I've been absolutely guilty of flooding my cuticles but blame it on my bad eyes, my faulty lamp and my runny products. I'm back doing my nails, first time I got half of my nails lifting around the cuticles, I'm two weeks with the second mani and I have only 1 nail with a little lifting. 🎉 🎉
I definitely have to buy myself an Aleana hand. All my mistakes have been on family members hands...I dread when it will actually be on a client. Every day, I research and research to learn the yes and nos. My troubled area that erks me is the cuticle prep. I would think it would be the easiest and for me it's the hardest. Thank you for sharing this video it will help me in other areas.
@@mrsm.4011cuticle prep is not always a win for me. But for me, it’s running the bit too slow. I have to run the fine bit at AT LEAST 22 or else I’ll have to go over the same spot too many times while leads to sensitivity or accidental scrap-nicks, where it doesn’t bleed but you definitely harmed them. Also, i have to switch to medium abrasion faster instead of sticking w the fine bit. Hope my revelations help you ☺️
I invested in a magnifying light to get close to my edges without flooding them. I can also see bits of cuticle or product I missed. It's been worth every penny.
When I had issues I would prep my nails, take a picture of my nail plate,, then zoom in on the picture to see if I left anything 😅. It also works great for tiny labels 😅
Hi Anastasia! Every video of yours leaves me so grateful for your instruction. You've been such an inspiration for me! I'm at a crossroads in life right now and a huge part of me wants to get my license and give being a tech a shot but I'm scared I'm just too old to start a new career at 40. Even if I dont though being able to do my own nails and my moms and friends have become such a special time for us, and I wouldn't have gotten this far without you ❤
Hey, Stephanie! I'm 40 and I just graduated from nail tech school! There are more of us than you'd think. Out of 14 women in my class, many were in their 30s or at least late 20s. We maybe had 2 who were 20-22? If it's something you think you'd really enjoy, I say go for it! It's never too late to start doing what you love. 💜
I'm terrible at getting just the right amount of product on my own short nails. I either have too little or I accidentally end up with too much especially on the apex area. I also have to be super careful to make sure I don't miss any part of the side wall because I have a high c-curve and deep set nails. However the thing that drives me most insane is I can ALWAYS see a line where old product meets the new when doing fills on myself. I'm always far more likely to give myself a ring of fire trying to blend the product before a fill than I am trying to get the gel flush to the cuticle. I'd love to see a video on that topic.
"Blend the product before". What does that mean? I remove color (if any there) prep new growth, do the gel fill (all of the steps), and finish file smooth. I actually hand file to prep vs electric nail file. I find I'd remove too much nail if I used the electric vs hand.
@@nailsofinterest What I mean by blending the product is I try to get it thinner at the area where the old gel meets the nail plate vs at the free edge. No matter what I do you can see where the fill meets the gel that had grown out. I mostly use clear gel to do my overlay and then put air dry polish on top for colour because it's faster to change.
Yes, I've made several of those mistakes. I do my own nails only, and I find it difficult to see everything because of my aging eyes. I also end up getting impatient.
I love your videos. I just have a question about builder gel is it ok for a 15 year old to have it done? Is there any damage to the nails if they do it once ? I have seen some research about because their nails aren't fully developed yet. Sometimes it may not be a good idea. Any advice about teens getting their nails done ? Thank you
I just started getting gel overlays w:rubber base then gel polish. After 3rd mani my thumb nail got a big crack at the sidewall. My nails aren’t thin. Is this likely due to improper gel application? I’ve rarely had a cracked nail in my life.
8:01 is it bad i want to eat that?😅lol Awesome tips!!! Last one still gets me once in a while, when I do my own, I often forget to look at "the otherside" of my nails! 😅 I'm sure anyone using gel has flooded at some point too. Especially when in a hurry.😅
Hard vs soft base, does this apply with the same hand? I.e. my middle nails are quite soft and flexible without breaks, my pinky and thumbs aren't Ps: not a nail tech just doing gel polish on my own
Hard means non soak off, soft = soak off. It's a bad term that was/ is used. You are really asking do you use a more flexible gel on certain fingers right?
1:37 timestamp. Love your videos! Looking for builder gels with color like the one being stirred at 1:37 timestamp available in the U.S. Do you have suggestions? (Not polygel please).
So, I wasn't paying attention to where my index finger was a week ago and my wash machine door smashed into the cuticle and now I have a dent in the grown out nail (you can even see the outline of the latch in my nail. >.> ) Should I just wait until it grows out to put on any sort of overlay?
Most likely, you've damaged the nail matrix and you need to take care of it properly, I'd recommend keeping your nails trimmed and short while applying hydrating oils, you can put a protector on your nails, but any kind of extension/overlay will damage the nail plate more if not done right - ex nail tech
@@hitoshishinsoup8634 I definitely keep my nails short as is, but I've been keeping this one shorter just because it hurts if it goes past the hyponychium. Oil has definitely been a priority as well as keeping it clean. I'm trying not to obsess over it too much, it just looks really terrible and I wanted to know if I was doing the right thing by not putting anything on it.
@KateandBree I'm not a physician, but mine has told me nails are dead once we see them. (Like hair) So it doesn't matter too much. I've had dents grow out, lost a nail completely, and had onycholysis. Last ones, you'd not put anything on until they grow. One for the pain/ further damage you could cause, (not the actual product being an issue on top) then especially no color, as you want to really watch you don't get anything growing between nail plate and nail bed. Anastasia (aka Nlailco / Nail couture ) had done overlays and extended nails that were chemically damaged before. So....just saying.
@@nailsofinterest Honestly, I am an equestrian, I own retired off the track greyhounds (toenails that dig into feet. Ow) and I'm clumsy. I am surprised at this point that the nail matrix of some nails aren't permanently damaged considering what they've been through. I've actually never seen my nail dented like this; that's why I asked where nail techs could answer and guide me. In my experience, nail techs are better equipped and have a better understanding of fingernail issues than regular attending physicians.
I've been loving your videos for a few years now and have come to trust your knowledge and expertise @nailcou I am curious about you saying rubber base and builder gel are the same? I want to choose the best at home structural gel that promotes growth, but it's difficult to separate fact from marketing. Any suggestions here?
You could try doing only one hand at a session if you need the time. Do you cure or flash cure each as you go? Do you apply a wetting layer before the actual thicker layer?

@Nailcou on number 4, you talked about picking the right consistency, which is medium. What products have this medium consistency?

Gravity isn't real. Density is what you're looking for.
