God I can just picture the animated series version of this combat. The team starts out devestated. Nothing went right the last time, they all feel on edge. Another encounter like that might not just rout them but wipe them out. They head out and enter the toxic facility, careful not to disturb anything. The tension is high, uncertainty in their minds. Then the captain notices something on top of the structure, it is what they were looking for, something that will give them their next clue. Suddenly movement in the shadow, horrible creatures shriek and crawl into the light. Riscen shouts "spread out, cover me and I'll go up to get what we came for" This shakes them into high focus. Gone is the doubt, their attention is solely on the mission.
Like the professionals they are everyone moves smoothly and efficiently, two left, two right, one in the center, the captain heads up. At the same time the creeps swarm the place all over, contact is imminent. Mara takes a shot, miss. Stine fires, ricochets off a wall. Vine gets out his laser, no hit. Riscen reaches the top, he heard the gunfire, and now oversees the battle zone. His crew is buckling, the stress from last time catches up to them. They need something to turn this around. He notices the leading beast from up high. He can do this, lead them to victory. Just down one target to inspire them. Target in sight, aim, pull...
Miss. Sweat on his temple. Doubt. There are too many, they are too fast. This is like last time. Worse. Maybe he was wrong. Perhaps running woul- CRACK!!!
A single shot echoes. WROOM!! A bright green flame illuminates the area, one, no TWO creeps screams in terror and falls silent. Kathrina did it. This was what they needed, they found their determination again. A third charges her now that she is reloading. But Stine intervenes, one aimed shot in close range, and it goes down. On the other side of the combat zone Jenna notices the sudden upturn and sees a pair sneak up on the captain but can't hit herself. Mara next to her encourages her "I've had enough of running away" takes a dose of Still and settles down. One shot, one more creature eliminated. At that moment another one storms onto their walkway. Mara swivels and tries again but can not connect a second time. Inspired by her companions words, Jenna decides to stand her ground as well and blasts at the incoming beast, igniting another toxic blast, knocking it off the gantry. This is it. They can do this.
Meanwhile on the tower, Riscen is working some terminal to get the info they seek. A black claw reaches up on the platform, a true monster of a beast follows it, screams at Riscen and charges. He got careless, by shooting the leader earlier he gave up his position. But he is fast. Really fast. With trained movements he readies his rifle and unloads a bursts into the behemoth. It stops, flails and as the rifle bursts continue they finally make the creature stumble and fall off into the depth. Gone. This is it.
Down below the crew cheers up at him. Suddenly one more creep emerges from the flames that erupted a moment ago from Jennas gunfire, it's sprinting towards her. But she is determined. They already got this. They did it. She will stand her ground and take it ou- wait it's too close. Panic rises into her eyes, she fumbles her rifle, can't react in time. Mara notices all of this to late, it's moving too quickly, she leads the shot, but nothing. She is halfway through reloading her rifle as she glances up and for the first time really gets a good look at what they are fighting. How imposing these demons really are. Too tall, too many moving appendages. One of those impales Jenna, whips to the side and throws her limb body off the gantry. Maras feet won't move, the lingering effect of the drug in her system. Her hands stay still, the hunting rifle will not be reloaded. She is the prey.
Riscen sees all of this too late. He screams down, Mara needs backup. Vine springs into action, he lands a full frontal blast, but nothing. That monster is standing imposingly over Mara. Stine joins now, but even his fire has no effect, as the beast grabs onto the frozen Maras. She will die here. But there is still Kathria. Her gunfire finally does the deed. The beast is slain, Mara is save. The same can't be said for Jenna.
Maybe they all got too comfortable, maybe the confidence was ill earned. A single one of these things nearly killed two crew members. Was it a fluke that they survived this? Had they not gotten a few chance kills due to the local hazards, would more of them have felt the bite of these hideous claws? They would find out soon enough. More were on their way.
Daaaaaaamn, dude. If it ever goes to series, you’ll have to be on the writing staff!
Damn, that is epic!
I suggest to write the equipment for the characters onto small index cards and clamp them to the char sheet.
For an improved char sheet: take some cardboard from some food packaging, like a cereal box. Write a small profile onto it for the individual units and use paper clamps to add the tinyest index cards with the items on them, to the cardboard profile. That way, whenever you look at their stats, you see all the items they carry. Because items (and effects) are written on Index cards you can just remove them when spent, lost or traded. Over time you will get a whole stack of items commonly used in the game. DIY laminate them with some non yellowing clear packaging tape. As GM it is what i have been doing for a while now. Whenever i plan to hand out some items i write them on the card. When spent i collect them and "laminate" them with some packaging tape, to be handed out again when players buy/find new items.
Alternatively, for the char sheet add cardboard into a see through binder sleeve and erasable pens to mark wounds and what have you. When you have printable char sheets you can just stick them with the cardboard. The carboard gives the thing a bit more body to it and makes it easier to handle (as opposed to having it floppy around) on the gaming table.
When i go war gaming, i make individual unit cards like this, so i remember all the different abilities the units have. And since its foodpackaging cardboard... i can just throw it into the paper bin when i don't need it anymore, because it was waste from my groceries to begin with. No additional costs and just some minor arts & crafts skills needed. Doubly useful when GMing, to have such data cards for your characters, so you know at a glance what their general abilities are. And you can always add index cards with items via paper clamps and still have it all visible for you.
While the actual core combat rules are pretty simple in this game. There are a lot of edge case rules (especially with equipment) which are hard to keep track of in the heat of battle, I've used Nandeck to do cards for my characters and Enemies and AI commands. Print them on paper (to save cost) and slip them into a card sleeve which has a bit of card for stiffness.
I know this is months later, but one thing to keep in mind
36:17 The captain was being rushed by the the swarmer, this would be the perfect time to use my favorite rule...Page 46...Panic Fire. Basically the pawn does a mag dump at the rushing enemy. instead of one shot, you get 1 + 2 shots emptying your magazines. Roll all 3 shots. No matter the result, that pawn will be out of ammunition for that weapon AND any other weapon that uses the same type ammo. So if hes firing a military rifle and still has a handgun, hand cannon, etc...he will be able to switch firearms for the next turn. But if he was using a SMG/MP/Scarp pistol, there wouldnt be any other handgun ammo left. I love panic fire.
Great episode :D Thank you for sharing your talents with us! Those edits xD Famous. Last. Words.
Great game! I can't imagine how hard it is to learn a game *at the same time* as filming. Good work!
Far superior to most science fiction show. Awesome production, scintillating narrative and fantastic battle scenes. I am hooked.
"remember the stimpacks" fantastic piece of foreshadowing. Great episode!
Great show, I love the miniature theater intro and your enthusiasm throughout the game.
"Lieutenant, what do those pulse rifles fire?"
"Standard 10mm light armor piercing round. Why?"
That spaceship is exactly like the Tarsus from Wing Commander Privateer! that's some great memories :)
You have a real gift for doing this. I've enjoyed a lot of Five Parsecs Campaigns on RUclips but your content is top notch. love it!
legally distinct glare sword
I was kinda skeptical of this when it began, but this is turning out to be freakin awesome!
Fun episode. I wonder if (Spoilers for episode)
The reason the heroes went to this chemical factory was because the loot cache was supposed to be there, however the Vendetta crew found out about the alien invasion and so moved their loot cache off recently, leaving a clue behind for the heroes to follow to wherever they moved it?
Oh no, what if the vendetta crew are somehow responsible for the invasion?! Maybe their loot was stolen alien insect eggs or pheromones, that lured them to this planet?
10 minutes in and “FAMOUS LAST WORDS” has already flashed twice 😢😅
Wish I could give 💯likes to that intro! 😂
Yep I thought the graphics were good too
This is the best campaign so far. I may have to check out 5 parsecs for myself.
Your narrative is fantastic. It sets the right mood.
Excellent episode! I can't get enough of this 5P series! Although I also feel that way about each of the other seasons. You're an unstoppable force, Trevor!
I really love this series. The editing of "FAMOUS LAST WORDS" had me cracking up.
Lots of fun! Love this game. This scenario really highlights the strong points of 5 Leagues though. Fighting melee enemies in Parsecs is often way to easy because you can kill them before they get to you with moderate tactics. Leagues requires melee combat for most damage so it’s much more dramatic.
You can use a story point to reroll the injury table to save Jenna. Just a tip for you.
Thanks for this game.
I need a mug or a shirt with the immortal words of Trevor @32:20 "OoOoOo Kay... this sucks"
Great episode! And considering that the casualty chart specifically mentions if a character's equipment is lost or damaged or not, you SHOULD keep those items.
Loving this campaign!! Amazing terrain. Maybe a little dice tray will help to keep the dice rolls on camera
Yooo, kudos for sticking with the results of the missed rule on brawling. Lesser individuals such as myself would have at least given myself a re-roll on the injury table, but you took the death of the Brooklyner like a champ.
Loving this series. I love the intro cinematics. It's a cool change of setting from all of the Simon and Friends adventures AND a change of style from any of the previous solo-games you've played so far on your channel. And in addition to all of that, you are just a phenomenal performer and brilliant story-teller!
It's not a 5P system game without some pain 😅. Good episode.
Simply superlative fun, as always Trevor :-)
Awesome video as always Trevor. What terrain packs did you use to create the chemical factory - it looks great!
I second this! What terrain was used because it looks amazing!
Tinkerhouse Terrain
Post battle commentary is brilliant.
I just Love His Jokes.
OK, great game! 2 words though, Story Points, you could have re-rolled Jenna's injury or as per page 67, used a stars of the game to keep her on the crew. But then again if you got the brawl sequence correct they might not have been taken out...at times it really is hard to keep track of everything especially when you are filming, I have enough trouble with out filming..lol
This series continues to be really cool! 😃
Truly a fun time to watch you play. The narrative is always engaging and your character voices are the best. Don't sweat the forgotten stuff. That all comes with play experience but there are a few really neat ideas in these comments on how to remind yourself and manage all the sub-effects.
Oh Jenna, just brutal what she went through
The aliens heard her speak and did not like it!
If this was one of the main series it would've been cool to see her return with a mecha arm at some point, but I doubt that will happen here. Really like today's set, the chemical plant helped the team a lot, could've gone wayyy worse. Honestly I don't mind the mistakes here and there - it both makes it feel more homely, cause we all mess up here and there, and also feels more realistic. In a battle even the best fumble their tactics, they're bound to waste opportunities. Thank you so much for another great episode Trevor!
Just brutal! I didn't see if you rolled after the enemy died . Did you forget or could they not be disheartened? Looking forward to the next one.
Great job Trevor!
You know, Trevor, I have to blame you for my obsession with Ironsworn, (just taken delivery of Starforged) and now I'm itching to play this...
Problem is I need the terrain, and minis and... Oh alright then! 🤣
Love your content, and thank you for just being a positive experience all round.
(My wallet hates you though. It's weeping in the corner.)
Another great episode. Part of me kind of hopes the crew doesn't escape the planet in time and you have to fight an invasion force. An invasion battle against brood swarm would be an epic episode. It would also be really nasty though. Excited for the next episode either way. 😁
Thank you very much for the wonderful performance, master Devell.
Dude that was dope.. ready for more
Absolutely amazing!
I roll a shirt 👕 button with the dice, and the button would remind me that I have a story point that I could use if need be
This is my favorite episode so far! You table is beautiful. Where is the terrain from?
I really value the post-production bits. It helps me understand the game better (mistakes help us grow!).
Thanks for your content!
Just bought Five Parsecs From Home thanks to watching your playthrough. Decided to play in a VTT using digital minis made in Hero Forge. It's been a lot of fun!
Awesome game report as usual!
The campaign is really starting to heat up and I can't wait to see the next episode!
Poor Jenna, but maybe she can still make it big in politics, who knows. It would be fun if she returned as a Patron NPC.
About the series so far, I don't know if this counts as Season 4 or more like a side-thing before we return to Simon and our other heroes, but either way I'm enjoying the sci-fi stuff a lot! I was always taken aback by miniature games, but the way you present it makes it look a lot of fun and much more dynamic than I imagined.
Remember the Stim Packs!!! Lol
New animated OVA with full Trevor Devall voice cast when?
So much fun!
This seriously makes my day.
HAPPY FEELS!!!
Another excellent episode, Trevor... really enjoying this, mate
A tactic you should have considered for the characters acting in the Quick Actions phase is Snap Fire (pg 113), rather than moving and shooting in that phase they can remain still and basically go into overwatch allowing you to shoot in the enemy phase as they move between cover. If you don't use it you still get to act in the slow phase.
Another tactic you might have missed in the rules is Panic Fire (page 47), you are limited to half the weapons range, but you empty the magazine into the enemy rolling 2 additional shots. However after that the weapon can't be used for the rest of the battle. If you have a back up like a pistol or blade it is probably worth doing before the Swarm Brood get into Brawling range.
Technically consumables like Still and Stim-packs are assigned like equipment so you know which characters are carrying them. Makes sense the sniper would have the Still though, but maybe they didn't have the stim-packs.
Personally I think having Swarm Broods, dash into Brawls, and be able to move the 2" into a brawl, makes they suitably scary and offsets the fact they have no range ability. I'd consider it a house rule rather than a mistake...
It is worth spending a story point before rolling on the injury table, to roll twice and pick the best one.
I was aware of all of these rules you mention (note that for the consumables, the rules say you do *not* have to assign them to specific characters). They didn’t seem appropriate or necessary in the moment. I’m sure eventually they will.
As for the Swarm Brood dashing into combat, I never house rule a game until I’ve played it thoroughly. Want to make sure I understand the designer’s intentions before I go changing things :)
Ah, thanks I wasn't aware of the rule on consumables as it doesn't mention in, the assign equipment bit. The rules are a bit all over the place.
When I faced the Swarm Brood I also thought they would be scary, but I've found Brawl only enemies are at a real disadvantage. While most stunned enemies can select been either moving or shooting. A stunned brawl character cannot enter Brawl in the rules as written.
This makes them not very challenging I've found as to get into Brawl they will almost certainly break cover at some point. Which likely leads to them being hit, and at the least stunned. Then they can't attack.
Since your opponent in Brawl gets +1 per stunned counter, I've been letting enemies enter brawl even if stunned as that seems enough of a penalty and keeps them a threat.
Anyway pleasure to watch your delivery as always. Looking forward to seeing them get to a new planet.
I hear you. Your brawl house rule would probably work well, and I may consider implementing it in the future. The Swarm Brood really only shine when 2 of them can get to a character and attack together (they have the special rule where they do brawl attacks at the end of the enemy phase, meaning if they get to you they will always get the gang up bonus), but as you indicate, they can get picked off long before they get close (as happened in my own case).
I wonder if a good rule would be to let them dash into a brawl? That in conjunction with their special gang up rule would make them more of the threat they seem to be intended as…
I’ve just finished watching and loved the episode. I thought the same thing as @ntlbagpuss, watching how you handled the brood. It definitely made them more threatening. But more importantly, it made the combat cinematic, as it took down one character, then leapt onto the next one! I think I’ll be adapting this as a house rule going forward.
Lol, this came up in the auto play after watching this.
I'm going to just let it happen and watch it again. To funny
Great episode loving this so far..... where is the terrain from you are using here...Battlesystems ? doesn't look like the sets I find online ?
This is from Tinkerturf terrain.
This show is amazing as always. Can't wait to see the next video!
WRT the last alien, after giving Mara the "quick die", she should have deferred, then shot at the alien in the open at < 6" when it charged, using Snap Fire (see P. 113). Also, could have burned a Story Point to re-roll the Invasion roll (I might not have done that) or Jenna's Injury roll (definitely would have done that).
Laughing hard at your edits! Maybe put some tokens or index cards by the battle map to remind you of consumables?
Trevor, don't shame these aliens for their multi limbed bodies, you yourself have a multi limbed body xD
Hah! True enough 🤪
My old man’s a dustman
Another great episode, Trevor, thank you. Keep 'em coming!
Re story points, stillpacks, etc..., maybe keep an index card on the table, as a reminder of them? 🙂
Several people have had this idea, but I don't have a whole lot of room on the table for such things! I'm just going to have to beat the rules into my head ;)
@@MeMyselfandDieRPG I roll a shirt 👕 button with the dice, and the button would remind me that I have a story point that I could use if need be
These are so good!! Now if you do this with 5 Leagues from the Borderlands I'll sign up to your Patreon!!
Jenna must come back with a robot arm 😭
I will not watch with out... and must have a combat bonus to hit
Another great video.... this series made me buy the book... where is the terrain from?
He talked about the terrain on a video, idk which one.
Tinkerhouse terrain
I swear, Trevor is going to find a way to add Simon, Arn or Edvard into this story, in some way.
Another great video.
I believe no one could (or would) trademark the "bhuzzzuuhhzzzhhuzzzz" or "zwswizzss" 😂
I laughed 😂
Hi Trevor - really enjoying this series. What are you using for the cardboard props for inside the ship in the opening scenes? It looks really nice!
Steindash sounds like the name of a fantastic beer
Hi Trevor, I love the show and your energy always keeps me hooked through every episode!
I've been looking at all the different systems for all the different series you've done and I'm particularly interested in this one, but I don't have any terrain pieces and only a handful of D&D minis. Is there anything you could recommend I use instead of buying terrain to create the environment?
I’ve literally seen people use Lego and toilet paper rolls.
Years before this, I never used minis for our games - just stickered bingo chips with the characters names on them, and an arrow showing facing. We would draw complex battle maps on a Chessex mat with colored water soluble markers. Worked great for us!
@@MeMyselfandDieRPG I may have to get my little one to lend me some Lego then! Thank you for the advice and your fantastic episodes :)
If you have D&D minis, there’s also Five Leagues from the Borderlands which is the fantasy equivalent of Five Parsecs. You can also use Lego mini figs for units. As Trevor says, you can start playing with very little, then add more as you go. If you really want to pick up minis, then Warlord do some great value packs that give you 10 figures with lots of customisation options. They are intended for Stargrave but are fully compatible with 5P.
Dude this is awesome..New sub here..👍
Is this show on Christmas break? It has been more than 2 weeks 😆 🤞
Anyway, Merry Christmas! 🎄🤗
Dude that was awesome am in the middle of putting together this game need some steelgeaners lol and am good to go thanx for introducing me to this game
First impressions, a few seconds in: love the Core Space terrain, but… edging! :)
What does that mean?
@@MeMyselfandDieRPG Grab a bunch of different coloured Sharpie permanent markers, and use them on the exposed cardboard edges of the terrain pieces, matching the colours as best you can. They look great before this is done, but they look even better once you do this. It’s like looking at a miniature that is well painted with just a base coat, then seeing it after highlighting and shading have been added. Both look good, but the latter looks so much better…
Try it on a small piece, like the triangular table, using silver and blue. You will notice the difference.
Cheers,
Oh, you’re talking about the Battle Systems material. Yeah, I’ve seen their creators doing the same think.
That terrain reminds me of the original Necromunda set. Anything repurposed from there?
Nope. It’s from Tinkerhouse Terrain.
@@MeMyselfandDieRPG Cool - it looks great!
I may have missed it, but is the terrain from Tinker Turf (thats what it looks like), Battlesystems or something else?
Tinker Turf :)
I tried the system, pair of battles some weeks ago, when i saw what the fourth season was gonna be... And man, it's hard to remember that you have those items to use.
My guess is that you focus in the battle so oneself suffer from vision tunnel effect. xD.
Oh man, I was terrified at the start with those gigantic monsters bearing down but it turns out they were the perfect enemy to fight in a Toxic Environment, since no bullets were flying back at us! I think since Jenna's from a wealthy family and had her local govt Patron here, after her rather severe injuries rather than spend forever in sickbay on the ship, she's told the Captain she's decided to leave his vengeance quest, go to the hospital and help defend Putnik and her friends from the real threat the Swarm.
Do you know when you'll introduce the Round 2 and 4 Battle Events?
I think next episode I’ll introduce either Battle Events or the Enemy Deployment Variables from the Trailblazer’s Toolkit.
Glare sword was the wrong choice. Brawling tends to be quite uncommon in 5P battles (in your two previous missions you've had precisely one brawl; even in this engagement, against enemies which can only brawl, you only had a single brawl - and even then it only occurred because you misapplied the rules). The overwhelming majority of combat in 5P is ranged, and the Auto-rifle (with its two focused shots) would effectively have been like adding not one but two additional long-ranged weapons to your inventory. Firepower is everything!
Dunno about you, but I think taking a loss early on, especially a hard one, shows whether or not a group can gel together.
Whether by just bad luck, or overconfidence, and just plain being greedy, knowing your crew can not stab each other in the back over a loss, especially when they still get paid regardless is a good sign of cohesion in the right direction.
I get this is solo, but I do think that applies to group games too. When a hard loss comes late, folks often get stuck in their ways and try to quickly toss out makeshift ideas, instead of building off the concept, one plan, victory does make, no matter how tried and true it be.
I see alot of GM's afraid to hit their players hard with a loss, teaching them; running? Always an option. Learning what someone is good and bad at? Make use of it.
Nevermind the fact, the guy the stays in melee majority of the time doesn't even have a basic ranged weapon for when he can't reach, say a flying enemy...
Love the accents :)
NO idea, why i keep thinking Xcom XD
Great production values this time around whti this capmpain
Was you battling Denim snatchers?! 😉
What kind of laser pointer is that? Thanks!
For folks asking I think the terrain is from Battle Systems core space range
Not this time. It’s actually Tinkerhouse Terrain.
@@MeMyselfandDieRPG Doh! Should have known flipping a coin was going to mess me about. Thanks and great vid!
Yay! Genestealers, I was hoping for Tyranids.
What terrain was used for this battle report, the other terrain was Battle Systems but I don't recognise this terrain.
Where is that lovely terrain from?
What if... That the new quest is on the Swarm's home world. That might be why they are invading.
What, are you trying to get the whole crew killed?!? The game not deadly enough for ya??
;)
Hi there,
Thanks for doing 5PFH. Love this game, have it, and have a crew.
Sending this message to get info on the spaceship model. Believe it is a Tarsus from Wing Commander.
Please tell me how or where to get one. I hope you didn't print it I suck with tech and have no printer.
Subscribed to your channel. Just found your channel yesterday. You do an amazing job with this game.
Thanks.
Anyone know or think Trevor will ever play Five Leagues from the Borderlands?
Katria has been pretty effective for just being some rando they picked up in the market.
Where is the cardboard terrain from?
He talked about the terrain on a video, idk which one.
I think its from a company called BattleSystems out of the UK.
It’s TinkerTurf Terrain!
@@goblynknight45 Battlesystems is similar, this is a US company TinkerTurf as Chris pointed out. It is made of "2mm sturdy black-core board". Being in the UK I think I will stick with BattleSystems, you also seem to get more terrain for the money.
I was thinking that this game was far more forgiving to a loss then Ironsworn, then a single enemy took down two fighters in one move and permanently removed one, and I thought, hmmm, ok, maybe not.
One thing I do if I screw up a rule that ends up getting a pc killed or permanently injured, is I modify the consequences to be less dire, aiming more for balance. I do the same if I screw up a rule in favor a player - like if that means they level up, then they don't level up right now, but they can automatically next chance, etc.
You are far more forgiving than I 😈
Hi there love this show me and my bro are currently over complicating 5pfh by all means we can.and love it and are starting to invest in battle systems however I want the set u have used here with the tower grave lifts and ladder lifts from the latest episode but can't find them to buy any were including battle systems website please help am I missing somthing
tinkerhousegames.com
Wow this is a class site thanx a bunch
I’ve slept on this and wonder whether the PCs would have been better off waiting for the aliens to come to them. The longer they had to pick them off the better. Also in a group they could support each other. By running forward they got isolated and shortened the distance between the foes. What do you think??
I think the battle has already been fought ;)
@@MeMyselfandDieRPG too true but I like to learn from your experience 🤣🤣
From my mistakes, you mean 😜
@@MeMyselfandDieRPG well yes but I’m far too English to be so impolite 😀
The miniature in red with 2 pistols what brand is that mini?
Dunno. A viewer sent me a bunch of minis.
For myself the missed attributes and rules fuckups have produced a far more believable storline! This is a new crew as in all great films there are teethin' troubles. Who knows knowing Trev I suspect the lost character will return. Barbara Gordon anyone?
Would like to see you play skyrim and making your story 👌
