  • In this video, I discuss some of my biggest fears about living with schizophrenia. Accepting my diagnosis has not been an easy process, and it is an ongoing one, but talking about my fears and apprehensions has helped me along with self acceptance.
There are very real concerns around what living with an illness like schizophrenia entails, and so I hope to discuss some of these fears and concerns and to shed light on them as someone living with the illness.

I failed all my classes due to Tardive Dyskinesia. I'm a music major who is striving to become a music therapist living with schizophrenia. As soon as I got on antipsychotics I noticed I couldn't play guitar or even sing because of tremors happening in my arms. It's gotten to the point where I am throwing up my medication to stop this from happening. It just feels like society would rather have you die than "hear voices". Because music therapy would be a source of income that seems beyond my reach, it literally feels like I'm grappling with death every semester. We need more research on antipsychotics so this doesn't happen to any other responsible patient with schizophrenia.

I take ginko biloba pills to prevent tardive dyskinesia. I read about it in a facebook group that talked about the shamanic implications of mental illness. I'm getting weaned off of zyprexa at the moment - and hope to be raw balling reality by 2021. I know it means I will hallucinate - I'm fine with that. We're not all meant to think like the mentally 'able bodied'. If you can handle the voices, if you can grow with them, then do what is right for you. If you can't handle it, then take the pills. I'd rather take the pills than be psychotic. But, at this point, I think I can truly handle what will come when I stop taking the antipsychotics. Blessings.

Thank you for sharing your fears and for making this video. I know that everyone’s mental illness is different but I wanted to share that my mom has schizophrenia and she and my dad raised me and my two other sisters while having it. We of course had a different childhood than most others but I can now, as an adult look back and I am so impressed at how my mom did such a good job at being a mother while having a mental illness. She did not have a mild form of the illness either. It was trying at times for all of us and still is but it’s made us all into compassionate and understanding people. A gift I would not trade. We did have many factors that helped, like having both parents and my father having a pretty good income, so we didn’t always have added stress about income or health care. Also worth mentioning is that I’m thankful my mom had us, because we, her daughters, are her added social support system. She lost all her friends when she became ill. But she raised three women who are now her best friends and help take care of her. Love her so much. Sending prayers and strength your way

Most of my friends stopped talking to me already, But one of my biggest fears is that what the voices were telling me will come true. You deserve better indeed, I do not have schizophrenia, but I did have an anxiety crisis followed by an episode of depression a few years ago, and I did constantly have the fear of losing it, and especially hurting myself, with really intrusive thoughts of jumping from anywhere high. It also involved the fear of developing a serious mental condition, and being sent to a hospital for life. Funny thing, i knew this fear was not rational, at least to me, but couldnt help it, it would still wake up in the middle of the night and be consumed by angst, this is what anxiety does, its commonly know as fear of losing control and is also linked to fear of judgment. Today, thankfully, my anxiety is more under control than even before the crisis and I can say it has been a teacher and made me a better person. Well, all this to also tell you as said in the video not to dwell too much in your fears, one time I did a meditation that said that the worst part of depression is many times fear of always having depression. Keep fighting.

Just my personal experience, but just because the voices do sometimes hit on something that end up happening doesn’t mean they have any kind of authority. First of all, even a broken clock is right twice a day. But more to the point, in my case at least, “they” are “very good” at lying with the truth, meaning they twist stuff around to make it look like it’s proof of my shit-hood, or whatever it is they’re talking about.

I have bipolar disorder (experienced psychosis before), and I have all of these fears too. Job discrimination and homelessness are a huge fear of mine, and I always feel this strange feeling of kinship and subsequent sorrow when I see a homeless person on the street who clearly has some sort of psychosis-related illness. Probably the greater fear though is losing social support and having some sort of psychotic episode when having kids. My dad has bipolar disorder and had manic episodes when I was younger and it was mostly fine but, as a woman, I sometimes wonder if due to gender roles, it affects kids differently if it comes from their mother. One of my favorite movies is The Babadook, and it really illustrates my fears of having some sort of episode that affects my kids.
Anyway, thank you for the video, it was really nice to hear someone with similar worries, and address it in a very grounded way!

    • @katatonic726
      @katatonic726 3 года назад

WARNING- POTENTIAL TRIGGER: I don't think it affects the kids more if it's their mother, i think depending on the episode itself, and how much the kids see of it will affect them. Ive had 4 friends in my life who grew up with a severely unwell schizophrenic parent (it sounds like a lot now that i think about it! I also have 2 friends diagnosed schizophrenic, so maybe we're just drawn to eachother?!). It seems as though the times where episodes had a huge negative impact were when the parent became violent, whether with themselves or others, even if it were only a perceived threat- like through violent verbalization around the child or to the child. Clearly there may've been other things going on too with the psychotic parent, like drug addiction alongside schizophrenia, but i just dont know that it was present for each (in 1 situation i know that my friend's parent had an amphetamine problem). 3 out of the 4 friends i've had with this disease in their familes had experiences with their parent threatening to kill them or other family members, one parent actively tried to kill themself in front of the child 😬 I wont get too much into that one though... but I think these untreated episode's affect on the child can be quite disturbing, whether it is the mother OR the father having it 😔 such a hard an unfair disorder, very misunderstood 😞 especially for kids, who dont fully understand things going on around them; hell it can be hard for other adults to understand- hence the unfortunate stigma 😕 I believe the key to change around mental illness & ESPECIALLY schiz disorders will be education/awareness (channels like this are so great!!!), compassion, & prioritizing health/wellness in western culture 🤔

P.S. I'm a +1 for "don't worry about your blinking" :). I think you're blinking at a normal frequency for conversation (maybe even less, because you're speaking longer sentences!). I think RUclips has just habituated us to that wide-eyed, super-energetic presentation style, plus most channels use way more quick cuts than yours (probably edits out lots of blinks and disfluencies). I prefer this style! Keep up the good word.

Not a schizophrenic, just depression but I really enjoy hearing your stories about how you handle your mental health and life as well.
Now that you have educated those of us who didn't know that the long term use of certain mental meds can cause TD: Get off her case about her blinking. If it distracts you that much then just listen and don't watch. I have watched several of her videos and have not noticed her doing any kind of excessive blinking. Prolly cause I, like most of us here, was more interested in what she had to say.
Had an aunt who was schizophrenic and from her I learned early on the amount of incorrect assumptions, stereotypes and unfounded fears people have regarding mental illness. She was always loving, funny and always loved going to visit her. I didn't understand when I was little why we would stop seeing her for extended periods until I got to see her during one of her bad times. I never felt afraid, I just felt sorry for her seeing her in that state.

When to disclose, when not to disclose will always be a big question mark for me. I believe our community just needs more awareness.

Thank you for this video, Lauren! I personally still fear having multiple psychotic episodes and losing all control in the process. But, I have long told myself that it's okay not to be productive and I have to constantly remind myself to relax because not everything will go smoothly most days. Some strangers may see me either talking to myself in public or assume quietly I'm a "danger" to society, especially while I'm doing chalk art as well. Oh, I also fear I'll end up homeless and resorting back to self harm/relapse or even loss of social supports due to my schizoaffective. So, those fears are totally justified. I'm still learning to accepting this thought disorder due to fear of judgment from those who know very little about schizoaffective disorder. But my art and writing have only kept me grounded before and after my diagnosis.

Since my husband has (high functioning) autism, I don't have a support system and can't rely on him to care for my daughter. On the positive side, she has been in therapy (we actually have the same therapist) and he has been able to help her learn coping skills which she might not have otherwise learned. She also knows that a person with mental illness is not someone to be feared.
Thank you for sharing your personal thoughts, Lauren, as I finally hear someone give voice to my own internal fears.

Thank you from my heart to yours Lauren! These videos have helped me on my personal journey with schizoaffective disorder and continue to do so! My family is better informed. And these videos have inspired me given me courage to be more open, honest, and vulnerable socially about it and it is rewarding, though a few may shy away! Most socially support me, and these fears within I also battle with, especially stigma in the general population. When I had my two episodes of psychosis, you do feel so full of fear and very raw and just confused and so paranoid that it feels like anything only bad can happen! But the good things or bad things that you feed your mind upon, OR have been taught/brought up with before psychosis I think can determine how peaceful/harmless you are or how violent some become...that raw fear that I had (or fearlessness/invincibleness for some) in psychosis is scary though, you can feel unpredictable and helpless...almost wild. Wouldn't wish this experience on anybody, but for now with me the right meds, social supports and my faith has made me come out stronger, wiser, and determined to have purpose and meaning from my sufferings. Thank you again for your priceless videos! I am happy to be a Patreon member!

Hi Lauren, I just want to say that you are doing an amazing job in describing what it's like to live with a serious mental disorder and that way you are helping tremendously both the people living with a similar illness and the "healthy" ones. Your intelligent, open and kind presentation helps people who have no friends or family with a mental illness relate and remind that there is so much more to people living with various illnesses than the diagnosis. I myself fall into the "healthy" category but you are still a great inspiration for me - as a strong, smart, successful woman. I hope that none of your fears come true and you stay balanced and happy. Take good care 😊

Just don’t ever give up on them if they struggle with it as well. Bc i know if my mom had the understanding that you do it would have been a much better easier on me to see my mom suffer and get what’s going on. Your very strong and I’m so happy for your content. I never got much understanding from my mother and i feel like you’ve provided me a lot of that. My biggest fears are letting my own future children feel unloved and unwanted like i felt as a child. Hi Lauren, I really want to thank you for taking the time to make these "Living Well with Schizophrenia" videos. I identify with some of your own experiences and the different topics you have talked about are illuminating and helpful for my own recovery process. As you have described in this video you are worried about what type of new symptoms and new side effects from medications you may have or develop in the future. These are topics that have also worried me in my recovery process since I was first diagnosed. I started my treatment with first generation medications about thirty years ago and have progressed throughout the years to better medication that nevertheless all still give me different symptomatic experiences and side effects that aprohend me. In my opinion, it is important to fulfill the eight dimensions of wellness in our lives in appropriate measure and moderation for us to have a better outcome and that always possible to accomplish. I'm very grateful to all health providers that have participated in the constant improvements on medications and treatments. Personally, I think we have been blessed with your insight. You are gifted in communication regardless of the negative aspects of our illness and your contribution in mental health literacy for our ethnicity is of great value for new medical improvements to be possible. One of my major worries for a number of decades has been how to cope with loneliness and finding a lovely woman for a successful relationship like the one you have with your husband and children in social spheres that don't have resources and solutions contemplated for the fulfillment of these related dimension of wellness in typical patient environments. I wish Heavenly Father's blessing and lot of success in your work and for your family.

I really like your videos and how you present yourself. I am newly subbed. If only more people could see this content there would be far less stigma.
I have many fears but the biggest is relapse. I have had some psychotic episodes in the past but the most recent one almost killed me.
I will never be the same again and I will always carry the scars , both physical and mental because of it.
It lasted almost a year, it was pure terror beyond words, I was not responding to any medications and doctors had all but given up.
I lost EVERYTHING and ended up back at my mums. She couldn't handle it and has since disowned me.
My brother was having to force feed me once a day and liaise with the mental health teams as I could not even string a sentence together.
Somehow it resolved and that was about 3 years ago now

I have schizophrenia and have all the same fears you do. Your not alone. And you remind me I'm not alone in these fears. And yes homelessness is a huge problem. I was homeless during my first break, and long after and it took me 6 years to get help cause I didnt know how. I was too psychotic. When I did finally get off the streets it was after a hospital stay and when they released (back to the streets) I had just enough clarity to get Myself into a shelter and start demanding help. And I got it. I also think it's the area where I live that has better social services than previous places I have lived. I've been many places in those 6 years and this was the only place i had successful help. Been off the streets for 1 year 8 months now and have been living independently for 9 months in very nice apartment. I am so thankful. Love your videos and your mission to the mental health community. And I definitely think that its stigma and pure stigma your videos are getting demonitized and I'm not ok with the message that sends to all of us, with mental illness or those without. Much love.

Another great video👍 - very open and informative. Although you were sharing your personal fears, I'm also so glad you mentioned homelessness. I feel like people have a negative view on those affected by homelessness, but don't always consider that symptoms of mental illness and the lack of a social support structure could be the cause.
Lastly, I'm absolutely flabbergasted by the stuff people will bring to your attention. I watch your videos and walk away pumped and ready to help improve the narrative around schizophrenia and mental health in general.
