  • I was looking for a budget solution to streamlining my commonly used video editing actions and shortcuts, so I bought this cheap programmable keypad from Aliexpress - here's how I set it up.
Links below are not affiliated in any way:
The keyboard is this one: www.aliexpress.com/item/10050...
(I chose the variant with no keycaps and no LEDs)
    The keycaps:www.aliexpress.com/item/10050...
It runs QMK firmware: docs.qmk.fm/#/ (preinstalled, so not difficult to get started)
It can be programmed using QMK configurator: config.qmk.fm
But I found VIA to be easier: caniusevia.com/
If you bought one exactly like this and you need the JSON files (or you want to print legends exactly the same as mine), resources are here: 1drv.ms/f/s!Ar4eOUAx-yGwiKojs...

Though I use different software, I have equal utility for something like this and will likely replicate most of your keymapping for my video editor to start with and go from there. Incidentally, as you get more used to your key layout, you may find it helpful to place a dot of clear nail polish on the center key to help orient your fingers over the keys (like the nubs on "F" and "J" with most QWERTY keyboards).

Personally I'd make adding shift select all, but I like combo keyboard shortcuts myself, so all of these would be a numberpad using a mode button, if I were to get this. My own personal solution was the XP-Pen AC19, which is actually a £25 remote control for touch screen tablets. It only has 9 programable keys, but you can setup three different "pages" for a total of 27 keys, using a 10th key to switch between pages. Neat features, but it sort of makes it difficult to add legends. But it has a rotating dial, which can be used to scrub the timeline and that is extremely useful. I also like that you can set up key pages for different applications and the software will automatically switch to the one you're using. The remote feels pretty cheap, but that's probably because it is. It's wireless and runs off AAA batteries (not a fan of not being able to use it wired, but hey, wireless is good). Definitely recommend it.

For workstations that are a bit more single use, those cash register keyboards are a nice solution, too. They contain a load of recappable keys sometimes in addition to a normal letter part or just on their own. Just need to double check that they are reprogrammable and don't have a fixed mapping.

For functions I would add / change for my use case having a button to add the default transition onto a clip would be great, lots of fades between things and using an audio fade between clips for less of a drastic change. Something that there isn't a default hotkey for but could be of great use with a Macro would a simple key press to add a text layer into your timeline.

Most programs that I use day to day primarily edit text, so my preferences are coloured by that. I prefer to memorize keyboard shortcuts or to reconfigure them to resemble sets of shortcuts I am already familiar with. I haven't seen the same problems you (may) have with software updates, but then I guess I'd find a workaround of writing down all my preferred changes (which I understand is the work you're trying to avoid in the first place).

I do audio production primarily and this seems like it could be helpful. Might look into it. Thanks, AS.

ha! I have a razor Tartarus that I need to configure for this exact purpose. this is amazing thank you for this video

no relegendable keycaps on the Tartarus tho 🙀 hmmm
I must find a use for it though, I bought it simply because it looked cool like the Nintendo gamer glove, but better. I wonder if it has changeable keys

I myself use a second keyboard but it is harder to find and remember macros with just letters. Very interesting way to this

If I had one, I don't think I'd use Copy, Paste or Undo. Those key combos are so thoroughly ingrained in muscle memory after so many years, I'd probably end up moving my hand back to the full keyboard to hit Ctrl+C every time.

Thoughtful of them to include an "Any" key in that keyboard map. I always wondered where that one was.

Perfect use case for this product. For me a Stream Deck is good as I use Bitfocus Companion rather than the bundled software. It allows me to send OSC commands to the software I use

Yeah, if you want API integration, stream deck is definitely the choice. I think that also stands true if you want a solution that works across multiple applications.

Neat, I might get one of these as switch tester.

That's pretty cool actually, I could do with one of these keyboard for when I edit or work on my cnc programme.
Hey Mike, I have a small video idea for you.
Have you ever tried growing things hydroponically? Perhaps tree's (apple and lemons are the ones I have going right now) and other non short term edible greens?
I started my cheap setup by buying things from Aliexpress it's compact, can be grown in the window and apart from changing the water once every 2/3 weeks quite mess free.

This upload reminds me of another favourite RUclipsr of mine - Chyrosran22
Everything from the subject matter, soothing voice, glorious accent and old-style video production technique are similar.

I'm particularly fond of his sustained scorn for non-metric measurements. I mean, I use Imperial myself now and then, but it's funny how he handles it.

@@AtomicShrimp Hah, that is indeed the best part!
A question related to the video - does this macro pad support automating pressing multiple keys in succession? (e. g. you press a single key and it sends "M" "R" in succession)
I am considering this device, but some shortcuts in the programs I use work like that

    • @AtomicShrimp
      @AtomicShrimp  2 года назад +1

Yes - I'm sure that's covered under the macros function - you can have it output any arbitrary text on a single keypress
