      Why, to give it to Sony or Canon. They just had to buy the company and guess what, from what RED said, most companies have already licensed it. That is it is upon Sony for example whao has it in the 25k Burano doesn't have it in their 3-4k USD cameras.

      They don't need to b/c Nikon doesn't even use RED raw since TicoRaw is literally a completely new Raw technology. Red pretty much had no choice but to sell or go under. This is why they were going to lose that lawsuit. Right now Nikon has the most advanced Raw technology in film including Arri, Red, BlackMagic, Sony, Canon, etc.

      @@dct124 I hate to break it to you but while N-RAW is good and the Z9 is a great tool Nikon would not have got any purchase releasing a high-end challenger camera or even entry level cinema camera trading on the name Nikon. I say this as an owner and long time user of Nikon kit.
      Panasonic had a great name in video and their excellent Varicams and EVA1 struggled against ARRI and Sony. Why? Because people don't risk budgets on new things when there are established names without a serious reason and sadly for Nikon that would have been a long slog to build.
      Red gives them an established name and route into the high end and mid range.
      Nikon can now take parts of the Z9, drop it into a Cinema FF and be taken very seriously or release a high-end product tailored to large productions via RED.
      The Z mount is now probably also coming to cinema and will be viewed far more favourably.
      Lastly a cinema line in Z and PL would be viewed a lot more seriously with a RED / Nikon tie-up than with Nikon just pushing hybrid mirrorless bodies or a competitor to an FX9.
      That is why they bought RED rather than continue the coutt case. Until there was a verdict their cinema abitions would be parked

Who knows if RED will become a Hasselblad to DJI or if the will dissappear and see parts show up rebranded as Nikon features. I dont care about the mount so much as I use pl and ef mount adapters and shoot in R3D MQ and HQ. I guess I'm most curious about support but RED has already gone silent on updates to my OG Komodo so who knows. Hehe

    • @danielvilliers612
      @danielvilliers612 3 месяца назад +1

      Nikon won't dissolve RED. In one strategic move, they wiped out 15 years of Canon reputation in the video hybrid world. Nikon has been trying for a decade to get a step into the video/photo hybrid world, by releasing some first like the z6 was first FF camera with 10 bit video (external), raw etc. But never could get a staep. Now they decided to kick the door open by buying red. The very capable Z8/Z9 won't be laugh about if you can shoot internal redraw and color science. Same workflow used on some Hollywood blockbusters. So they even need for red to become even better, even if doesn't even make a profit, as this will be their flagship for their main business. Like the Honda engine in the redbull formula one car.

      @@philldixon8001 Yes, but now they get and industry standard that works on every platform and has tens of thousands of people who use it in some of the most high end production. You would have same working pipeline for example from a future $ 2500 z6 or z8 to a $ 30 000 RED raptor X, that could be put on same timeline without any notable difference. We want it or not reputation and workflow are very important in this industry. It is like all the sales of people buying the Sony FX3 because it shot the Creator Movie.

    I don't think people realize yet that Nikon has the most advanced Raw technology and it didn't come from RED. Nikon is going share TicoRaw with RED and put RED in peer competition with Arri as the top cinema brand. If you don't know what TicoRaw is, it's a good time to read up on it, vs RED raw so you know the difference. Also read up on what Canon passes off as Raw as well as the other companies.
    Nikon, Hoya and few others make the majority of the actual raw glass used by the industry. All the camera companies work together at some varying level or another.

    • @JonPais

      @@JonPais How? TicoRaw surpassed RED raw codec if you were unaware.

    • @JonPais
      @JonPais 3 месяца назад

      @@dct124 No one is aware of that but you. Tico RAW is dead since Nikon acquired RED. Nikon Z9 Tico RAW has 10 stops of dynamic range. Not suitable for cinema at all. It will never be adapted for use in feature film and episodic television. Nikon asked adobe to stop working on making N-RAW compatible with all of their products as they plan on abandoning it.

    • @dct124
      @dct124 3 месяца назад

      @@JonPais Pretty sure Nikon "paused" N-Raw with Adobe. That's what was said by the Adobe employee. Nikon has not made an official announcement yet to my knowledge, and Adobe hasn't said anything else since.
      Keep in mind TicoRaw isn't just for video, it's also for stills, high speed, high resolution, efficiency and high compression. RED supports up to 8K, TicoRaw supports ...4K - 20K.
      Mirrorless cameras, they all suffer from overheating due to form factor. I don't think they could use REDCODE Raw in a mirrorless form factor for video without melting the camera or adding a fan which would not be welcomed by photographers.
      I think this is all about Nikon having internal ProRes Raw.
      I just don't see how Nikon will keep costs down by moving to a RED 8K global shutter that wouldn't just cannibalize RED all together and keep the same mirrorless form factor. It just doesn't make sense for the seperate industries of Photography and Cinematography.
      I don't see Nikon killing off N-Raw to add REDCODE Raw without killing RED and a lot of money in the cinema market. As well as screwing with its photography side. I think Nikon bought RED so they can be the only ones with a Mirrorless Hybrid setup to add ProRes Raw internally out of Sony, and Canon on a budget hybrid setup. They keep them locked out and force them to continue using Atmos Ninja for external recordings. If they can add REDCODE raw without melting the Z9 and Z8 I'd be shocked.
      I'm assuming RED will still be RED, just under Nikon.
      I'm assuming RED will differentiate itself from Nikon by keeping a Global shutter sensor. I don't think Nikon bought RED so they could build a cinema camera.
      If anything I think what we'll get is a FX30, and FX3 competitor using Nikon ergonomics and REDCODE Raw technology. I don't think the Z9 or any other Z camera is getting REDCODE Raw (maybe externally, but not internal). That's for cinema not photography.
      I think we'll get a Z3X and Z30X using either a new 12mp Sony stacked sensor or the current 10mp BSI sensor that's in the FX3 and the 26mp APS-C BSI sensor from the FX30.

  • @danielvilliers612

    Just for context, Nikon is a 5 billion revenue company with 20 000+ employees around the world. Red is 160 millions with 220 employees. This is why RED won't die, because RED doesn't even need to do a profit today for it to continue.
    People should understand why Nikon acquired RED and why the survival of RED is very important for them. Nikon has tried for at least 5/10 years to be at the forefront of video in hybrid photo/video camera with no success. Even putting clearly, by far, the best hybrid camera on the market in the z9, then z8.
    So after years of trying, knocking the door, they slam it wide open with Red acquisition. In one step they get higher than Canon ever reached in the video/cinema world!!! So no, Nikon won't throw RED brand, they are going to do exact opposite. RED revenue are like 3 to 5% of Nikon one. 160 millions vs nearly 5 billions. So for them RED being profitable or not is not vital at all.
    But the name and recognition of RED Brand at the highest level of video (movies) is very important for them. A Nikon z8/z9 or even z6 shooting redraw is no more a joke in the video world.
    RED itself with time could beneficiate from extraordinary economies of scale with some integration of Nikon technologies, that are not sold in thousands but hundred if not millions of parts. Something like the Xspeed 7 is already running compressed 8k Raw with blistering auto focus and blank free fast EVF. This chip is now in the Nikon ZF 2000 usd camera. The next komodo could integrate 8 stop stabilization, very fast autofocus (Human, eye, Animals, bird, cars, motorcycle, Airplane) etc.
