  • Well, not the whole Dead obviously. But all of Los Lobos and Bob Weir, Jerry Garcia and Mickey Hart
rendering a fine version of Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land" backstage before (or between)one of their shared bill shows in July 1989. Love that Steve Berlin sax break.

This was in Foxboro I was lucky enough to be working for them. It was really an amazing day Jerry was his usual jovial self they jammed for quite awhile before they did the shoot. Great to see the clip it brought back great memories. Jerry was not only a tremendous player but a bright and loving soul. Unlike many other "superstars" he treated me and everyone else around him with kindness, man he made me laugh so hard and just loved to play on stage and off

Like Woody said it best "This land is your land, this land is our land from California to the New York Island. From the red wood forest to the Gulf Stream waters... I saw them in Philly 5 days after this performance with Hornsby opening. If I remember correctly, Los Lobos opened some shows and Hornsby opened others, seemingly at random.

The full version was also a lot better quality. The reason it got pulled is that this is a world full of jerks. Someone, almost certainly not Bob Weir or Los Lobos, objected to it being seen for free. It mattered not to whoever it was that this video would not be seen otherwise. There were some great live Van Morrison tracks on RUclips also. In this case, it was Van Morrison himself who had them pulled. This is consistent with everything I've heard about him, including from a former band member.

@cleartheroomband Actually, you have it all wrong-Woody was a patriot. Not a banner waving, flag worshiping patriot, but a true patriot. He never wrote an anti-American song. "This Land's" original title was "God Blessed America" -it was written as a response to Kate Smith's version of God Bless America, which was at the top of the charts at the time. His message was God didn't need to bless America, it was already blessed-hardly an anti-American sentiment!

"This Land Is Your Land" is one of the United States' most famous folk songs. Its lyrics were written by Woody Guthrie in 1940 based on an existing melody, in response to Irving Berlin's "God Bless America", which Guthrie considered unrealistic and complacent. Tired of hearing Kate Smith sing it on the radio, he wrote a response originally called "God Blessed America for Me". Guthrie sometimes included more overtly political verses than appear in recordings or publications."

Seeing him in a small club this was even more apparent. We're fortunate to have been around in his time, and even more so that of any band, almost all of their musical output is still available. For free, in most cases, for now, anyway.
