These birds, belonging to the piciform group, build their nests by drilling holes in wood. Among the woodpeckers some are practically omnivorous, such as the woodpeckers. Others, such as the woodpeckers, feed on xylophagous larvae and ants. To do so, they use their very long protactile tongue.
