This is an excellent reference to the levers and switch to starting. I use mine two maybe three times a year. I come back to this each time and it starts right up.
I have the 24 inch blade and it's a great machine & reliable, is very loud and vibrates a lot though so wouldn't recommend using it for too long a period! Excellent value for money!
I broke mine in with MotoMix plus one cap full of Stihl Ultra. I also sprayed my blades down with their lubricant/ resin remover before I used them. Buying a quart of MotoMix with my hs45 gave me a full four year warranty. I will run the hedge trimmers with an extra capful of Ultra for the first two tanks. Then, it will get fed my standard 50:1 mix of Stihl Ultra and premium non ethanol gas. I generally run my two cycle equipment at full throttle most of the time. Or, at least as much asI can. I do check spark arrestors in all equipment at least once a year, burning them off if necessary. The worst offender on spark arrestors I have is my MS 241 CM chainsaw.
Great video! Yea most people don't have a clue about a 'sparkarrester'! I pulled mine out the other day and it looked like it was a lost cause? But I put the torch on it and it looks brand new now! Lol
G'day mate, I loved this video & you saved me a heap of $$$'s my Stihl dealer in Western Australia quoted me $115 for a service plus parts for my HS45 with an additional cost to service my fuel system. The worst part was a 4 week waiting period for a booking for the dealership workshop. I actually considered buying a new HS45 for $349 for the 18" cut. Your tip about the spark arrester being blocked was my problem, I got it out & cleaned it with a wire brush, it's off & running like a new 1, thanks for your advice
Awesome. I actually figured it out today. Which wasn’t that obvious.. it’s part of the exhaust bolt 15mm… If you can include how to replace the fuel filter, that be great
Great video, thank you so much! I just bought one this week. Do you know if the grease is the same one the brushers use? And would you make a video about the sharpening? Thank you!!!
Would your recommend the gas HS45 or battery powered HSA 56. Both are about the same price where I am. I only use it occasionally...once a month. Thanks.
@@Carlsmower Thanks for the reply. Just a little concerned about the power on the HSA56. It has only 2800 strokes/minute. I have had the battery powered Stihl HSA45 for the past 5 years. Great machine.....super reliable....but has no power. Even hand shears cut faster and cleaner. Specs say the hsa45 has 2500 rpms. So, I don't expect much of an improvement with the 56a. Battery wise it's going from an 18 v to a 36 v but other manufactures like Echo using larger 56v batteries. That's why I was considering the gas powered HS45.
Just used mine today. The blades got stuck and I pulled on the throttle trigger to no avail it would not move, then I noticed the blade was caught on a bit of wire fence. I pulled it out and back to normal except it immediately now starts making a rattle noise when revved what has caused this please?
They no longer put that item on it is a brake or a blade disengage. Very wise to flip it out when you were starting machine that way the blades are not reciprocating makes it much safer also useful if you’re climbing a ladder with it
@@Carlsmower Outstanding! Thanks very much. I paid $160 for it, runs find, just a broken black handle- $45 from my Stihl dealer. Still less than $400 for a new one, esp since I won't use it often. Replaced a Ryobi POS with a plastic gearbox that crapped out.
@@Carlsmower I actually got them to move the bushings in the blades that through the bolts were gummed up pretty bad & I used that still cleaner every time I cut
In Western Australia we get screwed by the mower shop’s it will cost you around $20;00 Australian for one spark arrester we get robed the with the air filters. So I have to re-use everything. Until it’s unserviceable. it’s a disappointment . Getting a service from a mower shop on my sthil HD 45 costs close to half the price of a new machine . I only had one service this year because I was desperate. And bought another machine. The stupid thing about it is more and more people are buying the parts on line to do it themselves. It will cost the shops more money in the long just because they are being greedy and profiteering now . Good luck to you and thanks for the vid 🦘🇦🇺🍻

Peach I'm also from WA I totally agree with what you're saying about our dealers In Western Australia, I've done a comment above. I have the following stihl items, MS170, 038 Super, 660 Magnum chainsaws, BG 56 Blower, FS 55 Brush cutter, HS 45 Hedge Trimmer, KM 131 Kombi engine with, carbon fibre extension, pole pruner & edge trimmer attachments. It's unrealistic to get these items serviced on regular occasions. 1 thing I've noticed though is shop around between dealership stores, they all charge different prices for new chains & parts.
I have these and im struggling pretty bad with some seriously woody hedges. I have 2 sets of blades. I'm torn between the 56 and the 81(i think) to step up a bit because i am having a tough time. Will the 56 do fine, vs the 81( which is backoreded and might be awhile before my dealer can get it)
Ryan the 56 cuts way better than the 45 but it may not have the needed power. Can you rent in your area? I’d recommend the HS81R/82R for thicker stuff. Maybe rent one and try it out. It’s an awesome machine
@@Carlsmower i wish you had messenger lol id show you what im dealing with. No, there's no rental for that here, so I either order the 81/82 and wait forever and just finish the job with what i got...or go get the 56 and make due. I run the 45 and the km111 with hedger attachment as a companion but that will murder the ol' back/shoulders after a couple hours lolololol
Ironic since Stihl is probably a German name...but in general, I concur absolutely. We Australians generally agree with the British version of English, but with additional words. We'll leave Ashes cricket out of this agreement though.
Good thing I didn't buy into this motomix scam cause then I wouldn't even be able to buy grocery's. I'm a professional and ill stick with premium pump gas with Echo Red Armor. See I own tools by Stihl and Echo and neither of them get this pre mixed bullshit. I like to preferably.. use the E10 pump gas in my tools tanks with in 1 month but.. I've also bought used tools where the seller told me the pump gas had been in there for like 3 months and it started right up. Just like most say.. you could buy 1 or 2 brand new tools for the price of running pre mixed gas over the course of 1 tool.
Erik glad your fuel is working for you, unfortunately not everyone is so lucky (or conscientious). I have seen enough fuel issues that it makes sense to me to use a pre-mix on a unit that is going into hibernation or gets little use.
@@Carlsmower I can buy alcohol free 93 octane and mix my own which I do. I find the HS 45 to be an aggravating machine to start. I have a Stihl Yard Boss that fires right up but not the HS 45.I just bought a Milwaukee Fuel cordless and , for me, it wins hands down over the Stihl gas. I will make somebody a good deal on the Stihl.

Thanks for the feedback and the like and subscribe. Enjoy your HS45 Stihl Hedge Trimmer
Great video didnt know about the gearbox lubrication.
Glad to help!
First class lesson. Good sensible advice without the bullshit. Cheers!

I got the 18" inch blade can I buy and install the blade from the HS 82 R blade to the HS 45 ?
Well done keep it up 👍
Amazing video. Would be nice to show in the video of you taking off the spark arrestor etc

what kind of " grease". You mentioned the brand of gas and lube for the blades.
After replacing my hs45 clutch it refuses to start. It has spark fuel and compression.
do you have a video on how to replace throttle cable on hs 45

The Stihl Degreaser and Lubricant doesn't seem to be available. Would WD40 work as well?
It will lubricate, but it doesn’t cut the pitch the same.
Good video Question: why don’t you use orange lever ( not engaging the blades) on the side?
That's a blade lock like on a chain saw.
