  • Legend has it that the oldest structure in Southern California is a 600-year-old pagoda at Yamashiro in the Hollywood Hills. It was moved to Los Angeles from Japan at the request of the Bernheimer brothers, who built the "mountain castle" using influences from Japanese architecture and landscape design.
    But the influx of Japanese-inspired decor and even buildings, like the shrine on Mount Yamashiro, owes a credit to the Chicago World's Fair of 1893 and architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Historic architect and preservationist Fran Offenhauser shares how.

    Actually, Greene and Greene architects of Pasadena had MUCH more to do with importing Japanese architectual elements in Southern California at the turn of the century than Frank Lloyd Wright. MUCH MORE.
