I will definitely be trying these starbursts. I have freeze dried milk duds(cutting them in half), skittles, lemon heads(putting them in the oven for a bit first. The last candy I freeze dried is the red hots. I popped them in the oven for a bit then freeze dried them. They didn't change in size, but oh man are they so good. They turned out a little crispy . My sister was over and she couldn't stop eating them. lol God bless you and your family....Sherri-Idaho
I got a freeze dryer for Christmas. So far we’ve done skittles, marshmallows and apples. I have a bag of starbursts but wasn’t sure how to do them. They are going in tomorrow now that I know! Thanks! And Alaska is beautiful
They don't work, u need to pre heatbthem for an hour at least otherwise they just become a tooth breaking lil brick the goal is to getbthem.puffy and airy like the jolly ranchers, I suggest tray warming both candies for an hour
I recently saw a fellow (he has a channel on freeze drying as well) ….. and has a recipe for “Carmel Apples”🍎 …… Apparently, this is a HUGE hit with Customers! I cannot wait to get a freeze dryer. You might want to try those, if you like Carmel Apples. Of all the Recipes, I’ve seen (and Ive read Every one I could find) it appears, Honey Crisp Apples have the BEST taste, and using a bottle to drizzle the Carmel, works Best. ❤Have Fun!
Interesting. I don’t do freeze drying, but had recently had freeze-dried Werthers, which were DIVINE. This popped into my recommended videos, and I was interested to see the process.
I am going to experiment with that - the more melty the starburst get the better they will expand and the oven I think gets them more melty than just the freeze dryer warming. If warming trays and not doing oven, I would even set it for like 20 minutes and see how that turns out
affiliates.harvestright.com/2097.html I purchased from Harvest Right! You can buy online through the link, some businesses carry them in stock like Sportmans Warehouse. This is different than dehydrating - you have to have the freeze dryer which uses a vacuum pump to be able to do the candy.
Thank you ever so much for replying. I can't imagine how busy you always are! I'm struggling with freeze drying gummy candy. Do you have any suggestions / tricks/ tips? I just can't seem to get it!
One thing I’ve learned is some gummy candies just don’t work great :/ it’s kind of trial and error. If you aren’t using parchment paper as a tray liner, I would do that too! I do have a playlist on my channel of all the candy videos I’ve done, there may be some that you haven’t tried that work good!
They are good for about 3-4 months I would say! I tried a bag that I knew was older than that maybe 6 months (was an old one I never sold) and it tasted old like a bit soggy, not much crunch anymore.
When you do Candy or really anything. How do you know how much extra dry time should you add. Basically I’m worried about something finishing when I’m asleep or not home. What do I do? Thank you!
It's totally ok for candy or any food to keep drying longer than needed... if I'm going to be gone or think something will be done overnight, I add a bunch of dry hours so the dryer will just keep my food/candy where its at until I can get to it. Most candy I do in 4 hours, but some gummies take up to 12... so kind of just have to experiment.
@@DIYfreezedry so can you change the drying time after it’s already started. For example I’m doing my 1st run (bread run) and my drying time says 2:44 at the moment and the orange bar is almost finished. How do I add more time so I can go back to sleep?
Did you try to warm the trays the first time you put them in and they weren't successful? I'm confused on why to use the oven if warming the trays would do the same thing from what I'm learning. However, I haven't done starburst so I don't know. Just learning. Thanks for sharing in advance.
No problem! I’ve tried both ways - the oven warming gets it more melty than the regular tray warm in the freeze dryer. When they get more melty they puff up more in the freeze dryer. Some candies don’t need any warming, but any that you’re finding aren’t turning out or expanding well - a lot of times oven warming can help.
Hello, I found your channel. I am from Colombia and I bought a freeze-drying machine with my savings to start my business. since my country is super difficult to find work. Thanks for your help and advice. By any chance you don't have a manual where you can share to guide me on this path. thank you so much and you are the best
I don't have any type of manual, but I do have playlists on my channel with lots of videos of things I have freeze dried! Hopefully they are helpful for you! I am excited for your business to get going, I wish you good luck!
The candies that I know puff up I always cut in half before freeze drying like Jolly Ranchers and things with caramel in them - sometimes they still hit the top and make a mess 😆
I’m think I might have told you about skipping you press the harvest right icon also I noticed you have -10 on your freeze time no need to freeze for starburst but some people swear by it for gummy style
Mine are still pretty hard too - but with this pre warming method they aren’t as hard as before when I just put them right into the freeze dryer. I like them more if a melt in your mouth candy not chewing haha
Just found your channel as I am getting into freeze drying as well. I grew up in Wasilla, but now down here in the oven we call Texas. So looking forward to winter as this summer as been tough. I do have a question as I have only done research for Texas's Cottage food laws, does Alaska require labels on your products like they do here in Texas?
Oh awesome you grew up here! We are in Wasilla a lot for our kids gymnastics. I feel you on the Texas heat, my sister lives there and tells us it’s been crazy hot 🥵 Yes - we have the same laws about needing a label stating it is prepared in a home kitchen and some other information - I don’t remember exactly what it says but you’re supposed to have it on there.
Awesome, I figured that, my freeze dryer arrives Friday, looking forward to getting started. two things I miss about Alaska are the mountain views and the fishing. Thanks for your reply and the videos you upload.@@DIYfreezedry
@@atwellchris nice that’s exciting it’s coming this week!! Have fun with it! I agree the mountains here are breathtaking just driving around I’m always in awe at how pretty it is here
I've been experimenting with my own "candy mode". Since the candy isn't technically freeze dried, I started manually turning the heater on, loading the trays and let them warm for about 15-20 minutes. After they are warm, I manually turn on the vacuum pump and let it run until the candy seems done (an hour-ish). Seems to work well and it saves electricity because the machine isn't cooling.
When I go into the Customize screen, There is no candy mode. It sounds like you have figured out how to do it manually. I will fiddle with it and see if I can make it work.
@@louisethomas8385You have to download and install the updated software in order to get Candy Mode. However, some people were having issues with the updated version and since I'm a it's not broke don't fix it kinda gal I've left ours alone. If you want to take the risk it is an option.
If you have a newer machine and it's already updated, Harvest Right freeze dryers already know that it's "candy mode" when you have programmed a higher dry temperature and it'll say it right on the customized screen. If it doesn't automatically detect that and then you selecta more ambience room temperature for the freeze temp.
I love to FD nerd gummy clusters into what I call "NERDIES" since the company doesn't like anyone calling them nerds. 😂 I think they look like a little Goosebumps or light bulbs or covid cells or pufferfish😊
Actually, Freeze Drying has been around since pre-historic times. Butif you want to get technical then you would need to credit the Mayan's for freeze drying.. They actually used a natural form of freeze drying a type of potato by taking the potato's up the moantians during the winter months
I actually just learned that a few months ago my daughter is studying Mayans in 4th grade and she had a whole presentation she showed me that talked about how they freeze dried food 😱 so cool!!

I heated them at 250 degrees in the oven for about 7 minutes - I wanted to make sure I pulled them out before they fully melted

How long did tou dry for
Also have you yried red hots. Ive tried heating them in oven first and I cant get them to work

Do the starburst go back to chewy after you are eating on it
They more just kind of melt away! They don’t become chewy again
Just as good left in wrapper with no pre warming
Oh I’ll have to try that next time! Would save tons of time not unwrapping everything 👏 thanks for sharing!
So, don't even remove Starburst from the wrapper? Do they pop out on their own then?
what if you warmed the trays for longer time rather than using the oven?
