Those that have raced, or even just worked, on the Dakar Rally are often asked the question, "How much does it cost to do the Race?" It's a really hard question to answer because 1. there are lots of ways to do the Dakar. You've go self-supported amateurs in the Original by Motul class and Legends of Car Racing in the T1 car class. 2. It's such a long, complex event that the little things just keep adding up... like the entry fee for bikes, which starts at 15,700€.
Rally bike racer Skyler Howes breaks down the costs of doing the Dakar Rally as a privateer for us. You might be shocked at some of these figures...

Well done to Red Bull Rally for searching out the little guys! Phenomenal effort on the event coverage .
There is a Man that won't Lay in His Death Bed saying " I Wish I Had" done this or that.
Best Wishes! M.H.
If Howes is working a day job and finishing 5th overall after Stage 11, imagine what he could do with a factory ride and training full time.
Skyler is awesome and I totally think you'll see him on a factory ride at some point. He deserves it!
Hell yeah this guy is LEGIT
Yeah, dude bet on himself and rode himself onto a factory team I'd bet. You don't luck out and finish top 5 in Dakar, it takes real talent.
Yeah, we'll see more of him for certain!
Ross Branch rode with a Dutch support team last year and ended 13th and best rookie, now he is on the Yamaha factory team....you can guess what's waiting for Skyler
Chasing a dream at any cost! He did very well too. Someone get this guy factory support.
Or he could just get more sponsors.
@@gruesomeloki Gettings sponsors also involves time. Time can also be used to practice and take care of yourself.
From his go fund me page…”Skyler has officially signed a multi year contract with Rockstar Husqvarna racing on the FR450.”
@@overbuiltlimited I followed him on instagram after seeing his consistency on last year's Dakar. I was just so happy for him when he signed that contract and could finally afford a brand-new pickup truck. He deserves it for what he'd done.
And thats a bike, can't even imagine the fees for a car privateer
Thats absurd!! I will never be able to spend this.. I just can't justify it.
Racing werent cheap! Especially for privateers competing with factory backed teams
@@zyh6566 you can if you win😅
Rent Hilux with over drive cost around 500.000 € not sure if 25.000 fees included
Team Coronel #347 says €600.000 they bring their own built buggy (lasts multiple years) a big truck and a huge pickup for media/press.
Massive props to him, takes a lot of guts to live your dream like that. With that sort of commitment he'll go far in life either way - hope everything works out for him and thanks for sharing!
Biggest Respect to Skyler. It takes balls to commit that much! :)
I got the balls but not the $90K to throw around. He’s just having fun while I’m the one committed to fund his privilege with cheap pay! I wonder how much he’s making that allowed him to spare $90K.
@@mohamedsiddig2850 what?
Put Skyler on a factory team bike NOW!!!
HE IS THE NEXT LEGEND!!
Met him in Greece Rally 2019,what a rider!!
Wow! I hope Team KTM takes note. A rider like Skyler Howes who is riding so well and dedicated should be on the team. He has clearly proven his skill and maturity. This is one of the best 2021 Dakar true stories I've seen online. Kam
Very expensive, but he will never forget this adventure it will be with him for the rest of his life, very few people can say "I have done the Dakar" especially on a bike that is a special person. WOW.
Really glad you did this video. Glad Tyler is doing so well
Get the man factory support. 5th overall
he drives for husqvarna what i read on the internet for now
Riding for Husqvarna Factory
Team now! Well done, boy! 💪💪💪
PURE HEART is all I can summarise from this...
To love something so much you sell everything you have knowing you could still end up with nothing but a pure incredible time and experience is something so amazing it shows what PURE HEART this guy has....
Don't want to be negative and it's a great event - but - this is kind of the reason I follow the race a little less these days. Dakar was started as something else - something doable by crazy mortals with a dream, a bike, a reasonable budget, some time and (probably) an awesome spouse. What it is now is a "big (huge) professional money race". I understand it's a big production and the costs are justified but for me (again, strictly personal), AER or other Rallye-style events that are more in the spirit of the original Dakar are more interesting. Crazy Malle Dakar guys are close to this original model (it's nuts - and amazing) - but it's still $50K to do that even and it's all about sponsorship. Like most sports I guess - becomes about "the money" over time. I like a little less speed and finesse - and a little more relatability I guess. Congrats to all the competitors and organizers on this year's event.
Couldn't agree more. Came here to say exactly that. My heart sank when I saw he was spending 40-50k renting a bike and a specialist mechanic to service it for him the whole time.
One of the things I like about the Dakar rally, as a motorcycle enthusiast, is the fact that it's feasible, doable, for a self-reliant amateur to take part (unlike the cars which demand teams and big budgets by default). So I was excited at the idea of a privateer speaking on it (having done the maths myself several times whilst day dreaming) ... But I was disappointed pretty quickly by the relatively pro budget, the specialist mechanic etc.
In fairness, they did present this guy as semi-pro ... But I'd have found it much more interesting if they spoke to some guy who at the very least serviced his own bike. Maybe such participants simply don't exist any more ?
To put it another way ... I'm also into adventure touring. This is relevant because the situation with Dakar, and this kind of big-budget approach to amateur participation, reminds me of two well known motorcycle adventure documentaries: ''The Long Way Round" and "Mondo Enduro" ... I am very, very, very much aligned with the philosophy employed in Mondo Enduro and very much uninspired & uninterested with the philosophy employed in The Long Way Round. If you've seen both documentaries you will know *exactly* what I mean. If you haven't seen them, you should check them out. I'm sure you'll love Mondo Enduro at least.
Just to add to this ... I've read some more of the comments throughout this video, and I'm amazed by all the people saying this guy isn't rich.
If you own a house and you have 90k worth of possessions in that house, multiple motorcycles etc ... That's rich in my world. If you can afford to sell that 90k worth of possessions to fund a 2 week motorcycle adventure ... Ya that's rich in my world.
I think it speaks to your point about how expensive Dakar has become ... People are so accustomed to the money involved that a guy with 90k in possessions, not including house, isn't seen as a rich participant.
@@DD-co1zn The self supported people race Dakar as 'malle moto'. Check out Lyndon Poskitt's RUclips
The same goes for F1 , ruined by money and media.
@@ThisIsTheInternet hey, I was very relieved to find the 'malle motto' category after making that post. I applaud the organisers for keeping this category alive 🤟🏼 ... Thanks for the suggestion, apologies for only seeing it now
Congratulations to Skyler on the Husqvarna team rider position in 2022!
When Red Bull has a beter coverage than the original outlet!
Well done RB!
in Lithuania we have like 2 hours show each day on the Dakar, probably that's why we have the most racers per capita
90k EUROS for the life time experience that only a very tiny few can relate to an incredible chapter in life... worth it
And seems like pretty legit results to go with it 👌
Or 90k euros into $BB $GME 🤣
@@sijosue well there is that... but the powers that be are trying to stop it. #billionairesbecryin 🤣
People fly thousands of kilometres above at much faster speeds. It's not an achievement if you ask me
@@Vedrajrm mate don't try to undermine his efforts and achievements...if it isn't much of an achievement why don't you go on and try it for yourself...
Wish all the best to Skyler...an inspiring commitment.
He sure hell gotta a new fan from Malaysia now ...
Thanks for the candid info Tyler. You deserve a factory ride.
buying a BMW, and having to take 2 weeks off from work, KTM, pick this man up, he's posting real results and he a privateer who has a day job
Fascinating.
Thank you so much for this video.
☮
U my idol now! HUGE RESPECT MAN!!
@RedBull. Thanks for video clips and interesting reporting.
With that sort of spirit, you are already a winner!! Ride on fella
Much respect. Hope you win buddy
Howes has finished 5th, ahead to maany pro pilots. I’m sure next year he is going to be in a pro team. He is the second KTM to finish.
More of this! Great video
Totally agree with you, been in motorsports and everywhere it's the same , Good luck buddy!!!
I respect that guy. He had a dream and just did it!
Add the cost of getting there and back, getting the bike there and back (inlcuded in rental?), FIM Licence fee, personal gear (helmet etc) and the cost of all the races, gear and bikes you need to get to the level of riding you need to have just to survive a Dakar...
I'd call it €100k without the preceding races/training.
For sure! And maybe add some special insurance!
pretty sure getting the bike there and all that is included with the rental and service part of his deal. But from all the things he said there is missing a lot to get to 90k, so i think he did calculate the gear and travel expenses.
He said 80-90k all in, and he meant 80-90k all in. Add the numbers up, it doesn't hit 80-90k so he's including a lot of extra expenses that he either didn't reference specifically or the video editor cut things short for one reason or another.
The organizers should do a "Classic Bike" category next year, I would like to see the old Beemrs, Cagivas, Hondas, and so on.
KTM is not shitty (I'm not a fan boy). But simply compare how lighter these bikes are and how much power they have compared to the older bikes. I LOOOOVE big, classic thumpers but performance requires more maintenance.
@S B funny how every yamaha factory rider fell out off the rally huh
@@iamandreja they are absolutely shitty when you consider how much work they require just to keep them running. This guy spent 27k having someone else service his. Credit to the guy, but he's a semi-pro (and is trying to go pro, by the looks of things) ... Those guys will use KTM because spending 27k to keep the damn thing running is just the cost of doing business.
Someone who is truly amateur, not vying to go pro etc, is not taking a KTM with them. Not if they have any sense.
@@DD-co1zn I know one can simply buy a rally replica KTM off the shelf.
Are other rally bikes available for sale? or is it only for factory riders?
@@girishs1755 why do you wanna buy it when u can make it yourself for cheaper without the carbon fibre parts though if you don't wanna do dakar or other rally if you want to participate then you'll have to put carbon fibre, more fuel tanks, better headlights and you're done
Rich is the Man who realize the dreams, not who have money in the banks
Both
He had 90k worth of possessions (not including the house). In my world, anyone who has 90k, whether it be in cash or in assets, is rich. Anyone who has 90k in possessions and can afford to spend that on a 2 week motorcycle adventure is absolutely rich.
This guy has gambled everything in the hope he will get a factory ride.
As he should. He absolutely killed it his first entry
If not, he will get hired by the factory at least as a test rider, no doubt
@@PaladinMika Hope so
Bon ma oublier un rêve. Super vidéo merci
Il le fait en mode full option. On peut s'en sortir pour moins cher si on fait la mécanique soi-même, par exemple.
Much respect to this dude.
I Love it. All In‼️
Great vid. Respect to Howes. I hope he’s back for next Dakar
He has a factory ride now, riding for the Husqvarna Factory team
Awesome man, leave the dream you are so right
Wow... Respect to you my friend!!!
Amazing dedication for the best race in the world
Awesome!!!
Massive respect to the guy!
I’m waiting to see the Kushner tent somewhere in the background!
Awesome 👍
Huge respect
Máximo respeito a todos do rally da Dakar, pq não é pra qualquer um e nem pra qualquer bolso! Rsrs
True passion, good stuff! Bet he is good on a mountain bike too hahs
Bravo!
massive respect
An experience very few will ever have, To do the Dakar is the ultimate rally .
A. Dude like this Will be nr1 with that dedication forsure. One solid dude.
He should get some factory backing.
Without a financial support and he is 5th over all. What a super boy 👑 keep it up 👍🏻 big sponsors should have you or they will lose you.
so much respect. No regrets!
Respect wow that's dedication
Nice video
That is crazy!
True dedication
#skylerhowes after that finish - your phone is going to be RED... hot! Fantastic effort
Once in a lifetime experience... you can’t put a price on dreams to live them . 💯🥜🤙🏻🇺🇸
Yeeeeees owesome race😀😀😀👍👍👍
Respect !!!
Wow , good job my friend. That’s no rich boy having everything paid , that’s a man that works all year and sacrificed everything to fulfill his dreams!! Wish you the best!!!
It's pretty absurd to say this guy isn't rich after he's just dropped 40-50k renting a bike and a pro to service it.
Also, as far as I can tell he didn't sell his house ... Which to me would be the realest sacrifice of all.
If you have 80-90k worth of possessions stored in the house you own: you are *RICH*
Let's not get it twisted. All credit to him, but he's rich.
@@DD-co1zn no sir he isn't rich as he sacrificed everything he had
@@ageless1003 he sold all his possessions. He did not sell his house.
Anyone who has 90k worth of possessions is the textbook definition of *RICH* ... Anyone who has 90k worth of possessions AND can afford to sell them to fund a 2 week motorcycling adventure is *absolutely rich*
I don't know who you people are or where you live, but I'm amazed that this level of wealth doesn't qualify as 'rich' wherever or however you live.
@@DD-co1zn here in the Netherlands you can reach 90k when you sell everything besides your house and MTB. This is with a normal income, deff not rich but with a healty mindset and saving instead off going on vacation.
And anyone can afford to sell everything for a "2 week vacation trip in the desert" its just what place call home after the trip :)
@@BartPaashaas You mean the same Netherlands that is one of the *top ten richest countries in the world* ??????? You mean the same Netherlands that is *far richer than its European neighbours* ????????
Man, don't waste my time like this until you've spent at least 5 seconds giving yourself a reality check.
And let's not even speak on what happens when people from the Netherlands lose their grip on reality when it comes to wealth (see: Tulip Mania).
I would like a Honda Cub division
The passion is real
This guy deserves a factory ride. He will get it🇺🇸✊🏼
😁
26,500 EU for mechanic for two weeks and that doesn’t include parts. That seems pretty hefty.
that's a wealth of experience and skill. That ONE mechanic needs to be able to do EVERYTHING correctly and quickly. Still hefty, sure, but it's a very niche market so they can charge a large premium, I'm sure his boss gets a larger cut than he does
its 9,000 euro just for the mechanic entry fee
Mechanic has an entry fee, transport, all the tools and stuff have to be transported to SA, all the preparation beforehand ....not to bad.
It includes the trucks that transport all the shit and the tents etc.
@@banaana1234 that’s making it sound more reasonable
Hats off to this guy.
WOW amazing how much this guy is dedicated and passion about this sport. I really love MTB and i was saving over 1 year money to buy to me proper full sus mtb. So I totally understand when someone like this man sold everything that he has and put 110% of him self to achieve his goals and leave his dream-this rally.
Hat off mister, you are winner in my eyes!
Mad respect for him
Absolute mad lad
Imagine if we set up a gofund me page for him, and he had his 90k to go home to. That would be incredible human spirit. I've donated to david Knight this year!! Spirit like this guy Is 🔥
lets do it!
www.gofundme.com/f/skyler-howes-dakar-rally-fundraiser Yes there is one! I donated before and then after, Skyler is so awesome and this video just adds to it. I really think he will land a factory ride next year!
hell no, his choice his problem
Why? fuck him and his dream. Who is this guy again?
@@Hardy_H_H Lol you’re a delight
Great Job making your dream happen!!
Yea dude all it cost was selling everything he owned just to spend 14 days in the desert playing in the sand with bikes
Serious commitment
Thanks. This was one of my big questions! How Much?
Sold everything he owned to rent a bike... AND finish 5th overall against the BIG factory teams?!! Someone sign this guy up NOW! Absolute legend!
Dedicated, and patience
Big mad respect!
He is now driving for Husqvarna after the 2021 Dakar well deserved!
But 90K plus the transport and the flyed thats heavy but if you want to live youre dream you do everything big respect!
Absolute die-hard legend. If competitors like you weren't there, don't think that Dakar would be happening every year. Competitors should get paid if cross the finish line in any position. Every one the same amount. Points different for competitors doing whole series. Avagud, there's hardly any pov footage of riders through whole race. Long clips of each stage would be awesome to see on youtube. Probably get paid abit for views. Will have another bike in no time.
Does anyone know the name of the song in the background at 1:50?
Well he is chasing his dream
Good on him and good luck
Motor sport is just so expensive
I will enjoy it on tv 👍👍
The price of passion. Cheers!

Anyone know the song in the beginning?
That is what life is all about, you can always make more money, however you may not ever get the chance to ride Dakar so lots of respect and good luck.
I'm never thought you even can rent a bike just to attend for this rally. Hope someday i will hit the Dakar Rally
What are the purse prizes for race?
