Totally agree! If I was a kid I would've had nightmares for weeks! I think it's the scene that the train is still running, but the IMPLICATION is that it's now full of horribly murdered people where there used to be passengers and train crew.
it’s just still under power, that’s all. Yes the crew is dead and the interior of the cab are on all fire but that doesn’t matter, as long as the underlying mechanisms and the engine/traction motors and Generators are fine , the locomotive will keep in operation.
Technically it is driving on it's own, I don't like using the word driving when it comes to trains those sizes, your basically operating the locomotive, So all you have to do is throw that throttle all the way to whatever notch to make the train drive on it's own and you got yourself a runaway
The speed its going kinda tells you that they sped up to try and get away from the tri-pods. Sadly considering the train has burns on both sides, its safe to assume this train went through a big city of tri-pods and was probably lit up several times over from all directions. And its just been going at this speed while blazing for hours now.
Creepy knowing that at some point during the movie, this train was spotted by a Tripod and ended up getting incinerated. The fact that it's still moving and that there's potentially a hundred burning corpses on board is even worse... O_o
Given the circumstances I'm certain there were way more than a hundred corpses on it. Was probably filled way over capacity to evacuate civilians when it was attacked

This scene shows that the destruction wrought by the tripods is quite literally EVERYWHERE, and no matter what they try, they are not going to be able to escape. It's after the scene at the ferry that you realise this scene is potentially foreshadowing that the tripods aren't far away. I'd personally be more than a little worried.
For the people that is wondering why the Train didn't go derailed or blow up into pieces while we can see their heat rays is capable of destroying large structures such as the highway but couldn't completely destroy a Train? That's because the Tripod has 2 type of hest rays, which is the purple heat ray and the blue heat ray. The purple heat ray is used for destroying large structures while the blue heat ray is used for vaporizing humans but has minimal damage to structures or vehicles. As seen in the first Tripod scene where a woman was vaporized by the Tripod inside her car but her car didn't blow up. So I'm assuming the Tripod that encountered the Train uses the blue heat ray to eliminate the humans inside of that Train, but couldn't careless about the Train whatsoever so they didn't destroy it completely.
+George VI Alien 1223: "Holy Shit, these things are fast!" Alien 4056: "Get the fuck out of the train, Carl." Alien 1223: "Dude, you have got to try this out!" Alien 2056: "Welp, you just earned yourself a write-up, mister."
Here is the backstory to this. The train was going to station 5, a tripod was sitting their camping and harvesting red weed (their food) the train crew said politely, may we pass? The tripod said no. The train crew kept asking until they gave up. They got into the train, rammed their tripod, which made the Martians angry because they had just freshly painted their new tripod for the invasion, so the tripod set the train on fire and pushed it along the tracks. That tripod.... Must be really upset.
You can imagine the sheer pandemonium that befell that train before it was attacked by a Tripod. Probably packed with thousands of panicking fleeing survillians, and the Tripod probably just held it's ray in place as the train drove straight through it killing everyone onboard. It just goes to show, there was no escape for anybody, car boat plane or train, the Tripods take care of it all and are uncaring and unsympathetic. They see humans like we see ants on the sidewalk or termites in someones house, and our best efforts to stop them are like a bee stining a beekeeper in a bee suit, a totally futile defense mechanism and a mild inconvenience.
If anyone asked about the train's deadmans switch. Well, the switch may have been melted and fused together into a permanent "on" position during the attack on the train. Which probably was no more the 5 or so miles away.
I never loved alien movies. But that one was kinda cool movie. Not because of aliens.Because of little thinks like this train.İt makes realy scary atmosphere.
This scene is the scariest in my opinion, the message is clear : no place is safe. I've seen many disaster movies but this one has by far the best depiction of terror.
It’s cool and chilling how the railway crossing still functions for all trains, including the burning attacked ones. Humans have abandoned the traffic control centers but the systems function and go on while humanity is hunted down... What about for example all the power plants..?
One thing this film did well was convey that the protagonists only survive by luck and coincidence. At anytime they could have gotten on a train, or stayed in their car, or not make it onto the boat. Every decision is life or death. Being at the wrong place a minute too late can doom you.
At this point everyone is so desensitized from the days of chaos and destruction that when seeing a train on fire, they are like like.... "Yeah, what else is new"
This movie is the creepiest and most bone-chilling movie about aliens invading Earth, this film shows the destruction and the struggle of survival. War of The Worlds is in my top 10 favorite science fiction films!
A accident probably happened in that train, kinda seems impossible on how the tripods would've done it while the train was still moving, because it would've tipped over. Like others in the comments,it's pretty disturbing.
It's a movie about aliens in tripod robots vaporizing humans with lasers and using their blood to feed themselves and you are here doing speculations of what happened to that train? Are you serious?
Yes, an alien invasion occurred. Entire cities are being swept aside by Tripods, military turned to dust. And coincidentally somebody lit a train on fire with a cigarette and happen to drive past the main characters of this movies. Man, what are the odds... It's more likely the tripods have several configurations of laser weapon. We see scenes where people are vaporized with very little damage to the ground and surroundings. Then we see scenes where an entire highway is blasted away like leaves on the wind and buildings shattered effortlessly. I'm guessing this one was the "fire" setting.
The only logical thing I can think of as a Locomotive Engineer is that the engineer must have survived, there are lots of hiding places in the locomotive and the locomotive is separated from the passenger cars so considering that the engine is still in tact he or she could have took cover in the engine room, the headlights are on so that also means the engine works because the prime mover (engine) is powering the HEP motor (Head End Power) which is responsible for powering everything electrical on the train so the engineer was haul assing to wherever the dispatcher had the train lined for (hopefully across the country which is possible) also if the engineer was dead the train would have stopped itself after a minute of no controls being touched, if the engineer does not touch the throttle, air brakes, horn, bell etc after 1 minute has passed an alarm will sound prompting the engineer to reset it via button if he or she does not respond the train stops itself and this system is failsafe, if electrical is compromised the engine shuts itself off and causes the train to stop too. :D
And I know the cab is engulfed in flames but hey maybe it isn't inside of the cab! Also the engineer isn't blowing the horn because maybe he wants everybody to think he's dead and not secretly getting his ass out of there :p I'm sure they wanted everybody to assume the entire train was dead and just constantly running until it derails though
Due to the EM pulse there would have been no electrical systems running on that train other than the main generator and the motors. The shielding to contain an electrical fire combined with the overvoltage protection circuitry might have protected them from the effects of the EM pulse. All the external electrics would be fried so though the diesel engines of that type do not require any electrics to run, they would have had to bypass any electrical auto shutdown systems and run it on manual. So with the engineer dead no one was there to shut it down manually, so on it goes. So I can see the plausibility which I liked. Plausible scenes in action movies are getting fewer and farther between these days.🤷♂
I might be reading too much into it, but I reckon this was a clever bit of psychological warfare on the part of the invaders. If they're smart enough to think up the tech that they have, they'd be smart enough to figure that people would be streaming out of towns and cities to try and reach some sort of safe haven so they did things like this. One to limit their channels of escape and two to send the message that there is no hope for them, they can try and escape if they want, but they'll be caught up to.
It shows just how disturbingly callous and ruthless the aliens were towards humanity. A Tripod, perhaps several, saw this completely unarmed civilian train passing by and blasted it with heat rays until everyone was dead, and then didn't even bother to wreck it, just letting it carry on without a second thought. The people inside who died a horrible death were *nothing* to them.
wait a min.. did anyone notice that the lights were still on at the front of the engine? o.O and there wasnt any fire coming from the front of the engine either... SOMEONES STILL DRIVING THE TRAIN!!! O_O
I had a dream the past two weeks where a burning train busted through two stone walls and I narrowly escaped being run over by the train (in the dream). As I pondered the dream....I knew that I saw such a burning train before....and it was in this remake of the War of the Worlds movie. Strange thing is that I had a dream of the war of the worlds (from the original movie) back in the 1990's where the Martian death ray machines were more like just 7 feet tall and were obliterating people all over the world that deserved to die and go to hell in the Great Tribulation. This War of the Worlds theme seems to be in my conscientiousness for a reason. This is a pretty creepy scene for sure
While this was a cool scene, in retrospect I have to wonder the circumstances that created it. The Martian weapons vaporized people, and destroyed buildings, so what would they have done that would have left the train intact but on fire?
Well all of the train was on fire, so it must have been caught in the outer radius of the laser, either that or it was moving too fast to be completely destroyed by the laser
I always felt like it probably collided with another vehicle (like a tanker truck) or went through an area that set on fire from the tripods. To me it makes it creepier, just how it’s so mysterious and we don’t know where it came from, why it’s on fire, and where it’s going. But yeah I had the same thoughts because the tripods lasers seemed like they were almost solid with how they could knock over an entire bridge in just seconds. A laser usually just melts something, here it tears and rips and disintegrates.
@@George12729 Bingo! The Tripod has 2 heat rays which is the green and and the blue one. The green heat ray is the heat ray that the Martians use to destroy large structures (as seen in the highway scene). Whereas the blue heat ray is used for vaporizing humans and cause minimal damage to large/small structures or vehicles (as seen in the first Tripod scene where the Tripod fires its heat ray to a woman inside a car resulting her to vaporize while causing no complete destruction to the car.
@@YukiXKohaku ah, that makes sense, thankyou. I love the little details like that and very well spotted. I've watched this film countless times and I haven't cottoned on to that.
Trains have a dead man pedal that has to been constantly pushed. If you take your foot of it, the train will stop. In this case, there really was a dead man’s foot holding it down! That was all that was left of him.
Symbolic scene. This movie tries to remind you at EVERY moment (even when it seems calm) that Tripods are everywhere and everywhere it is not safe. You won't feel confident even once! The feeling of danger follows us all the time. I love it in this movie!
The engineers and conductors on the train had decided that it was best to probably try to outrun a band of Martian attackers... That's when a few of them just stood by the railroad tracks and opened fire on the train as it passed, killing everyone aboard... That left the engines stuck in full power... Either the fire will get to the control systems or the fuel tanks and stop it via damage or explosion... Otherwise, the burning runaway will continue at high speed intil it reaches a sharp turn or curve and derail...
I love how the death rays of the first tripod litterally blows away houses from their foundations, but this very derailable train is still on it's tracks...
The reason for that is because the Tripod used a different heat ray. The scene where the first Tripod annihilate houses and even made a highway fly like it's nothing uses *green* heat ray, which I assume for destroying large structures. On the other hand, when there's large group of people the Tripod uses *blue* heatray that does minimal damage to large structures but enough to vaporize humans. So in conclusion, a Tripod uses a blue heat ray to destroy the train, but their intention is probably to eliminate the humans inside that train so they didn't use the purple heat ray.
@@levthemapperxd Was it from the Hill battle scene? Because thar's the closest thing I could find to a purple. But anyway both might have the same function (since both was used to vaporise humans) but the difference is that it was used by a different type of Tripods. The Tripods in the first scene and the Hill scene was clearly different.
This scene has stayed with me more than any other in the film. Although, the idea that every train car is burning makes me question how it happened without disabling the train.
People who thought Steven Spielberg couldn’t achieve a horror film need to revisit this movie especially since it was released 4 years after 9/11. It was a metaphor for its time.
It's the silence right after that does it for me. Knowing that the train has been going and will keep going. Idk what the symbolism is but there's just something about this entire scene.
This is the creepiest thing from this whole movie, from how fast the train comes to how fast its going and the fact that its basically an out of control train thats on fucking fire
This film is the true meaning of human annihilation and terror. It starts with a nice day as normal and all of a sudden all of those days turn into terror.Triyng to find a place to hide but theres nowhere to go as everyone around you is being vaporized in seconds not knowing what to do because soon or later you will be next.
i wonder if this was purely practical effects, digital effects or a well done mix of both. This was definitely the most jarring scene from the whole movie beyond the tripod's introduction and the battle scene afterwards.
Am I the only one who wonders how the tripod/tripods could have raked the train with their beams to that extent without derailing it? We've seen that the beams can send cars flying and smash buildings apart. Surely the force of the beams slashing through the train cars would have been enough to derail the train?
for me personally is one of the scariest scenes in movies, there is something disturbing in this burning train

It's after the scene at the ferry that you realise this scene is potentially foreshadowing that the tripods aren't far away. I'd personally be more than a little worried.
Yes, that's part of why this scene is so good. It directly foreshadows the appearance of the tripods.
This scene was so scary

In América nobody gives a shit the signals....
Wow.

This train was actually epic and creepy at the same time.
The fact the train is still coasting is a sinister indicator that a tripod is not far away.
So terrifying to think that everyone on that train is dead and you would imagine that a train passing by would have people on it
just imagine seeing a train on fire come roaring past a railroad crossing
MISS FRITTER is just miss fritter check detroit
I wonder if one of the aliens was driving it just for fun...

Well you could always escape on a motorcycle like what Vincent did and he survived
Exactly! I couldn't beleive this scene when I first saw it, Just imagine if you were actually there.
Personal Taco Trainer it would be realy scary.Your name is funny too LOL
Joshua Bonéy its gonna crash later duh..with no conductor the trains gonna derail or the tripods gonna pick it up and throw it
Joshua Bonéy what and how did this train caught on fire.😞
SAME. I never cared for the alien invasion genre. But this film was great.
So many good scenes and images in this movie, crushed under the endless boneheaded behavior of Cruise's kids.
Yup, Cruise and the two kids completely Fucked this movie...... I was rooting for the Aliens.......
you see, the train was heading to its destination when suddenly it encounters a tripod that puts it on fire
The spent fuel in the pools is the real threat
Railway crossings like that have motion detectors, so they go down for anything fast enough.
Maybe. In a lot of scenes you can see the power is still on while tripods are attacking (take for example the hudson ferry scene.).
Half of me wants to know the story behind that burning train, the other half tells me not knowing is better.
It was hit by a tripod

One thing this film did well was convey that the protagonists only survive by luck and coincidence. At anytime they could have gotten on a train, or stayed in their car, or not make it onto the boat. Every decision is life or death. Being at the wrong place a minute too late can doom you.
That train got kicked in the caboose.

This was such a creepy scene. No explanation or warning... just freaky!
As a fellow midwestern and train lover, this scared the hell out of me as a kid.
Total surprise and a hidden masterpiece. So much of this film is pure class.
Frank.mp4 the tripod has auto aim
@@sam23696 That is a very good theory.
Maybe the train was caught in the outer radius of a laser blast?
Skains457 I think the engineer is dead. Everyone aboard that train is dead and the fire has fried the deadman equipment so the train is still going.
@samanli-tw3id nice point! Still an awesome movie haha
@@MatthewBerginGarage totally agree with you!
Remember passengers, this is a no smoking vehicle. Thank you for your cooperation :)
The idea of this scene is so simple but yet so very terrifying
I might be reading too much into it, but I reckon this was a clever bit of psychological warfare on the part of the invaders. If they're smart enough to think up the tech that they have, they'd be smart enough to figure that people would be streaming out of towns and cities to try and reach some sort of safe haven so they did things like this. One to limit their channels of escape and two to send the message that there is no hope for them, they can try and escape if they want, but they'll be caught up to.
I love how after the train passes, it just leaves everyone stunned and they are forced to move on without processing what just happened

Clare The Xenomorph (X-Files theme plays)
This scene is so sad because the train was trying to help everyone get away but now its the just the train runing away as it dies slowly...
Let's getaway gone wrong. Everyone got in, train was floored to maximum and the tripod said "if I cant grab you I'll burn you instead".
@@NJSC_Railfan the heat rays can be at different powers I am pretty sure. Its that or different tripods have different heat rays.
Agreed. That was one scene from the movie that really struck me and worked brilliantly. Thanks for this.

That scene made my blood run cold, it's so disturbing but brilliant
@@YukiXKohaku the purple heat ray was for burning shit.
which was probably what they used since the train was burning
@@levthemapperxd Was it from the Hill battle scene? Because thar's the closest thing I could find to a purple. But anyway both might have the same function (since both was used to vaporise humans) but the difference is that it was used by a different type of Tripods.
Me in the crowd: "...That would have made an awesome album cover."
Someone should make a cover for an OST of this movie with that scene.
Not only is there no train horn, they got an actual train locomotive sound effect to put us in the moment.
i wonder if this was purely practical effects, digital effects or a well done mix of both. This was definitely the most jarring scene from the whole movie beyond the tripod's introduction and the battle scene afterwards.
This and The Airplane Crash both scared the wits out of me
Am I the only one who wonders how the tripod/tripods could have raked the train with their beams to that extent without derailing it? We've seen that the beams can send cars flying and smash buildings apart. Surely the force of the beams slashing through the train cars would have been enough to derail the train?
Well chances are the train got too close to the laser which set it ablaze.
there is something so disturbing and haunting in this scene, everytime I watch the movie I get chills down my spine in this scene
