Gigabyte Brix GB-BXBT-2807 Fanless Mini PC Review - XBMC, Gaming, Windows 8

  • Buy it on Amazon - lon.tv/brix (affiliate link). Gigabyte just came out with this little fanless PC called the Brix that delivers surprisingly good performance in a package about the size of a set top box. The best part is its low price - the computer itself is about $125-$130 without RAM or a hard drive. But it's possible to fully equip it for less than $200.
    VIDEO INDEX:
    0:14 - Hardware overview
1:33 - Internal configuration (memory and hard drive)
    2:50 - Windows 8 boot time demonstration
3:12 - Kerbal Space Program demo
3:58 - Dolphin Gamecube Emulator demo with Mario Sunshine
4:32 - XBMC Demonstration wtih Blu Ray MKV and HD HomeRun
    5:44 - Conclusion and Windows 8 Performance
The Brix is powered by a new Intel Celeron N2807 Processor with integrated graphics. Modern gaming is a not recommended on the device, but it works great with older games as well as retro emulation.
It is fanless and completely quiet - even under load. This is very attractive for home theater users that don't want noisy fans interfering with a well tuned home theater receiver. It consumes 30 watts of power under load - only slightly more power than a Roku or other set top box.
Performance is remarkable - especially considering the price point. It runs Windows 8.1 beautifully as well as XBMC - including demanding tasks like streaming Blu Ray MKV files as well as tuning live television from an HD HomeRun Prime.

For those curious about the RAM compatibility, it seems that any 1.35v stick of DDR3L will work. I pulled some from an old laptop that wasn't on the compatibility list and it worked just fine.

I'm between this and an Asrock mini ITX motherboard with J1900 CPU, but I like the Brix more because it's footprint and all in one package. Hopefully Broadwell or other future more efficient architectures will help for more CPU power in the fanless segment. What I don't understand is why don't they use a bigger (140mm) high quality low RPM fans with i3, i5 CPUs? Noctua for example makes near completely silent fans (I have one on the PSU that powers my intel atom D2550 fanless board) and honestly.. I can't hear a thing. I also use their ULNA adapter that lowers the rpm even more. A big fan like that at low RPM on top of this small PC would allow a lot more CPU power, without sacrificing silence.

Just got one. I put in Mint Linux 17. Worked right out of the box. Of course there are no drivers for Linux on the included DVD so I'll have to roll my own later.
But full screen 1920x1080 videos played fine. Just a few dropped frames. Not even noticeable unless you're looking for frame drops.

I think because it is a low cost way to put a small dead silent HTPC or PC together fast without needing any building skills. Plus it is just about the same size as a set-top box so it can be put anywhere.

Tear out the wifi and get a small MPCIE SSD for the OS that will give some very smooth browsing of e.g. XBMC and leave a spot for some larger 2½" storage for those that hasn't got a Nas around the house, then u can just get a 10-20$ USB wifi-dongle instead (or just use the cable as the PC supports it and then have a spare USB for other uses) and get a HTPC keyboard and u got an awesome small mediacenter.

    • @jtdcjtdc

    • @MrSn3akr
      @MrSn3akr 9 лет назад +1

Jan dela Cruz I can't really figure the differences between Mini PCIe and mSATA, other than there should be some electrical differences and that mSATA runs over the SATA controller with a theoretical 6gbps and Mini PCIe uses a PCI lane and has a theoretical 10gbps bandwidth. but they both uses just about same PCB and they use the same slot???
      M.2 is 2nd gen mSATA.
But the cardslot in the Brix is Mini PCIe so just get a SSD for that slot and your golden.

Avoid the i series models until the newer versions come out without the silver edge bevel strip as they OVERHEAT due to an ENGINEERING FLAW where the centrifugal fan intake is blocked by the shiny black top cover. If you look at the newer 5th gen Intel SKUs they replaced the top cover to give the fan enough gap to suck in air.

Great video i'm beyond a novice when it comes to even a build like this but I am going to give it a try. I had some questions about the ram. Is there a specific type of ram I need and are there different qualities of ram on the market. Are they all a clone of one another and it doesn't matter which one you buy from where you just want the ram for your pc? Finally is there a limit to how much ram you can add to the unit before it hampers functionality. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Aero Phoenix League of Legends does work on Brix BXBT-2807... Kinda... At minimum details (50-60FPS@1024x768), CPU heats up to 80°C in ~25-30 minutes of gameplay (one match), then the framerate drops to less than half. Warcraft 3 DotA could work well enough. FYI, CPU's temperature stays at around 60°C without heavy load (internet radio playback only).

    • @aerophoenix1
      @aerophoenix1 9 лет назад

Nigweth Neadriss 80 degrees is way too hot for a CPU in my case, the max I would ever let my CPU go for is 69 degrees.

Aero Phoenix Checking the temperatures right now. MoBo@67°C, CPU@61°C, uptime ~2hrs, listening to online radio only.
Edit: Temperatures didn't change a bit for two hours after. Seems like these are common working temperatures.

Hiya, have you ever thought (or anyone, actually) to embed this in a drive bay of a larger case, and run it alongside another computer in the same case, or have it run more hardware inside that larger case? I am thinking of doing this as a project. Honestly, at the price point and capability of these little boxes (there are many of them out there at the time of this comment), it's hard to build a computer without wanting to use something like this as a host for a larger box.

Hi, can you tell me if this mini pc (Gigabyte Brix BACE-3150 Ultra Compact Barebone PC Intel Celeron N3150, 1 x SATA, 1 x DDR3L, USB 3.0, IEEE 802.11 AC, Dual Band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0) - is powerful enough for every day (non-gaming) use (Web surfing, Kodi, Office docs, managing large MKV collection on Ext HDD) if added with a Samsung SSD/8gb Ram/Win10? Thanks.
I know you reviewed an older version but wanted to see how much more powerful this version is or should I spend more on an i3 brix, which is more than twice the price, thanks again.

So I was looking into this mini PC to replace my laptop (samsung np300u1a.) I generally used my laptop to edit videos to put on here (I used Sony Vegas or Light works) and it didn't let me down. Would this be just as good or better as my Samsung or would I be downgrading?

This is nice but... I would buy it if it actually had micro USB 3.0 all around instead of the 2.0.. so I would be able to put my 3.0 harddrive

Hi Lon, would this be able to handle something like minecraft, or osu? Also how well would it handle a streaming website other than youtube (maybe using flash). Thank you

I just wish they made one without the wifi/bluetooth/hdmi/audio so it would be cheaper, or put in a more powerfull cpu, as I want to use one as a server to replace my 10+year old computer (had it for about 3yr) to run a proxy server, ssh server, storage server, and everyonce in a while a game server, the cpu is about 400points better then my old computer on cpubenchmark.net can have more ram and gigabit and it can run a minecraft server better (the only way I ever play minecraft these days is with lots of mods, and thats cpu demanding)

Hello sir, does this works flawlessly to just browse internet, look at pictures, look at videos and work on words/excel etc (basically does it work flawlessly and snappy for everything except gaming, photoshopping and video editing) ? best regards.

Hi. I'm intrested in GB-BXBT-1900 (it has more effective CPU - Celeron J1900). But I wonder if I can turn the device on directly from keyboard ? Is it possible ?
This PC I'd like to use it as Media Center, with win 8.1 installed. I'd like to operate it sitting on my coach using LOGITECH Touch K400 keyboard :-). If the only way to turn computer on is to press the power button on the PC I would be a bit disappointed ...
I know I could hibernate the system, but if there is any other way to power on - I would be very grateful if you light my up :-)

Hi, Lon. Would you recommend this for Netflix/Huliu streaming, word processing and playing Half Life 2-era games? And how difficult is it to put this together for someone who is not familiar with building PCs. Installing the RAM and SSD, operating system, etc. Thanks!

I am looking for some fan less pc for full hd video playing, youtube, browsing on my TV. This one looks good for 123€, but I want to know if it have only stereo, or more channels? Is it coming with some kind of power supply? I thinking about ZOTAC ZBOX nano CA320 too, but it is more expensive. All I need is good media player with youtube and at least 5.1 sound.

Hi Lon, I commented on another Video you had, about getting about 2T of movies from a mycloud to play on 3 Vizio tvs. (Vizio aperantly cant play mp4s) it apears that my best solution is to install Universal Media Server, Plex or Serviioon a pc and have the pc sit next to the NAS (mycloud) and be on for all eternity. Is this BRIX good for that?
