Just one thought here. Meshida-San, whenever you say "unlike Westerners" or something similar I giggle - Japan, SK, Taiwan are so westernized nations these days, you would definitely feel at home walking streets of Berlin, Warsaw, Prague, more than walking streets in China or other SEA nations :)
Believe it or not, you are part of Western world, as this is not about geolocation :)
Actually, would be great to see you talking about it - elements of western culture that Japan integrated into their own (with obvious Japanese twist to it).

I'm from Belgium but i'm from the northern part so first language is dutch. My mom put me in front of the tv when I was 3 to watch french tv shows for kids in order to learn french. Around that time (in the early eighties) France imported Japanese anime not knowing what is was. I remember whatching hokuto no ken and at first no one gave a shit about the violence. It became a thing when french politician Ségolène Royal started saying kids we're becoming violent because of these types of shows and that they should be banned from tv. But at the same time we saw RoboCop, terminator, Predator and all those other action movies that nowadays can't be made without all sorts of restrictions from the studios. Look how 'Berserk' influenced creative people in the West. Hokuto no ken became a classic even. Manga, anime, games and movies don't make people violent but when society pushes people towards the edge and they can't pay rent or food anymore (including Manga artists) that's when people 'can' get violent.

You can have videos like this talking about Japan social issues like Nobita (also a yotuber) and injecting humor into the topics. This would work as well and it also allows advertising. It's rare to see Japanese people being honest to their feelings and express it, so this is a refreshing perspective.

Next time I will want someone to speak openly, I'll offer them a pack of American Spirit. Other than that, this pretty much confirms the whole state of the Manga&Anime industry. It's so strange how the current standards all hinged on one genius's work ethic to be replicated in future generations without considering it was a one time case.

Yeah it’s one thing for someone like Tezuka to inspire future generations but he unintentionally created an impossible standard that proved burdensome for all who followed. It kinda explains why the highly successful mangaka who helm really long running series start to experience some form of burn out when they’ve been doing the weekly grind for over a decade or more. The fact Eiichiro Oda has kept it going continuously for 25 going on 30 years is nothing short of incredible and should be seen as exceptional rather than the standard.

Manga and anime turned me into a nerd and a weeb. I've been one since 1980, thanks mainly to Uchuu Senkan Yamato, Choudenji Machine Voltes V, and Gatchaman. Half my love for your country comes from childhood cartoons. In 2000, I worked for a 4 color comic book in my country (I was in my late 20s). There were 4 main artists working on a story each, and I was the guy that filled in the colors, helped brainstorm some stories, wrote & edited some articles, and occasionally answered the letters section. It was its own hell and its own heaven. All of us were new, even the publisher. Half the time, we were barely figuring things out. We were all college friends trying to make our childhood dreams come true. There was friction, there were misunderstandings, but we did love the work. Eventually, I got really sick and had to stop. Later, at a convention, I felt that I wasn't really welcome anymore, and that solidified my decision to not return. I'm actually getting flashbacks from listening to Junjun's story. I don't have many regrets: my salary put me through two years of college (mainly because my classes were few, and partly funded by the public). I hope that future mangaka and animators have better conditions than we had. :)

I was reading "Youth Shonen Magazine 1978-1983" about a mangaka working for Weekly Shōnen Magazine in the 80s and he talks about many mangaka who got sick, couldn't walk, had liver failure, and killed themselves because of the stress of drawing a weekly manga (sometimes two or three series at the same time). Reading the manga, I thought "I don't want to read weekly manga that much, please do monthly manga for your health please."

i live in germany and i remember that many of our older cartoons were actually produced in Japan.
-like "Die Biene Maja" (roughly translated: "The Bee named Maja"), based on a german novel about insects acting like people.
-or "Heidi", about a little girl, living with her Grandfather on the Alps.
-or an anime about the italian fairy-tale "Pinocchio", but expanded into several stories.
all of these clearly had a japanese art- and animation-style but were created for european audiences.

The patriarchy system in Japan which formed the value of 忠(loyalty) that binds the relationships between senior (sempai) and junior; and the value of 孝 (filial piety) that binds the relationship between parents and children, are said to be influenced by Confucianism. I can understand the frustrations of all the juniors and the children when their seniors and parents abused their status and oppressed the underlings with these 'sacred' values. However the seniors often overlooked the other segment of confucianism called the '五伦' which states that parents and seniors must also play their roles appropriately with due consideration given to the other Confucius values of compassion, justice/fairness, humility/courtesy and honesty/honour.
From my own experience, parents, teachers and sempai should allow the juniors some freedom to explore and make mistakes. My own Buddhist master also let me do what i want after certain years because i need to experience things first hand to know what they are. Many seniors, masters or parents are too protective or possessive and try to educate the juniors instead of allowing them to experience things on their own. This is where the conflicts arise because the juniors can't always see things the same way as the seniors because of their different life experiences and dna. So a good way is simply let the juniors experience things on their own and from their interactions and introspection, they get to understand the true nature of their biases and karmic obstacles (dna) are all about. That way, the seniors and juniors can joinly devise a new path that is reasonable/ethical and workable to enable the juniors to overcome their obstacles and be successful in their endeavors.
These traditional Confucius and Buddhist values made the juniors and the children look up to the seniors and parents for inspiration and moral acknowledgement because they represent the guardians of these values. However if the seniors are wrong and biased in representing the spirits of these values, then the juniors may want to write their own rules which they deem as accurate and just.

Meshida. The point you bring up at the end about the young not going to elections makes me remember the author Yukio Mishima who believed Japan was getting too weak and feared for it's future enough to protest in the way that he did that ultimately led to his suicide. What do your Japanese contemporaries think of Mishima? Do you have an opinion on what he did or stood for? I imagine he was lied about in the media (to discourage similar acts?). I know little about him but he seemed to fear Japan eventually becoming extinct/taken over due to it becoming too weak militarily. I understand and share his fear and feel his desire for a stronger more independent Japan was a good desire....I wish he didn't commit suicide but I believe it was a protest similar to when a buddhist monk lit himself on fire as a form of protest. Also he didn't want to live in prison (its harsh in Japan) and he didn't want to live to see Japan staying the same with problems rising....I'm curious if he is brought up in japanese schools at all...is he celebrated of seen as a villain?

(14:45) I agree. American comics are too focused on sending a message and are not categorized like manga.

Seeing Japanese people, maybe just men generally?, talk and chat freely, -- I can't tell you how relaxing it is for me. And I really like the Japanese super-power, to distinguish fact from fiction. I was in a Sushi place a while back, and this Japanese guy with this really big heart was just talking very openly, very plainly, and while I could only understand about 50% of what he was saying, his voice was just incredibly sweet, and everything he said was so full of feeling. I hope that Japan doesn't fold to American scolds. And thank you for explaining about the demonetization -- I just got in on your Patreon to help chip in.

"Manga and anime fascinate many foreign young people and change them into nerds and make their parents sad"
Can confirm this. I saw 3 episodes of Gatchaman (as G-Force) when I was a young kid in the 80's; I ain't been right since. I also make my parents sad, but that's really for my own amusement. 🤫

I wonder if webtoon/manhwa artists have better situations, since those are serialized online, and likely get different profit percentages.. though they're harder to create, as they're generally in color as well.

Even though that it is just a fiction for you, doesn't meant that everyone will thinking like that too. Even it is just a fiction, there's line that you should not cross over it. In a long term run, there will be more destruction due to these kind of things. Even it is fiction, it has limit that we should keep.

This is by far the REALEST VIDEO I HAVE EVER SEEN!!!!
Not only was it funny, but also informative!!!
You said it all, it's all because the "jiji" still in power that refuse to change things....
Makes me think of HOW AHEAD OF ITS TIME the manga "SANCTUARY" was, 30 years ago and already sending a message!!!
The solution to many of Japan's problems start with getting rid of the old people in power and being more flexible and the first thing that should change is allow dual citizenship, that would help solve the economy AND population problems.
