. Then I have a light wind jacket that transports moisture well. It works so-so in close to zero celsius, but one idea I had was to bring an extra fleece in the pack just to get a few more comfortable hours in the rain. On ski trips in the snow I use 100% cotton anorak.

      Sounds like you have more fun than me ☺️. There's one thing I always do when out on the hills or anywhere in any season. Apart from what I think I should wear, it's one extra layer just in case. In terrible condition, it feels safe to know that I'm one step ahead in this world. Most of the time, I don't use it, but it's always there, and an assurance that keeps me away from trouble. You just can't trust the weather. The MTP smock in this video is now waterproofed with fabsil, which is a good waterproof agent, and it's less laborious to apply. thanks for the compliment 👍

    I want to get the British MTP smock to add to my collection as well. It looks fantastic, especially in the Fall and Spring. I love the British woodland DPM one I have. It's a really good jacket John, it's worth getting this modern type, it has a thick and quality feel to it and they are very affordable to. This one has a nice big Arctic type peek around the hood. The sizes are in centimetres (CM) mine is 180/104 the first part, 180 is your height / and the 104 is your chest. 👍

      @friendofcoal they are a common as muck. Just Google, British army combat jacket mtp. There are plenty to choose from. Just make sure it's genuine, the condition you want, and the sizes are in cm. I'm 180-104. That means "you're hight"-- "you're chest." generally a large. I've discovered a better waterproofing agent, it's called fabsil, you may want to look that up. I have a video on that as well. Hope this helps 👍

    Good to see you in Grwynne Fawr Andy. The last time we were in there we actually said it could do with a new stove. And they put one in. Now, I think the test proved one thing. I think the key to this sort of jacket without doubt is have a woolly Tshirt and a woolly jumper under neath minimum, you could add a short gortex mac as a bonus. @@tomhickman1006 hi Tom, yes I do recommend it but I need to tell you that it will only be waterproof for about 1 hour in hard rain then the beeding of the water starts to sink in. It's more shower proof to be honest. If your entering the back country or on the mountains then I recommend you don't rely on it being waterproof. Wear something woolly underneath and or a light waterproof jacket underneath or a poncho over it. Don't put your life in this jackets hands,

      The wax I used is "fjallraven Greenland wax" but you could use any wax I think. I made a video on how to wax a jacket called "How to wax a bushcraft jacket" and the method in that video is the same method with all my videos like the one you seen. There are other methods of waxing a jacket but I have never tried them so I don't know weather they are better or not. Hope this helps you out Sean 🤘

      The wax is by, fjallraven. Called Greenland wax. Rub it on dry and hard, then melt it in with a hair dryer. It's OK
      These days, my jackets are waterproofed with fabsil. You spray it on with a spray bottle, but it smells, and you have to leave it to air in a garage or shed for about 3 or 4 days. But the smell will go in the end. Hope this helps, and thanks for the compliment 😊

    Sorry Andy if you have answered this question before but did you use the Fjallraven Greenland wax on this jacket one layer or two, It appears to have done a very good job.Watched your jacket waxing video quite a laborious task but the results are quite impressive on this particular jacket you gave it quite a severe test for sure.

    • @Andy-walkaboutnutty

      No worries. I'm pretty sure I just put the 1 layer on because it's a very tight-knit material and very windproof. These days, my jackets are waterproofed with #fabsil . They both do a good job, but fabsil is easier to spray on.

    What would you say to adding a thermal liner to the inside of one of these smocks? I’ve got one of these in a size too tall which makes it more of a parka really. I’ve dyed it forest green, but I’ve been thinking I might try waxing it too or maybe some further modifications like a woolly or furry liner.

    • @Andy-walkaboutnutty
      @Andy-walkaboutnutty  2 года назад +1

      I would go for the woolly liner because even if it's waxed it will make it waterproof for a while but if in it for a long time the rain will get in, in the end, it's not the same as a proper waterproof jacket and wool would save the day. What I would do is have the wool liner capable of being removed or just wear a wool jumper underneath like I did and take that worthless mesh over the shoulders out and replace it with another sown in layer, maybe of a waterproof material. Actually when writing this It gave me the idea of looking into this because it's a really great jacket but the mesh does nothing, cheers for that Daniel 👍

The average soldier like myself wouldn't need to do that but believe me if we had to we would, it's just another dirty job to do, basic training puts you through hard disciplines for the soul purpose of making sure you can carry out and do the most uncomfortable things. The ones that fail have boundaries and limitations to what they would do. Squaddies are not always nice people.
