Baron Jean Michel de Selys Longchamps was on a mission with his Wingman Sergeant Andre Blanco. The Baron was a Belgian aristocrat. When the mission was done, he sent his wingman home to continue on a personal mission alone. The Baron had heard that the Gestapo had captured and ended the life of his father...and now he was out for revenge. His plan was exceptionally daring. He was to fly over the rooftops of occupied Brussels and shoot the Gestapo building with his Hawker Typhoon. This was a personal vendetta unsanctioned by the Royal Airforce. A brave action that was to lift the spirits of the citizens of occupied Belgium and strike fear into the German oppressors.

He not only got his revenge and disrupted enemy operations; he gave hope to his people that one day they would be free again.
Giving hope to a conquered people is more valuable than killing 4 German generals. Incredible flying skills with Incredible bravery.
@@joeverna5459 at least 4, but I doubt it was just 4.
Hope can be the best weapon people can have. It allows for smarter decisions, perseverance, etc. Even if 3 people have RPGs, if they have no hope, they are much less likely to succeed. Someone with only a pistol can be giga chad because they have hope, despite being out gunned and out numbered.

Because those who let their guard down and had hope for survival.

The africans that Belgium massacred: yeet
The absolute dread and deafening scream that a typhoon would instill in any knowledgeable gestapo officer if they identified it, plus the sight of it slowly leveling off into a perfect strafing run would be just stunning. Always great videos from the Yarnhub team.
I always thought: "Why did they remain at the window?"
Then I remembered that the whole thing should have taken less than half a minute from his last pass by to the rounds being shot, and out of these, one would need about 20 seconds to get out of the building.
So the nazi scum was dead the moment they decided to investigate what was making all that noise instead of running for their worthless lives.
Sadly, there were some civilians (germans and belgians) on the building, even if very few. But if anything, the nazi were never entitled to recruit people to aid in their sick activities, hence any civilian killed in the responsible and calculated pursuit of neutralizing nazi officials is something the bastards themselves are to be held accountable for.
That's the moment you realize you're about to die, and deep down you know you deserve it.

A round of applause for Yarnhub!
With a resounding yes. Someone get yarnhub a much deserved honer. The story was well told. Much respect is here. Well done yarnhub.
Flying past the building to draw the Gestapo to the windows, and THEN lighting up the building with cannon fire was a brilliant move!
Too bad he didn't have rockets-!
Oh crap I just realized that! Using the noise as a distraction!
@@ltcarlsen2152 nah not as a distraction, as a means of drawing attention. He wanted the officers at the windows rather than deeper in the building as they likely were initially so that he would be more likely to kill them.
Not just that, but also checking out if it was really used by gestapo or a civilian building.

I didn't know about this event such a brave man to show his love for his country. No wonder you are so proud.
I am NOT a Belgian, and it STILL sent shivers through my spine
Yarnhub's graphics are so realistic man 🔥🔥
5:43 goosebumps 😱
Sarcasm?
Let's go Belgium! May his patriotic, Belgian blood be forever among us and forever be respected by your fellow countryman. 🇧🇪❤️
imagine the feelings of the father. Like your son tought you are dead and he avenges you by litting up an entire building of gestapo officers.
Proudest dad on the planet. It's just such a shame that the man didn't survive the war!
So sad that Jean was killed 8 months after this wonderful solo sortie. He was obviously chock full of courage.
Word is after they widened the fuselage of his Typhoon (to properly accommodate the man's enormous balls) the plane wasn't as good in flight...very sad.
I restored the entrance door of this building when i worked in Brussels in 2017. And every day i passed by his statue on Winston Churchill Avenue. We Belgian are little rebels. It's terrible that he died. But freedom has a high price that sadly no one remembers. But thanks to you keep up the good work! The past is our present and our present build the future, we have to know our history if we want to advance and evolve!
Seeing how good you guys do work like this, the movie was SABATON is gonna be so good. I really can’t give you guys enough praise for the amazing animation, storytelling and historical authenticity of your show. Amazing work Yarnhub!
What a legacy he left behind! A true patriot to remind the citizens what country they lived in and who they are. The flag was a excellent touch. He reminded them that it was still their country and the only way to get it back was to fight for their home. Damn, this guy was a true inspiration.
The Typhoon was a crazy hard fighter to fly and filled with tons of issues. You had to not only be a insanely good pilot to fly one but also insane.
But his op played to all the Typhoon's strengths - speed at low level and big payload.
Brilliant animations. They keep getting better every video. Fantastic work.
The fact that he did not survive to meet with his father after the war almost made me tear up :'(
He raised an awesome son.
Such a heartwarming story. Only wrinkle was the fact he didn't survive the war. But excellent animation & superb storytelling nonetheless!
Near the end when his CO is dressing him down, he has the most perfect "I apologize for nothing" look ever.
There were so many REAL heroes in those dark days. Another amazing video! Well done Yarnhub!
Thank you for the support!
That was beautiful. Not only did he rip the gestapo a new one, but he also rallied the Belgians to stand up against those tyrants.
"Hello! My name is Jean Michel Longchamps! You killed my father! Prepare to die!"
First chuckle I have had for a long time. Thanks
The “good job man” killed me lol
As a Belgian, I have never heard of this story before. Thank you for sharing this. That Baron, what a man.
Respect to this man! Too bad he didn’t get to live to see the end of the war. Or find out that his father was alive.
Seems like the kind of pilot superiors hate, patriots love, and enemies fear. In short, a good man
You want aggressive, sometimes that strays into "loose cannon" country.
Good summary
As usual, amazing story. I know this story but the way you render these stories in this channel is second to none. Keep the amazing work!
I swear, the videos are like getting to watch a movie, the animations, the camera angles, everything. I finish watching the video learning more than what my history teacher teaches me (but to be fair he usually gets really off topic but still) thank you for these videos!
These animations are like small budget movies and seem even more realistic than the CGI that marvel has used in its latest films. Thank you for this.
One of the things my grandfather left to me was his book, Le Livre d’Or de La Resistance Belge, or The Golden Book of The Belgian Resistance, of which he had been a member of during the war. The baron’s story is in the book and I read it as a child. An amazing feat.
6:22 hope he took out lots of Gestapo.😊
Credits to all the brave Belgians in history! People always look at the brits, soviets, americans, and germans, but we don't hear enough about the stories of Belgian bravery in the World Wars. Good day to all of you here, and may your country never see war again.
Three is enough, but if we need a fourth, we're ready.
Given the unbelievable incompetence the Belgian government exhibited in the first days of WW2 I am not surprised people forgot about them... Belgians...
@@theotherohlourdespadua1131 Eh, people just forgot us in history. Nobody know that without us, the German would have won WW1. The story of the Soldier King. Nobody know for the Chasseur Ardennais, that gave another opportunity to the French Army (we got the plan of invasion, the French just not believe us).

When I read the title of the video, it got my attention. Coincidentally, this happened on the same day that I was born which made me wide-eyed because I never heard of this event until now. This man had a goal, and he was determined to get his revenge whether if got in an honor or in trouble. Either way, he was prepared for the consequences. Thank you for sharing this video.
The two 15 second unskippable ads before the video started was very worth it.

Great video, btw!
i don't know if this info is written somewhere else as a fact of war,
but a french historian/youtube creator "l'odieux connard" told this story at a convention and added
"After the incident, the gestapo had to replace the building AA defense because it was wreck in the attack. And they had to increase the security + create a secure perimeter around the building because half of Brussel was happily passing by to trash talking them about their defeat by a single aircraft."
Shame he didn't make it through the war.... Good man. 🤙
Makes you feel proud to be Belgian, despite not being a Belgian.
Another of my ancestors earned the soubriquet of being the original tire-dents of Waterloo. Beware!
I am a belgian, and i love this vid, little countries like belgium are mostly ignored if people talk about WW2
@@victory9161 Not by me, I'm the mind behind the Watermael takeover ten years back and a descendant of Louis Nestor Guiot, who won the Chevalier de l'Ordre de Léopold with Oak Leaves, twice, at the First Battle of the Yser in 1914. It bought the time needed to blow the sluices at Nieupoprt, and if he hadn't succeeded, French would be a dead language by now. He's remembered most as the Mayor of Oostende who got seaside tourism started in a big way in the interwar years.

Bien que je sois un spécialiste de la seconde guerre mondiale et spécialement de l'aviation, je ne connaissais pas cette histoire. Beau travail, audacieux et avec un peu de chance, car il n'a pas été intercepté par la chasse allemande.
I love this story. I didn't know that the Baron's father was actually alive, though. Wikipedia didn't mention that.
This was one of the best videos of yarnhub, it's so cenamatic.
Man, the way they animate his officer was hilarious. Definitely a roller coaster of emotions right there.

A few small corrections to the comment: the RAF always forbade de Sélys-Longchamps to carry out this mission, because a member of the resistance had infiltrated the Gestapo personnel. This man was killed during the attack and the Gestapo found on his body a list of a resistance network in Belgium. Most of the people on this list were arrested and killed... On his return, de Sélys-Longchamp was blamed for his disobedience, and demoted, despite the medal he subsequently received. And didn't die in combat, but while landing, when the fuselage of his Typhoon broke in two.
Well done! I would love to see a "remake" in the Twilight Zone with myself and the Great Baron flying a pair of F4 Phantoms into Brussles to make those jackwads wearing skull hats into fertilizer. Thanks A LOT Yarnhub for setting this act of bravery into the spotlights ! Amazing video & storytelling ! As a Belgian myself, from Brussels, I deeply appreciate.
