    I absolutely loved the sound of the bass when you was playing the chords...theres something about doing chords on fretlesses that are absolutely magical and it sounds very well mixed.
    You've must a spent quite a while with that bass since you did your other Obscura cover because now your intonation is right where it needed to be and now you sound flawless.
    Great Job!!!

    This has to be the most beautiful bassline in metal ever! Using a fretless in this genre is just...VERY brave! And to use it in such a melodic way as well...this song is always mind bending, especially those octave slides!

    You get a completely different, warmer, smoother sound, and a very slight buzz (like fret buzz, but on wood so it can sound very pleasing)... and the ability to do much more gradual and expressive slides up and the fingerboard. it's definitely something worth trying out at least once!

    There are so many reasons this is amazing. It's technical death metal on bass, it's a fretless bass, you learned by ear, which learning anything by ear in metal seems impossible to me, but you do it on bass so it seems even harder, so it's much harder to hear, not to mention it's a FRETLESS BASS... Idk if I'm making sense, but it's amazing; just know that.

    What Margolo said. Though, I can't use my pinkie, but I can use my ring finger fairly well. It's all about practice and building up the strength. It took me around 3 months to build up strength to a decent level and it's flatlined as of now because it's at an optimal level. The main issue once your fingers are strong enough is getting them in time.

    @aceenigmax It's the classical pose, not only is finger plucking somewhat more accurate for some people BUT it also helps play more technical stuff, I do not play bass though but this was the case for me with both acoustic and electric guitars. Again, for me playing like this works well for technique so it's purely personal, and yes it gets bothersome to play like this sometimes.

    @skull9111 With lots of patience and first knowing the rule of a thumb for fretless being that the notes peak at where the fretline (aka the actual fret) would lie. Fretless does NOT work the same as fretted. You have to be careful where you place your fingers as the notes shift with the slightest shift of the finger positioning. Just keep your eyes peeled at the fret side dot markers and picture the in between lines as they would lie on a fretted. Or just get a lined fretless for ease of use.

    Constructive criticism. Your timing was pretty off on a lot of parts, as well as your pitch. You hit a LOT of notes that were so flat they made me cringe a bit. Practice those parallel octaves more, because every single time you did them you had maaajor pitch discrepancies.

    @caramon770 No, I really doubt it's an Ibanez. First off, the only fretless Ibanez 6 string is the Ashula, which is actually a hybrid (Low B string to the D string are fretted, and the G and C strings are fretless) that looks nothing like this bass. Also, a LOT of brands have that headstock shape. The only bass headstock more common than that shape is the classic Fender P bass headstock. And the most common Ibanez headstock shape is the super small SR shape.
    Thanks for the help though :D

  • @Defenderofeyre
    @Defenderofeyre 13 лет назад

    @FokasSk8er you just press the strings directly down on the fretboard, intonation is difficult, but sound production is easy enough because incredibly low access is easy to have while the good tone remains (funnily fretless basses dont get loads of fret buzz :b)

    It all works differently for different people though so use what ever is most comfortable and thus safest for each individual, I find you have 2 fingers worth of recovery time as it were for each finger to be ready to strike again, with 3-2-1-2 you remove that and each finger has only one fingers worth of time to recover so you can achieve a lower strike rate over all In my experience

  • @overoath123

    @leifericson923 A little bit, if you play with roundwounds and dig into the neck a lot with bending, but it's nothing a little sanding won't take out. Rosewood scars up more than Ebony or maybe even Ebonol will. Ebony will barely scar due to srtings

  • @AttitudeCastle

    John Myung uses both,
    And simple mathematics validates the numbers and look at an anatomical diagram of ones hand. the tendons close from pinky to first finger (Mark Michelle - bass player talks about this in his 3 finger demo)
    3-2-1-2 3-2-1-2 3-2-1-2 3-2-1-2 means the 2nd finger is doing twice as much as the other two fingers.
    Also Sheehan rarely uses 4 fingers, (met him numerous times and I'm a fanboy haha!)

  • @Jshnizzoor
    @Jshnizzoor 12 лет назад

    When I started, I just started senselessly plucking. Clearly, not the way to go. What you're going to want to do is put on a metronome and play to it with your ring finger being 1, your middle being 2, your index being 3, and when you return to the ring finger, that will be 4 and it continues. Sit with a metronome and practice this. After a while, they'll become stronger and you'll be able to play in time with them. You can also practice triplets until you're ready to move to 16th notes.

  • @Charliedethklok7
    @Charliedethklok7 12 лет назад

    @explo32wunderwaffe He uses 2 AND 3, he uses 3 when needed, like for 16th notes

  • @Iliketacos091
    @Iliketacos091 12 лет назад

    Kudos on figuring this out by ear, but going that fast, there's no way anyone is going to get the intonation 100% perfect, and I noticed a few notes were definitely off. That being said, you did way better than I (and a good portion of bassists on youtube for that matter) could hope to do any time soon.
    Also, what brand is that bass? I have a fretted that looks a lot like it. Same shape (body, headstock, etc), bubinga top, brass nut, and huge heel.

    If you train yourself to have a disciplined rigth hand it's fine either way however 3-2-1-3 has even wear on all fingers and also if you train to have your ringer finger moving before/as the first finger strikes through the string you get an entirely consistant strike rate
    4 beats split into semi-quavers again:
    3-2-1-3 2-1-3-2 1-3-2-1 3-2-1-3
    the ring finger strikes once more than the other two fingers.
    I find as well with 3-2-1-2 the middle finger has to pull back then rake again so is slower
