Mr. V. Vaidyanathan Interacts With Participants From Our Lighthouse Program | FIRST IMPACT

- Lighthouse Communities, a non-profit organization co-founded by Ganesh Natarajan, Ruchi Mathur and eminent industrialists of Pune, recruits young adults from very-low-income-families skills them to be employable in the organised sector/ join entrepreneurship. I had recently visited them and interacted with the participants. Sharing the video. The course includes
(a) Foundation course, where they are taught basic concepts like attitude to work, confidence building, one to one counselling, personality development, group discussions etc.
(b) Skilling program: English, digital skills, other vocational skills training
(c) Entrepreneurship program (Junoon),
(d) Career counselling
Each day, participants undergo two and a half hours for “foundation course”, one hour for digital skills, and one hour for English speaking skills. Then they undergo a career counselling program.
During my interactions, I asked them how many of them have a laptop or PC at home. As you can see in the video, only 6 out of 20 had one. For lack of the last mile device, they are at a huge disadvantage in the New World. So participants come here to access computers, laptops etc. and learn these skills.
I asked them what they are studying/ studied at college, and why they are here. One person had done MBA and wanted to pursue career in digital marketing. Another had done Bachelor of vocational software development, and the college had sent her here to gain English Skills. One person was studying C++, Python, Java etc. in college, but feared talking to groups of people. Regular education does not include these skills. One of them wanted to join an MNC company, another an IT company, another wants to take up a career in Finance. Many want to pursue entrepreneurship. They all aspired for an better life in organised sector, or wanted to do micro-entrepreneurship.
I then met the faculty for digital skills, English etc. who were very committed to the program. Faculty taught them how to access websites, how to apply for jobs, Microsoft Excel, how to use Google Drive, Excel, Word, setting up an email id, protocols of email etc. concepts. They learn ledger creation, Tally, using accounting software etc.
At the final stop, we met the entrepreneurs created by the Junoon Program which was a joint initiative between IDFC FIRST Bank and Lighthouse. One person educated till the 10th standard started a business to supply tiffins to IT company employees nearby, now she bills Rs. 80,000 a month and earns Rs. 24,000 net of expenses. Another lady makes masala powder and supplies B-B, another person does beautician work and earns Rs. 25000, and wants to start her own beauty business. Yet another does a graphic design business and makes Rs. 60,000 per month, another person does manufacturing for SMEs. The last person said he makes short films for corporates, I was happy to hear that he creates content for IDFC FIRST Bank following the Junoon program.
