The MACS stands for Modular Artillery Charge System.
This system actually reduces waste by allowing the warfighter to "build a charge" out of modular components whereas the old system used pre-packaged bags that became dunnage and had to be burned for disposal if unused.
The system is designed to be highly transportable on pallets and stackable. When it gets the the warfighter there are multiple handholds which can aid in moving the charges manually.

At this stage there’s definitely someone in the Russian army who’s job is to watch this guy and take notes….
If there isn't, there definitely should be.
@@castleanthrax1833 no I think most of us are happy to see an imperialistic authoritarian regime getting their butts handed to them.
Maybe, but it's whose, not who's...
Unfortunately, Lt. Conscriptavich watched this, went to his commanding officer and was then: 1, shot for watching obvious "capitalist effeminate gay-pig-dog propaganda" and/or being too competent and thus a threat to said commanding officer; 2, berated and told that Russia Stronk Manly Men have no need of such things and transfered to a penal unit whose purpose is to gather up washingmachines; and/or 3, discovered that all the artillery charges had been sold by his commanding officer to a black market fireworks manufacturer in China.
Tfw you don't think they have people that are on active duty that are literally kgb agents
Pallets. The modern war hero
Yeah, but I’m shocked they ain’t CHEP pallets, given that CHEP originated from all the pallets that the US left in Australia after WW2
that and quite a few truck drivers, lol
@@_Sami_H And the forklift operators, of course.
@@_Sami_H Who spend 9 hours at ASP while suppliers load their trucks slowly with these pallets and they aren't allowed to have phones or cigarettes and can't sleep because they are obligated to watch the load be put in LOL
Forklift certified
I worked at the ASP at a rather large training site and I still get cold sweat when I see these tubes 😂 the amount of time and effort it takes to load out an artillery unit for training was insane!
I fuckin hated going to the ASP, being one of the drivers getting told you’re going there to get ammo, you know you will be there all damn day doing nothing 90% of the time and they wouldn’t let us have phones or cigarettes. At least the gut truck would come and offer food.. if you were still in the staging area at the time it showed up😂 sorry you just triggered memories of long ass days😂

@@twowheelunicycle8603 I got to go to the ASP one time in Yuma. They needed an A driver. I had a blast, but mostly because I didn't have a job except to sit back in awe.
Got detailed to pick up ammo for my NG tank company back in June 72. Mostly a shitload of 90mm main gun rounds, .50 cal for the Ma Deuce, and .30 cal for the coax M1919s. Some 5 gallon smoke pots, a 5 gal CS smoke pot, and for some reason, 4 Atomic Blast Simulators. Bastards are 55 gallon drums full of crap to make a huge flash and mushroom cloud, and were ballbreakers for the 8 of us on ammo detail to manhandle into the back of a Duece-and-a-half. Never even got to see them get detonated. :(
My platoon sergeant decided to use the CS smoke pot in the middle of the smoke screen. Wow. I could hear the mech infantry who decided tro drop ramps and rush out in the middle of the cloud without their masks coughing and puking 1/4 mile away.
I’ve genuinely wondered why you can get the Russian ammo crates surplus super cheap but not ones for American shells. It never occurred to me that the answer was that US shells aren’t put in a wood crate like it’s still 1935.
Wood crate is more cool
NATO logistics wins wars or at least battles. Russia hasn't learned but other adversaries are more advanced in their logistics handling.
Well the shells “rounds” actually are on wooden pallets with wooden tops as well. The charges are what he is speaking about in the video.
Boxes are simple. They’re cheap. They’re plentiful. Why are people ragging on the Russians? At least they don’t rely on foreign handouts
@@Anonymous-tj8xm daaaamn dude... You got them real hard... Didn't know they can get even more roasted lol
I did not know this I thought we just used wood or plastic boxes, what an age.
The only issue with the older versions (from the 80s & 90s) was that the charges were soaked in ether to ensure proper combustion. You NEVER wanted an open flame of any kind within 50 yards of the powder charges once their transport cans were opened.
@@swaghauler8334 Dank stuff 😹
@@swaghauler8334 not that variability is an issue with the old charge systems, but the MACS allows so much variability on the gun line without needing to carry so many different types of charges. Just the Limas and hotels and you load however many you need to hit the target.

My brain read MACS as MCAS and thought of the 737 MAX
I wouldn't want to be around anything that requires a charge that large
Everyone makes a mistake every now and then. No big deal.👍
You should pin this
I was just talking to my dad about this, back when Vietnam was still on going he was being trained on artillery in Australia. Funny story, he had to order a battery of fire onto this pill box down range and there's this 1 tree that's been there for about 50 year's off to the far right as their marker. As you might have guessed he screwed up he's number and absolutely obliterated that tree with about 12 rounds of 155mm shell's 😂. You can just imagine a group of guys staring at a pillbox waiting for it to go boom and then all you see is this tree explode into a million pieces 🤣.
Wow im early. Thank you for another informative video.
Sad that makes you feel special
Chill out Noided, he didn't say "first" and actually thanked the video creator.
Great video very informative!
Apparently, Russia seems to handle most things like its world war II.
Their tactics included.
Russia still stuck in the past and after the sanctions their living standards probably be back to 80s 90s LOL
I wonder if Russian leaders have been so focused on money they haven’t realized most other countries have been evolving rapidly resourcefully and strategically.
It's like the change from glass milk bottles to plastic ones, to a squared-off ones used by Costco.
The first used metal carriers, the second used crates, and the third uses cardboard and plastic wrap.
Not the best comparison.
@@bobfg3130 Each development of milk containers have made their easier to pack and stack, faster to upload with less residual packaging waste. Seems the same for NATO artillery packaging.
I would welcome a better comparison if you have one.
I thought it was appropriate Rob. ✌️🇦🇺
@@Rob_F8F There is more to EO packaging, and MACS packaging than merely ease of stacking. Protection comes into mind, i.e. IM testing, what is the reaction of the piece of EO when heated, struck by shrapnel, bullets etc.
The Single base of the Lo charge MACS and the triple base Hi charge MACS are relatively easier to ignite.

I'm not totally sold on the storage aspect. I'm sure it's much cheaper and still quite easy to transport wood crates filled with ammo and stuff. But the newer system seems to be more resilient to being shot at or blown up. So props for that.
Reminds me of the adoption of the Jerry can during ww2. The Germans invented the most efficient fuel delivery system but we had the ability to mass produce and pivot quickly that provided a significant efficiency that helped when the war.
What is the difference between the green tubes and the tan ones?
The green tubes hold Lima charges - shorter range. The tan tubes hold hotel charges - longer range
Thanks for your work Ryan, we appreciate it 👍🏴

This looks way more high tech than the seven max cordite bags in a 105 mm howitzer I trained on in compulsory ROTC in my country years ago.

They used the same thing for those old Navy cannons where they the large powder bags inside containers but much larger for 16” guns.

Great content and very informative!
Can you provide an assessment to quantify how effective the M777s have been in the Ukraine theatre ? We hear all about the HIMARS, but not much about the M777s. How much of a contribution have they made ? Are they still a factor ?
Thanks for the great videos!
I don’t know if this has happened yet, or if it will happen given russias insane amount of artillery. but if enough of russias own artillery and counter battery radar assets are destroyed then that is where M777 batteries will shine because then they would be able to rain down steel rain in relative safety. The issue with M777 in a modern war is that they are hard to move quickly relative to how quickly a retaliatory strike can be executed after locating the M777 unit’s position.
Makes for easier resupply and crew handling. We have actually learned that supplying and crews moving heavy shells is physically exhausting.
I was part of the artillery unit the blew up a house in Michigan cause we put to much charge in howitzer. This happen in 1992.
Weird flex bro, was anybody hurt or was it empty?

I photographed some odd tubes I saw in a liberated town in Ukraine. I thought it might be the same thing but after seeing this video I doubt it.
Wait you gotta put the bullet together as your firing artillery that’s pretty cool
Man I'd be taking as many of those empty tubes as I could get away with. I can think of a thousand good uses for a container like that.

Wanna know about the M777? Ask me. I was a cannoneer on one of them. All of our guns from my unit in Cali actually went to Ukraine. We were able to see some pictures of it gettin some
Can the plastic tubes be recycled and reused?
Wooden ammo crates have the advantage of being turned into artisanal distressed look storage afterwards.

I use to transport tones of these. After they where done with the firing missions the would take the gun powder. Put it in a large pile, and light it at night just for kicks. 😮
Green bag and white bag. There is also red bag, but that is for rocket assist and nuke rounds

Excellent! I like your attitude! Very informative and straight to the point!! 😎👍
A surprising fact is the green bag charges which are the first 1 and 2. They can be used for 1,2,3,4,5. So you can use them for any range your looking for, they are very universal. With the old charges you mainly had two types the white bag and red bags, white bags were meant for charges 1,2 and 3. And the Red bags were meant for 4 and 5.
So now you can just carry the green bags to cover any range you need. And for those who are not sure what they are used for basically it's the propellant charge, meaning the gun sets those charges off to give the round the desired range you are looking for. More bags longer the range.
On average for a shot, you would likely only use two or three green bags. If we were going to use the Excalibur round you might see 4 or 5. And often times the crew would leave the Paladin if you are in a SPG, and use a extended cable to fire that thing.
13 Bravo hooah 1/15th FA Battlion
M777 dont use the Lima charges over charge 2. Youd have to go and use a Hotel charge 3 if you wanted more range/power
@@xrexkinect to be exact ya for MAC charges you are right 1 and 2 you use M231 and for 3,4 and 5 you use M231A1.
The MAC charges eliminated the 6 and 7 charges.
Dude i love this channel so much but in the beginning i thought some of the information will be classified lol
Ours were white, but that's been a long long time ago. Red toward back. we had charge 2 or 3 all the way to charge 7. ♥️
I've seen those tubes for sale in US surplus stores as cache tubes.
Hey, have you done a bit on the CAESAR, otherwise would you consider it?
The howitzer is 155mm dog, also theirs 2 types of tubes, the green ones are L charges or Low charg, and the tan ones are called H or high charge, you can shoot 1 and 2L charges at the same time and 3 H 4H and 5H at the same time, you cannot shoot 3L or 2H
It's amazing what an obscene runaway military budget can do!
Actually make a functional military for one.
Imagine what the US could do, if they didn't spend so much on their military?
Note to Americans, I'm not criticising or ridiculing your govt, just wondering.

Wow. Thanks
You rock, Ryan! ❤
This whole thing reminds me of Band of Brothers. There is a scene when easy company are rolling into Germany, on vehicles, and they are driving past nazi troops on foot and horse carriage. Webster yells at them, ““Look at you! You have horses! What were you thinking?! Say hello to Ford, and GM! You imbeciles!”
It's surprising how much of the German military might, was transported via horse and steam power. Its why they used trains so much. Steam trains.
This Guy knows Military.
Those pallets of charges look suitable for fork lifts too
I think they'd blow up anything. Hahaha. 🤔
Of course, that's the point, they come from the factory strapped to standard pallets with measurments that can be evenly multiplied by different factors to exactly fit the interior measures of a standard shipping container, a flat bed or covered train car, various sizes of civilian and NATO cargo trucks and aircraft.
In the same way, the old 155mm Swedish Bandkanon 1 had it's ammo factory loaded in what ammounted to a *silly sized* 14 round N-block clip, one clip per standardized cargo pallet, 8 pallets to a flat bed Volvo 6x6 all terrain ammo truck and 4 to a 4 wheel flat bed trailer, the truck came with a hydraulic crane capable of lifting one of those ammo pallets at max extension which deliberately covered the full length of truck+trailer.
A Bandkanon1 also had it's own crane beam on top of the magasine, allowing it to lift one clip off the pallet on the ground and into the magasine.
Two ammo trucks served a battalion of twelve Bkan1 divided into two batteries of six guns each. The ammo trucks leapfrogged eachother and so did the batteries so that one battery was always on standby and one was relocating, with the ammo trucks replenishing the ammo at half way stops.
It took around 2 minutes for a trained conscript crew to fill a Bkan from empty to full 14 rounds capacity in one lift.
For the firing battery, if required, they could do a full mag dump in 45seconds, at range of up to 25km, so fairly short, but at the other end, ~60 seconds later, there would be coming down a total of 84 155mm @46kg total weight high explosive shells in a single 45seconds long hellstorm...
The system was intended for the same role as the soviet Katushya/Grad rocket artillery, but without the smoke trails and with russians at the reciving end of the 155mm shells...

Damn I never knew about those charges TY 🤘
I want to know more bout the m777. Idk how russia does it but a couple forner military buds i got took a bit to school me on the tube charges. Safe to smoke round em, which is insane if you ever smoked round blackpowder. Love to see a video explaining why some systems use propellant than even a campfire wouldnt detonate! And oh man my 1st time seeing C4, whoa..they tossed a brick looking like bread on a open fire, charred up and buddly, no issue, stuck a dang lighting rod in it with several wires and dagum that made a crater. My question if you ever read me, and can explain, why are plastic explosives so darn poweful and pretty darn safe?
Edit: you always say you were a AT gunner and etc, so im not getting it. I get some missiles and motars have minimal arming distances and such due to rotation arming things. But what keeps c4 and various munitions/chages from cooking off? Special blends? Obvious blends cant be discussed on YT. But i always wonder how hot its gotta be to set off things. Watch a few discovery channels watching ammo being loaded into freezers and ovens, so its wierd and wild. A curiosity that kills the cat, but satisfaction brings it back?
When you pop those things open they smell so damn good inside.

Make fun of the wooden crates all you want but they also serve the duel purpose as coffins.
Archaic, as in this video with the mountain of russian shells, there were also the wooden boxes which need more then double the space as the american modular design. This can win a war. Imagine the crimea bridge is finally destroyed and russia has to transport all the ammunition with a ferry. Half the ammo for double the work.
