Matthew Perry and Julia Roberts dated for a few months after they met filming this. In his memoir he said he broke up with her because he felt like he was "unlovable" and "could never be enough", which is really sad.
Julia Roberts's sister, Lisa Roberts Gillan, plays the other production assistant who is also Joey's date. And show creators Kevin Bright, David Crane and Marta Kauffman also act as director/film crew.
The one with the prom video is one of best episodes of the series. Rachel walking up to Ross and kissing him was so romantic and sweet.
But, unfortunately, the lobster theory is not true. Lobsters, by nature, are not monogamous and do not pair for life. A dominant male will actually mate with multiple females during encounters that last days to weeks.
Also, when Courteney Cox wore her fat suit for the first time Matthew Perry walked by her without knowing who she was.

i think that what the video shows Rachel isn't just that Ross cares, but that he cares so much that he has been hurt by these "near misses" as much as her. It goes back to what she said to him at the coffee place, that both past situations of him liking her and her liking him ended up with her being the one hurt, cause that's all she's seen so far. That's all she's been told so far. Cause Ross never actually tells her fully how he feels, she doesn't know how Ross has also been hurting, wanting the best for her and to also be with her while seeing her go out with other guys. I think that before the video Rachel thought that she cared more for Ross than he truly cared for her (still thinking of the list, mostly), and so she refused him thinking "what's the point? i'm the one risking something here. i'm the one who's gonna be hurt in the end. again"- that's why the video changes things so much for her. It makes her less afraid to love him knowing that he loves her just as much

Yes, thank you for saying that! I also think that it's beautiful that Ross does really deeply kind things and doesn't advertise it. If they hadn't seen the video then no one would have ever known. It gives his character so much depth. and makes me think that there must be more kind things that he's done that no one even realizes.

Mr. Gellar (Ross and Monica's dad) is so hilariously iconic. I know he's not the focus of these episodes but I would always be so excited to see him on screen because I just knew he would have a hilarious line! 😂

i feel like Rachel and Monica weren't fighting so much about Van Damme but about the "betrayals": Monica is mad that Rachel went out with him in the first place, then Rachel gets mad that Monica not only wants her to dump him but actually wants her to "give him over" and set Monica on a date with him (i think you can actually see Rachel going from pissy to royally pissed when Monica says this), and then it just escalates from there lmao

I thought Rachel was right. Monica would not have asked him out anyway, he wasn’t interested in her. Rachel also asked permission and he was a celebrity and not some crush of Monica’s from work. Now at least Monica did get to talk with him

If I remember correctly, this is the most watched Friends episode of all time. Julia Roberts and Matthew Perry also had a thing irl. Julia Roberts agreed to have a cameo only if she will be in a Chandler storyline.
I wouldn´t be surprised if this was the most watched episode. Julia was probably the biggest female star in Hollywood and Van Damme was also n his prime. That´s a lot of star power
People tend to judge Ross harshly, but I don't think that he's ever been malicious, and it's so important to recognize the difference. He just makes stupid decisions and has a lot of emotions, but he doesn't have ill-intent ever...even the list.
Mattew Perry(Chandler) actually dated Julia Roberts in real life. He also dated Yasmine Bleede (probably butchered her name) from Baywatch

So both of the writers/creators of the show, Marta Kauffman & David Crane, are Jewish. Monica & Ross's parents are basically a loving satire of the archetypal Jewish parents. A mom who's hyper critical of her daughter but dotes on her son & a well-meaning dad with zero filter.

Oh man, you said at the start that you expected something big for these. No body expected the end of this one. It's amazing how one episode, hell, on scene, can change so dramatically.
Episode 13 was The One After The Superbowl, Part 2. That's why there are two special guest stars. Julia Roberts and Jean-Claude Van Damme.

Please don't feel bad to laugh at the some of the jokes that you just know would receive uproar if said now. Friends is a product of it's time, it's not that serious. Take the joke in good humour, it's okay to think it's funny.
These are two of my favorite episodes! I soooo look forward to your reactions to FRIENDS each week! Episodes 12 & 13 was one extended episode that aired directly after the 1996 Super Bowl ... Julia Roberts & Matthew Perry were dating at the time and she agreed to appear in the episode.
Fun fact - the "it" couple was not supposed to be Ross/Rachel, originally the creators had envisioned Joey & Monica getting together but when the from the pilot and the crowds reaction to how long Ross had been in love with Rachel and in the pilot there's Rachel leaving Barry at the alter & Ross finding out that Carol is a lesbian is what made it go towards them.

They crew around the director in the scene when Joey tries to impress him using Phoebe to get his attention are actually the creators / writers of the show 😉😄I guess they just couldnt resist and thought it'd be cool to appear on camera. Im glad they did it.

Kinda puts Ross & Carol into perspective too. I can see Ross going back to college after that absolute body blow to his self esteem, getting involved with Carol & then, so desperate for a relationship, he may very well have just totally ignored a bunch of red flags that Carol was throwing up. By the way, I'm not suggesting Carol deliberately used him as a "beard" but rather (based on what we know about her parents) she was likely trying to push through what she'd convinced herself was "just a phase". Both victims of societal gender expectations.

Ive always loved "The one with the prom video", its really sweet and gets me a bit emotional. Only now after all these years its also quite sad because in a lot of ways, i am a Ross. Problem is, i never got my lobster....

I thought it was more in the lines of navigating the jokes with the reality of bullying real overweight people. There are jokes I’ve laughed at but would never tell because they’re really mean. Oscar seems like a nice person, so while Matthew Perry excels at sarcasm, the jokes are still pretty hurtful and he knows it…

@@paulcurran4786 I sort of agree and I definitely think that there are people finding offense in everything. I was thinking more in the lines of finding something funny but also realizing the cruelty behind it? While I think Perry’s delivery is great, the jokes aren’t very creative but really mean (as you can see in the characters’ reaction). So I laugh about Chandler‘s demeanor, role my eyes at the lameness of the joke and cringe at him making such a big deal out of something he knows his friend feels really bad about. That’s what Oscar looked like to me.

Just exited about the last ep of season 4 and the beginning of s5
The very first character who Julia Roberts character is talking to is her sister Lisa Roberts-Gillian.
Rachel getting upset over the list is totally called for. I have stretch marks on my body. Clear ones. Lots of them too. My ex boyfriend 10 years ago had never saw them. I always insisted turning off the lights whenever we were intimate. But one morning I woke up at him staring at them. I covered myself up. He didnt say anything. He ghosted me after. Its sad that you couldnt accept your insecurities. But when your SO sees it as a reason to not be with you, the insecurities just creep in deeper and deeper. I hated him for that. I know he is not worth it. But I couldnt help remembering that moment. Its still clear in my mind even after so long.
In the end, Friends was just a 1/2hr sitcom...the storyline isn't the same as it would be in most shows today.

Plus , Ross called her "spoiled" after 1 and a half year of her trying to not be spoiled anymore and work for herself. that's not a fair "flaw" at that point in time. and calling her "ditsy", that is an old fashioned mlsogynlst label for a woman, not a real flaw.

Bad directions? You would think after watching the show this long he would understand Joey better. Joey was over acting like he always does when he gets a chance at a small role because he is trying to get noticed. It had nothing to do with the director or the direction he was told to do with the part. Where did that idea even come from? Sometimes watching this guy react to my favorite show of all time is hard because he comes at a character or a scene or a joke from the wrong angle and has an absurd take on it.

The one part of your Ross and Rachel analysis that you have to take into consideration is that the whole list idea was NOT Ross' idea. So its not that he was making a list with his friends. They were suggesting the list and even helping him put things on the list. That's relevant to other things that happen going forward.

@@lunaballesano6410 SPOILER - Because of how they broke up. Again, whos idea was it for Ross to go to the strip club. Then once he was there, they didn't even pay any attention to him. And just like the time with the list, none of them spoke up for Ross and tried to take responsibility for encouraging him to end up in that situation.
@@wilsonsmanz Yeah, I get what you mean. But Rachel wouldn't have cared anyways. From her perspective it didn't matter what the friends did because it ultimately was Ross´decision. He was the one she trusted.
What I actually think should have been more in focus is that Ross didn't sleep with the woman due to the "break", he slept with her because he thought Rachel was sleeping with Mark.
The "we were on a break" thing was a way to convey the truth (that he genuinely didn't think he was cheating). But still lying about the context of why (-the assumption that Rachel slept with Mark). The reasoning was never that Rachel was unclear. It was just a better argument then "I thought you slept with someone else because of my insecurities after my lesbian wife cheated on me"😂.
@@lunaballesano6410 I'm not looking at the outcome. I'm focusing on how the situation got started and what real friends are supposed to do. Even if the outcome remains the same, a friend should do everything they can to help especially if they had a hand in causing it.

@@gabsmulinariyup, original aired episodes were all 25-27 minutes. Also on VHS, DVD and Blu-ray they were the same length. Only when cable started to struggle about 10 years ago did they shorten the episode lengths to 22 minutes to make room for more commercials. Then, when Netflix bought the rights to it they only got the shortened versions for some reason.
s02 e14 is the best!!
Another example is in the discussion of the first episode he says poor girls ( Monica and Rachel) saying that they are fighting over a guy that is a womanizer and all he cares about is his career. They hit on him at his place of work. A woman found him attractive and hit on him and in turn he found a woman attractive and hit on her. Then Rachel asked him on a date which he excepted only to be told that she is canceling and sending the girl that he didn’t find attractive in the first place. And was also told a lie about what kinda date it was going to be in which he would get lucky. What did Van Damn to wrong here? I don’t see anything.

I was born in 1990 and am a French speaker and yet Friends is the only place I've ever heard of him
@@claraginevra6527 OK. But he's not just known to French speakers, he's known internationally. Pretty much as famous as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone and Bruce Willis. To have both him and Julia Roberts make an appearance on the show at that point was a huge deal, they were the biggest stars to have appeared up to that point.
Van Damme was the star of the 70th biggest movie of 1990, the 45th and 56st biggest of 1991, the 41st of 1992, the 70th and 48th of 1993, the 13th and 32nd of 1994 and so on.

Van Damme is only known for action, unlike the other two you mentioned or Roberts. All the others still act. I was born in 1991 and only know him from Friends too. Like you examples show you would need to be at least 10 when this come out to really see movies where has been in. Or like old action films.

Your reaction to Ross and Rachel is typical of what was at the time these aired but they were the reason I almost stopped watching the show. To me, they are the two least likeable characters and so much time was spent on their relationship in the beginning. I tend to skip the first two seasons when rewatching Friends since their will they/won't they relationship was too much of the focus in the beginning. The seasons get better as the years go on since they stop being so much of the focus. Their characters still have equal time with the others but it's not so much obsession with their relationship. Much better.
As a woman I'll do whatever Julia Roberts want me to do 😍! She's so perfect! I've been in love with that woman since I'm like 10 yo!
People could joke about certain stuff back then, cause nobody took themselves too serious...nobody got offended and a sense of humor was still allowed🤷♀️
