Before he re-released it, I had never heard Days Before Rodeo, despite being a huge Travis fan. I like to keep my listening to one platform, so if music isn’t on Spotify, I usually don’t listen to it. Just for consistency in sound quality sake. I was excited to see it come out, mostly because I had no idea what to expect, so it was almost like him dropping something new. Even tho it’s 10 years old, and you can definitely tell by the sounds and mixing on it, I was surprised by the quality of most tracks. The Prayer was a very dark and mysterious opener, Mamacita had a fun vibe, DYSTI was super catchy, and I can see why it’s a fan favorite for many, and other songs like Skyfall, Zombies, and Basement Freestyle had some really unique ideas in them. I was mostly excited for Backyard. I had an unofficial Spotify version of it in my playlist for a while. And when I heard it was coming officially, I got so excited. And with a better mix, it sounds even better now. Easily a top 15 Travis song for me. Overall, I loved DBR, and while I prefer the likes of Rodeo, Birds, and Astro, it’s definitely a great release, and overall makes his catalog stronger imo. I’d probably have it around Utopia level. Idk which I prefer, but I’d give them a similar score. Only skip for me is Sloppy Toppy. Just not a fan of the primitive Migos sound, especially Quavo’s voice. Definitely sounds better on Rodeo. Plus the beat isn’t that special. Still, a very strong project for its era.

When it comes to Gangster rap albums, imo Savage Mode 2 is the best of all time. Every song is perfectly executed . Right next to Heroes & Villains as metro’s best production, and fits 21 so well, allowing him to find flows and pockets he’s never found before. Features are Few but super strong (yes you could argue the drake feature isn’t aging well, but i still love it). 21 is rapping in peak form, his flows, his punchlines, hooks, Demeanor, everything is on point. 21’s best songs reside here: Runnin, Glock In My Lap, Brand New Draco, Many Men, so many bangers. I won’t claim my knowledge of Gangster rap is vast, I’ve got many to listen to. But of what I have heard, I haven’t heard an album in its field as consistent, as calculated, as clean, and as fun to listen to. On top of that, you get a level up for 21 when it comes to showing sides of himself. RIP Luv is a great showcase of 21’s struggle with love, My Dawg is a very strong storytelling track. Snitches & Rats dives into 21’s morals a bit. Definitely in the perfect tier, and for me it’s definitely a 10/10. Miles clear of Savage Mode 1.
