What type of glass do you suggest? I went to a local glass company and he quoted me $300+ for 1/4in thick- tempered glass for 2 1/2ft x 3ft and 1ft high. I thought it was so overpriced but I guess it’s due to it being tempered? Do fish tanks have to use tempered glass?

    For those asking
    3/8”-1/4” glass can be used
Compensate your glass sizes for where they meet and also 1/8” caulk joints for a sturdy build.
Also, never run your your scraper back and forth. Always run it at one direction to remove dried silicone.

That is blue painters tape. You can cheap out and use masking tape, but you'll end up having to clean the residue up.
Painters tape is easier to work with.
You can also use ASI black silicone sealant. It is specific for aquariums.

Would the process to make the aquarium to fit be the same or will I have to do anything different?

What type my silicone sealant do i have to use for this?

@Regis Aquatics, How much glue is left between the glass when it's dry ? Edge to face on 90 degree angle if I measure from the side. I have heavy glass and I'm glueing down to a tile floor, so I'm wondering how much to expect to be left between the TILE and the EDGE OF GLASS. Could it end up being less than a millimeter if it got pressed out by the weight ? Thx for the video.

i noticed the front and back panes sit around the base, while the ends sit on it. could you please comment. thanks.

I think it's probably mostly cosmetic, front exposes more and we would better appreciate the whole pane of glass without the bottom pane expose. I think? But the other way are most likely stronger imo

Could I use 2 different pieces (same length) of glass for the bottom? Not using it for water. For hermit crabs.

Should be fine as an enclosure but I would not recommend for holding water

I always wonder if these tanks without a lid don’t have a problem with evaporation or with fish jumping out?

Those are two very real problems haha. Usually you can build a mesh lid, or not get jumpy fish

If you are place a connected glass on top portion of aquarium(from edge to edge), it will great support for load transfer to all sides.

Would it be safe to have all the side panels sitting on top of the base instead of around it?

@@christopherhogue2310 I ended up having the front and rear glass sitting flush with the base & the side panels ON TOP of the base. It’s been ~4 months and I’m happy to report there are no leaks. It was for a small 5 gallon tank.
