You are a Master Teacher / Splainer! The ES2 interface looks very intimidating. Like nothing I've ever seen in my life. I believed I could never understand it. But you take us through it in small steps and cover everything so clearly. Thank you for providing the knowledge and confidence to be a true user of ES2 (and synths in general).
I have just start logic pro x.i saw your videos about ES2.Really its greatest video.you explain so briefly its best for those people who work in logic pro
This is fantastic! I've always had love for the ES2 but never really understood it. Now, I'm in love with it. This video alone has opened up a world of possibilities for me. Thank you so much!
Absolutely wonderful tutorial! Thorough and easy to digest. Thanks for including the basic components of sound synthesis! I will be watching the rest. ES2 is a fantastic synth!
Awesome tutorial. I love that you go deep into the theory of it all too. I never quite understood how ring mods worked or what pulse waves were. I love that you explain everything in such detail. Thanks for a great tutorial series. Can't wait to see parts 2-4!
Wow!! I've always wanted to learn the basics about oscillators and synthesis, and have never been able to find a good "101-type" instruction on the internet. You break it down really well and in detail! Thanks!
very helpful and informative. thanks for taking the time to sit down and explain how this works. looking forward to listening to your other tutorials as well.
This is brilliant, thanks man. I studied Music Tech at College but forgot quite a lot of what I learnt, this was perfect to refresh my knowledge and I also learnt some new things.
Great tutorial - thanks alot! When I first opened up the ES2 it was overwhelming but now I feel more comfortable with the top half settings! Look fwd to working through the rest of it.
easily one of THE BEST Series of Logic Tutorials online! This feels like when I read my first ever word...its an amazing feeling...so many answers to so many questions I had about this fearsome plug in, are being answered right here...and I'm only on part ONE!! Thankyou Josh
Hey you are just an awesome soul.... The best ever logic related tutorial I'd ever watch in youtube. Thanks a ton!!!!!! Explanations were just awesome and to the point.... Keep rocking!!
MAN I LOVE YOU ! It's the best tutorial on synthesis ! And on the ES2 on RUclips ! Finley someone that undersertand it all and don't have halls in his explanation :) ! Thanks !
dont know if you guys cares but if you're bored like me during the covid times you can watch all the new movies and series on InstaFlixxer. Been watching with my girlfriend for the last couple of months :)
Dude! This was an amazing video. Es2 plus your vid = perfect introductory for me into the world of synths. Thank you so much. Very useful and well explained as a musician!
It's amazing how much you can learn for free online because of creators like this guy! I can't imagine how anyone could justify paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to go to music school these days.
wasn't planning on watching the whole thing but glad I did! I'm gonna echo what everyone's been saying, you're a great teacher and this really helped. excited to get through part 2!
Very Impressed w/ knowledge of the different Oscillator tonal reaction types in relation to 5ths, 6ths and 7ths... you must of been a music theory teacher at one time ;-)
thanks you so much man, really appreciate you took the time to make this. I'm just getting into synths and sounddesign stuff, so this is really helping me a lot :)
Hey +MusicTechHelpGuy, I make Chiptunes, and I can say that the NES's channels had (without any add-on chipsets like the VRC6) two pulse wave channels, one triangle wave channel, one noise wave channel and one DPCM (or sample-based) channel. The Game boy had two pulse wave channels, one DPCM channel and one noise channel. Now you know (and that's half the battle right there!)!
Great Video! Question - why do some wave forms sound significantly louder than others even if both are outputting at the same level? (compare sawtooth and sine waves for instance). I would guess it's related to the difference in the number overtones, but shouldn't this be taken into account by the meter?
Also, 2 sine tones played simultaneously output at about 2x the level of 2 square, triangle, or sawtooth waves (obviously with volume meter set the same). This doesn't make any sense
Do you need a midi keyboard to play a sound in the ES2? Because i can't seem to play any sound at all. I sure can edit on the oscillators and the settings but i can play any of the sounds you play.... What to do? Btw great tutorial.
Jonathan Jensen If your using logic 9, Just hit the "caps lock" key and it will open up a small midi piano that you can play on your actual keyboard. Preferences>General>Caps Lock Keys>Enable Caps Lock Keys. In X, its a little different, you have to go to "Window>Show Musical Typing. (Caps is not enabled in X) Or you can just right click / ctrl click in the arrangement view and select create empty midi region and just use the pencil tool and write in a basic one note / chord phrase... like C to G to F back to C etc, etc. I hope this helps.
Jonathan Jensen Yes, press Caps Lock in Logic 9 or press Command+K in Logic X to pull up the musical typing keyboard. I would recommend getting a MIDI keyboard, otherwise you're going to have to use the musical typing or type in notes one by one in the piano roll. Both of which are very time consuming.
Specific question.... How do you route modulation (vibrato) to the mod wheel control on any sound? I've tried taking a stock sound with the modulation like I like it and copying the parameters to the patch that I want modulation on, but still, I get something different. I'm at a loss. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!
I have a question: I am wanting to use the "Spirit" pre-set under gated synth on logic 9. I want to use the sound when the bpm is 130 but when I lower it to 70 bpm the sound changes. How can I keep the sound when I hear it 130 bpm? Appreciated.
These tutorials are actually at a commercial level, I would be more than happy to pay money for these
