Abandoned Cemetery - Mount Moriah

  • Amongst fields of cloaked tombstones, strange trees loom and thorned weeds grow.
Land once famed, now dragged below by gripping vines that flesh did sow.
Countless eyes of statues stare, and though cold stone they seem aware.
Perhaps evoking a time that there were flowers here, and quiet prayer.
Rolling hills of family plots, lost to time, flora. Forgot.
The city beyond seems know not the lessons that these lands have taught.
What see you in these lost tombs, sadness for those here consumed?
Know that all is nature's womb, and here the dead return in bloom.
Where one sees souls no more remembered, these lost things the earth does treasure.
And through their quiet, slow surrender, return to life in newborn splendor.
All is not gone, but rather found throughout these hills of briared ground.
The graves below grass aren't drowned. That is the peace which here is found.
Leaves conceal but too embrace the dead across this desolate space.
The past remains in fractured grace beyond the Mount Moriah gates.

Those two words perfectly describe the old cemetery, so we appreciate that you felt that way from the video. It means we represented it properly.

You do some beautiful work! Beautiful song, too; it always helps that I live in the area of Mount Moriah and I've walked through this cemetery many times and doing so provides me with a creepy yet peaceful sense of well being...
Which is what you provided me with when I watched this video.
    Again. Thank you.

Thank you very much. We have "known" Mount Moriah for years, but it actually took us two solid years until we were able to make a video that we felt properly portrayed what the grounds feel like to wander through. Obviously nothing on a computer screen (or phone) will ever truly compare to the real experience, but your comment really helps us feel like we accomplished what we set out to make.

Appreciate that. We said the same 'life and death' comment while filming actually. Those gypsy moth caterpillars were EVERYWHERE that day... so were ticks unfortunately.

Thanks Jerry. Sorry for the lack of dates, we felt that hanging in static shots on the stones like that would disrupt the flow of the video. If you want, you can swing by our website entry on Mount Moriah. There's photography there which can be clicked on and enlarged, some of those will likely show more legible dates - antiquityechoes.blogspot.com/2016/07/mount-moriah-cemetery.html

This was our first black-and-white video, and required us to shift our filming rather dramatically, so it's great to hear you enjoyed it!

I'm surprised Mount Moriah Cemetery is in this condition, considering that some of the most notable historical figures from the days of the Wild West are interred here.
Also, is it just me or does it look like the tomb of Thomas H Hoy (ruclips.net/video/zMtBb0HaYyE/видео.html) had been previously disturbed by grave robbers, as it appears that the entry way has been resealed at some point with cinder blocks

Many of the free-standing mausoleums were indeed sealed to keep out those who were disturbing the remains, and all-around damaging the crypts. There's a wonderful volunteer group called 'The Friends Of Mount Moriah Cemetery' who have been doing wonders with the property. Here's their Facebook page - facebook.com/groups/Fommci/
