Woodturning - Sycamore Gap is No More!

- Many of you may have heard that the world-famous Sycamore gap tree was felled last month. To mark this somber occasion I took this large piece of sycamore that had been sitting around since being felled for safety reasons and turned it into a large Pot, I thought it would be symbolic to allow life to grow from a felled sycamore.
The pot was sanded to 3000 grit and finished with Danish Oil, and Wood wax.
Let me know what you think of this piece!

Disclaimer:
My videos are for entertainment purposes only. Some of my techniques might not be the "best" or safest, so when using any tool or machinery always read and understand safety/manufacturers guidelines first.
And Yes, I'm aware that wearing gloves while woodturning is considered an unsafe practice. The gloves I wear are tight-fitting and don’t have any loose threads. I wear them for the protection of my skin. This is a risk that I am willing to take, however I am still very conscious of the potential danger and I do not touch any spinning parts of the lathe. DO NOT copy my actions if you feel unsafe doing so. - Хобби

Have they said what will become of the material from the tree?
@@MrDrewmcdonaldthe Woodland Trust are still discussing 😃🪵👍
That was very thoughtful of you. That pot is absolutely gorgeous. Thank you. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks Karen it is such ashame that people think that they can destroy things. I just wanted to pay homage to the wonderful tre 😃🪵👍
This is a wonderful idea and the pot is magnificent and unique. The spalting and markings are awesome it really shines. You are a masterwoodturner and very clever at what you do. Well done Amanda xx
Very nice. I like the symbolism of filling the chainsaw cut in the Sycamore - very clever.
Thanks Sol I wanted to connect this piece to the recent vandalism on nature at Hadrians Wall and that's why I used the chainsaw also. 😃🪵👍
This is beautiful ❤❤❤☘️
Many thanks Liz 😃🪵👍
A riveting watch, thankyou, brilliant work.
Thanks for your comments Tina. Did you like the in fill? 😃🪵👍
I hope one of the local churches is gifted a communion plate and goblet made from the wood. Something ancient and local to be treasured for generations to come.
I agree Clare, I think that they are still deciding on what best to do. 😃🪵👍
Beautiful work of a skilled hands
Thank you for your comment 😃🪵👍
I have always loves sycamore for the beautiful grain. We had a tree in the front yard that would drop a limb once in a while. Back then, I was making wooden necklaces. Now I make jewelry and keepsake boxes. Wish I could find a sycamore now!
Thanks for your comments I find the wood needs to be well seasoned to ensure the grain really shows. 😃🪵👍
Brilliant! Gorgeous! ❤
Thank you Beverly 😃🪵👍
Lovely!
Thank you Linda! Do you like sycamore wood? 😊
Nice work!
Thanks Dave 😃🪵👍
Beautiful
Thank you 😃🪵👍
A beautiful big planter!❤❤
Beautiful, thank you for sharing
That’s some very thin and fine edges. Beautiful
Many thanks for your comments, I wanted to make the edges as thin as I could go, I really pushed the limits on this one... 😃🪵👍
That is absolutely gorgeous!
Great video! The craftsmanship is amazing
I was waiting for the finished product to be a single #2 pencil. Fortunately it's much better than that!
😂🤣 many thanks 😃🪵👍
That's absolutely stunning 😍 such amazing talent 👏 😍
Thank you Sophia, I'm glad you liked it. Did you like the finish? 😃🪵👍
Loved the finish. 💯 Seriously, I wouldn't ever let anyone touch it 😅 everyone should keep their fingerprints to themselves 🤭
@@sophiascarlett27 cotton gloves? 🧤👐😂🤣
Really nice turning. Beautiful grain and finish.
Thank you! Do you like sycamore wood? 😊
Yes, but I LOVE all woods. I think wood is quite majestic.
Nice work Harry,be nice to have your commentary, cheers
Thank you for your comment. I prefer to let the wood speak for itself and allow the tools to tell their own story as they make their changes. 🪵😃👍
That is a lovely piece of pottery
Thanks Ashley, it does look like pottery, the finish is very smooth. 😃🪵👍
Very nice-the wood is beautiful
Beautiful job. I may have considered adding a few more "patches" to make it look like it was all part of the design plan.
Nice one Harry 👍 😊
Thank you, Amber! Do you like sycamore wood? 😊
Great job. Sycamore is a pretty wood.
Many thanks for your comment, I'm really happy how it turned out 😃🪵👍
From damage to beauty! Well done!
Thank you very much Umberto! I'm guessing that comment means you liked the little ash pack work 😉👍
@@HarrySmithWoodturning Of course..I often do the same ..I prefer wod inserts instead o resin..it's easier and more respect for wood
That turned out very nice.
Thank you 😃🪵👍
so pretty
Thank you, Chris! Do you like sycamore wood? 😊
Yes and just the way I love color, I love all woods. Each has it's own hue and patterns, just have to expose it through art.@@HarrySmithWoodturning
Very nice Harry. 👍🏻
Many thanks 😃🪵👍
That is awesome.
Thanks Heather. Did you have a favourite part? 😃🪵👍
Love this one mate great work as always I'd love to give something that big a try
Thanks Dave, give it a go. Its always a bit scary first time.... 😃🪵👍
The Tree at Hadrian's Wall?
It was a fliming Location of Robin Hood. Prince of Thieves 1991.
Correct Rob, such a sad thing to happen. Mindless vandalism to nature! 😃🪵👍
Thanks.
❤
Thank you 😃🪵👍
Beautiful work, Harry. Sorry to hear about the tree being cut down. I'd love to see the mess some of your projects leave behind when you're done.
It was really sad news and has had a negative impact on the view. I'll have to post a post turn photo 😂 What part of this project did you like? 😃🪵👍
@@HarrySmithShorts The detail of the mouth where you have a very thin edge was impressive. Also, the curved interior came out very nice.
@@WindRidgeWoodCrafts thanks 😊
Superb Harry
Thank you very much Les! What did you think about the patch work? 😉👍
Honestly, it was a shame it had to be done. I would of preferred it to be made to look far more intentional with some very different wood or feature, so I would just keep it at the back out of sight. Otherwise, beautiful work though. @@HarrySmithWoodturning
Beautiful. Just beautiful
Impressive finish nice job.👍👍
Thanks David did you like the infill? 😃🪵👍
@@HarrySmithShorts I think it gives it a very modern look far beyond just fixing a defective.
@@davidglaum2538 thanks 😊
Amazing! What finishes did you use here?
Again, great work.
Hi Robert- check the details in the more tab next to the title, which provides more details on the project. Thanks for watching 😃🪵👍
This is a particularly lovely piece, but I was wondering, even though it was a clearly aged piece of sycamore wood, would it be possible that as it ages more, could cracks still develop in it as age dries it still more.
Hello Charles you are correct it was seasoned for well over a year outside and then brought in to dry. I tested the moisture content prior to turning and the sides and base are very thin. There shouldn't be any movement now ... 😃🪵👍
Any particular reason why you didn't use the coring systems that would have allowed you to make several puts from this one piece of wood rather than wasting all the inside material?
Where do you get the coins you insert nto your beautiful creations
Hello Bill take a look in the 'more' tab next to the title. You will find the link in there. 😃🪵👍
What a piece of art as always
Good on you mate I loved it
What’s the RPM while u r drilling Harry??
Many thanks for your comments. I was drilling between 120-200 RPM. 😃🪵👍
Sycamore trees are really better suited for growing in rural settings, where the nasty allergens emitted by the leaves…don’t trigger respiratory stress.
Sycamore root systems can also be problematic, as they typically cause sidewalks & curbs to heave.
Thanks Philip, typically you don't hear to many deaths as a result of the Hypoglycin A poison contained within the leaves or seeds. Probably more likely to be killed by a falling tree limb! Always good to be aware though 😃🪵👍
😂 Hadrians wall seemed to be coping very well with the Sycamore root system, until some idiot took it into their own hands and decided to cut it down!!!!
@@solidarityworkers6900 yes Sol, the wall and tree in perfect symmetry.... until the vandals arrive 😃🪵👍
9:52 why?
The wood was still very rough and the curve made it difficult to draw an accurate pencil line, hence the use of tape to provide a straight line for the saw cut 😃🪵👍
AMAZING JOB 🎉. You need new gloves.
🤣😂🧤
Thanks Madeleine I wish I could afford a new pair!! 😂😂
What I want know if the people who felled this tree, were led to believe that there is treasure buried under the root. Well if you have read the Alchemist, you know what I am on about.
I agree 😃🪵👍
You must be retired or have insomnia
Thanks for your comment Ron. I am neither and I'm 22. I do however have a fantastic hobby which others appreciate and it provides them with entertainment, ideas and education of processes which they can use in their projects 😃🪵👍
As a "professional " wood turner, you must know it is very dangerous to wear gloves whilst turning!
Thanks for your comment Roger, it's always a regular topic. I choose to wear gloves to protect from flying chips and splinters. It works for me and a great many others. I do not promote it and there is a disclaimer on all video. Each to their own 😃🪵👍
