I find its a lot easier to use a blending stump instead of your finger. It blends much smoother. Also, if you put a scrap piece of paper to rest you hand on over the drawing, you don't get smear marks on the drawing. You can also use different sized blending stumps, and use residual charcoal as a drawing tool.
What the stomps do basically is they move the graphite/charcoal around and also push it into the fiber of the paper. That way, if you want to erase something, especially when using charcoal where you use a kneaded eraser a lot, for highlights and such, you can't get as much charcoal to be removed as you could if you simply used your finger. Stomps are just a pain, to be honest.
I've been taking a drawing class and I have been kind of bummed that I don't have the patience for the intracacy of drawing. I love maniuplating drawings using thr principles of light and shade so maybr I should give charcoal a shot.
Hey I just wanted to say thanks for putting this up. Trying to learn new things at 27 that I told myself for years I couldn't do. Drawing has always been one of them.
I noticed you said you put down a paper, and although that works quite well, I've found that using an old smooth glove that doesn't contact the paper too much works well (so not like a snow glove, like wool or whatever) if you cut out the thumb, fore and middle fingers on the glove. That way your pinkie and Ring, the two most common to touch the paper, as well as the side of your hand, is usually smudgefree. Drawings that I'm sure would have smeared everywhere are basically pure and it makes you look more professional too haha.
The thing about the eye though is that it isnt a "round ball". If you look at it from the side you know what I mean. It protrudes at the iris, which is why the eyelid is curved. The eyelid curves around the protrusion of the eye. Hope that makes sense
Vine charcoal is for establishing base tones for your piece. it's much easier to work on a grey/black background than a stark white page. Also, it's blowing away when your paper is too smooth. Graphite works best with a medium textured paper that has a nice bite to it.
Completely new to drawing.. Got some charcoal pencils, they scared me 😂😂😂 after watching this and the way in which you narrate and illustrate your work I'm game to give this a go now.... Progression from stick men underway 😂😂😂🙈🙈
Thank you very much for posting this Awesome and educational video. Zeeshan Hassan you use crayons the only people that use crayons are kindergarteners and adults that don't care. Dude use color pencils you can do a pretty decent picture with them
Crayons are relatively good quality Its just that there cheap so schools buy them they've been downgraded to shitty sticks of wax with colorful paper on them
Claire The Artist For Life Actually...Crayons can be a pretty good medium for drawing. My friend made a realistic portrait drawing using crayons and it was one of her best works, probably her best work.

i think the eyelash thing is true. It might be because guys have testosterone which increases hair production but that's just my guess. I have somewhat long eyelashes but they're nothing compared to my 3 brothers.
Do NOT blow charcoal dust off your paper! Any moisture that might accompany your breath that lands on that paper will create a black spot in your drawing. Instead, tap the paper from behind and the dust will fall off.
I followed along with it cause like my dad just got me a set of charcoal pencils and tbh it looks rlly good for being my first thing drawn with this medium
Using Derwent light too. It's real that everytime I sharpen it , it will break. So I find a normal sharp sharpener and it never break at all anymore. Thanks for tge detail tutorial
Charcoal is not really the best medium for photorealism if that is what you're after. You can check Zhaoming Wu's and Henry Yan's drawings to see the look one can achieve with charcoal.
advise if you dont want your drawing to smear because the side of your palm put a paper under your hand and when you move you hand move the paper with it
This person is way better than the first person I didn't finish that video I barely watched it because he sounded depressed and sad and he was very boring
+Rhonda Hoeft: Best of luck to you! I started drawing in high school with mechanical pencils and lined paper, now I work with Prismacolor and Derwent graphite and charcoal as well as different drawing papers, sketch papers and newsprint. Starting out, I wouldn't worry about the "proper" way to draw, just take what you have and start having fun with it. It's a lot of fun, but it's full of failures. For every hyper-realistic, gallery-quality piece I make; I fill up at least half a dozen pages of (I.M.O.) garbage doodles. Embrace the "failures" and learn from them, force yourself to really examine them and try to ignore what you hate about them and force yourself to find what you like about it. My only other piece of advice to you would be is to draw something every day. As a Millennial I find it's easiest to get in touch with my inner child and even though I haven't been interested in it in over 10 years, I draw a Pokemon everyday. It's actually more fun than I thought it would be, and that's the key; make it fun! P.S. We would love to follow your progress, post a little 30 second (or whatever) video of your finished drawings/doodles (or a time-lapse of you drawing). You can talk about your drawing or just show it off. :-)
Guys, pls tell me the differences of soft, medium, and hard types of charcoal pencils... I dunno the difference and how to use it yet because I just got it..😶
I've been drawing a portrait using graphite for the person and charcoal for the hair so I was wondering if you know of any type of pencil that doesn't have graphite's shine and isn't as loose as charcoal? It's because I'm trying to draw something realistic and the graphite might be getting in the way.
In our school (Immaculate Conception Knowledge School) {At Philippines} We need to bring this charcoal pencil |ExPeNsIvE| I'm watching this basic drawing😂
Actually Vine charcoal does not "blow off the a paper". It depends what brand you buy it off of. The charcoal I have does stick to the paper. You may also be using the incorrect type of paper.
Yes, guys have longer eyelashes. Not to make this sound sexist, but it is because guys do alot of outside work. And the eye lashes help keep the dirt and sand out of their eyes.
I'll just answer it just because! I've heard that because of heavy makeup use, women's eyelashes are short and/or sparse due to damage; but that's probably just half of it.
EasyThingsToDraw101 I just got a twelve pack of Willow Charcoal from Daler Rowney and a Royal and Langnickel sketchbook to use the charcoal on. It says on the book to use dry media and I figure charcoal is dry media so it should work right?
what tool do u use to sharpen your pencil?we can obviously not use a sharpner...what would you suggest?well how if i sharpen it with a blade..would that be okay?
I can't shade as you do. I'm using Derwent as well (tho "Medium" and "Dark", not "Light") on Canson paper and I find charcoal to be a bit scratchy and inconsistent. It's like it "tapers off", like a nib that's ran out off ink. I can shade a whole area eventually but it's a frustrating experience. Any suggestions?
I'm using Cretacolor Studio Line Charcoal pencils and I have 4 different types of pencils such as charcoal oil extra soft, charcoal soft, charcoal medium and charcoal hard. Which one should I use? or rather which one is best to use for drawing such as these?..

Mandy Sowell you can use paint brushes for blending to
Mandy Sowell too*
You can use charcoal pencils for blending
The thing I don't like about kneaded erasers is that they have no firmness, if I mold a fine point it just wobbles
Coffeemancer you just dab the gummi eraser, if it wont work, it works for me
Cheap kneaded erasers are usually has a bit of stiffness
Coffeemancer buy some kind of $50 or $30 package of art supplies.
It’s a lot better then a regular eraser because your able to change the tip!
I used pencils and it was hard to work with. Charcoal just flies and it's so fast and easy to work with. The drawwings come out very natural.
HALA AHMED nice
I've been taking a drawing class and I have been kind of bummed that I don't have the patience for the intracacy of drawing. I love maniuplating drawings using thr principles of light and shade so maybr I should give charcoal a shot.

I know! I loved this video. It was my first time using charcoal and it looks so amazing!

I tried this and it was awesome! I first started drawing carelessly as if it was very hard and I wouldn't make it well, but it turned out to be great!
When I looked up easy things to draw, I expected a stick figure. not something I've seen in a gallery 😂
start with outlines of everyday objects like a pencil or simple bubble letters, Doing it with a pencil and shading. It takes a lot of practice!
You are right girl friend 👍👍👍
This probably sounds weird, but you have beautiful hands.

Haven’t drawn in years...... life been a little crazy so I brought a sketch book and charcoal pencils this is therapeutic for me always been

No problem buddy
Im 43 and just starting out and love drawing with charcoal, good job mate.

I got into charcoal recently and it is just awesome. I love charcoal.
Very nice video. You mentioned a lot of the pointers I learned and pass on to my students.

luckily, i just started the drawing
I love vine charcoal. it's my favorite type to work with.
Use a q tip to shade people thumbs up to me if my idea works

Am i the only one that loves this kind of video?? this was gorgeos.
i think the eyelash thing is true. It might be because guys have testosterone which increases hair production but that's just my guess. I have somewhat long eyelashes but they're nothing compared to my 3 brothers.
Females have testosterone too...
Plus, men were historically "hunter/ gatherers" so their eyes would need more protection while out in the elements?

Charcoal comes so easy to you maybe it's the surface I work on what it the best material to draw on with charcoal.
hmm , i guess i won't like charcoal it's so messy compared to graphite, i would get annoyed fast.
Charcoal is not really the best medium for photorealism if that is what you're after. You can check Zhaoming Wu's and Henry Yan's drawings to see the look one can achieve with charcoal.
H3lianthus if you dont know how to use charcoal perfectly so you tot messed up
it is also a nightmare for left handers to use

It's better to use a cotton bud or tissue for blending. Fingers always hold residual oils which smear and wash out good blending
that's so good!! TEACH ME YOUR WAYS!!!
I tried it out.. it came out quite well...
The eye looks delicious
Raymond Tong ...what? 🤣
