You touched on the main thing that made me so uncomfortable with him. He humiliates people on national television and I don't see how that can be helpful to these people's mental health

The show, his never ending stack of books , he and son have the businesses together that continue with the farce of Physiatry, etc.. another source of biz for Opie W ( the biggest racist in the world)... Freak shows that make you laugh and feel very blessed not to be that messed up . And what happened to Robin?? @@Taureanfitness Dr Phil is, to me, a grifter. He will do anything for 💰. He and his son run Doctor's on demand, an expensive therapy system which connects patients to therapists. Biggest problem is that many are just councillors, not trained Medical Therapists. His wife has a major lifestyle and cosmetics programme. The only honest McGraw is the son who's a talented singer and guitarist. He refused all offers of promotion from his father. He wants it all to be his own work.
Does he say that? Wow. As a German I never saw a full episode, just from time to time short clips, mostly if it's shown on other RUclipsrs' channels. I don't like him and I don't like the show. I don't like the sensational use of mentally ill people, even then when they don't want to be in his show. This was the worst, when I saw how one or two ran and just wanted out of the studios and the cameras didn't just follow but hunted them. If I were brought into this show under false expectations or even forced by my parents when I'd be a minor, I would never forgive them. Although I saw stuff I thought he was right, or that he helped someone but the negative stuff outweighs these few moments far too much. Whatever, he for sure is not not judgmental. Nobody can be this totally. I work voluntarily with people with mental health issues and similar and it's very hard to stay objective. Since my work is online and I can choose who I talk to it's easier for me. But even then, sometimes I just don't want, for example if someone is an abuser and thinks they're the victims, or something like this. And I would never trust someone who says they're always objective, I only trust some individuals if they say to me that they're objective about a specific topic. And I know many professionals and no one of these I trust would ever say that, at least not to me.
the problem with narcissist's is their striking lack of self awareness! they never even consider the possibility that they could be wrong! therefore they rarely can be helped or changed! it's sort of like the blind leading the blind and I feel he's damaging people far more then helping.

Excellent analysis. My ex watched the show when we were together and it always bothered me, for many of the reasons you've mentioned. The one I noticed the most was how he couldn't deviate from the narrative. It was like he had a script in his mind, he had a conclusion he was leading to, and like he was a director of a play guiding the other performances where he wanted them to go. The more people tried to deviate and actually talk about their experience or the more (understandably) frustrated they'd get by his redirection of the narrative, the more bullying he'd become. He'd flat out tell them to stop talking, and then publicly shame them on national TV for their anger/uncooperative nature/lack of agreeableness, or use weaponized psychology such as throwing a term like "emotional confusion" as an insult to "put them in their place". It seems like a form of narcissistic abuse (ie demanding narcissistic supply, blaming/shaming/belittling those uncooperative with providing it, they react negatively, the narcissist feels validated that the other person is clearly the problem). The whole show and his attitude feels so exploitative and damaging.
I've often wondered why people want to be on his show. It doesn't seem like a good idea to literally have your problems on stage for everyone to see, yet people seem to continue wanting to be guests.
@Joy Georgina The resources agree to provide the treatment in exchange for publicity on the show. Phil and his show do not pay for this treatment. There is no treatment for some of the person's mental health issues, like personality disorders or delusional disorders. Treatment for the affected family members is possible, though.
I completely agree with everything you said Dr Grande. When you mentioned control therapy, I remember that show being on and Phil McGraw said to one of his guests/clients, "It's my way or the highway. " when he was challenged by a quest. I turned that into a clinical setting and thought, no respectable psychological would ever say that to a client. I haven't watched that show since that day. I don't think you can even consider them his clients. They are just guests on the show. I bet he pays them To be his guests. Insurance would never pay him for his work because it's not considered therapy.
@@lc4life369 He chooses guests on the basis of how controversial they will be. His staff are known to fear his outbursts if they can't persuade somebody to be on the show. I believe he's well past his sell-by date and should retire. His "reality TV" style show is not good for those who have real problems.
Somewhere around 10 or 15 years ago, a friend of mine appeared on Dr. Phil's show. She reported later that her appearance was actually edited to make her look stupid or ill-informed about the topic, which had to do with child custody issues. They would preserve an out-of context stunned look on her face, but eliminate or severely edit her answers to questions to the point of being misleading. I suspect that dishonest editing is also a big piece of this show. Only including what he wants people to say, how he wants people to look. And cutting out anything which is at odds with his preconceived notions or overall agenda.
People forget to recognize that THIS IS A pure entertainment, a SHOW and only A SHOW. People who go on these kind of entertainment shows expect fairness, advice, etc. Im sure they get a free meal, hotel and travel costs if not more to be used on a show as “ puppets “. Im sure they sign documents as to how their appearance may or may not be altered to fit and suit producers agenda. I had an offer to appear in small claim court on so called tv show and I have declined. I would not put my face on tv to be used like this for no money. It appears that they have the whole “machine” of people looking up court cases in small court claims and contact plaintiffs to appear on their show. You would be surprised how many people would go on tv just for a chance to be on tv and have producers to pay for their free weekend in LA. People like your friend do that without thinking of consequences and than they complain that they have been humiliated.
I don’t see how any real therapist can be a fan of Phil McGraw. He’s exploitive and in my opinion dangerous. I’ve watched very few episodes over the years but never been impressed and often shocked by his lack of ethics.
"Dr" Phil is rude, arrogant and narcissistic. I cannot watch his show because I get so angry with how he speaks down to people. He doesn't seem to care that he could be hurting them or worsening the situation they are there to get help for. I sometimes wonder why anyone would go on his show knowing how he treats people. I think you missed out on mentioning how Phil McGraw’s wife is sometimes given her chance to advertise her own beauty products as they are all endorsed by Dr.Phil. I actually stopped watching Dr.Phil just because more and more episodes towards the end were slowly turning into a tv shopping channel.
I agree, the show is all about promoting themselves. Robin was once a beautiful woman. Whoever did her plastic surgeries did an awful job. It’s actually hard to look at her now. 🤢🤮
Thank you for posting this. He was most offended when someone called his show a 'reality show' but that is exactly what it is. I think they looked at the Jerry Springer show and wanted to create something a little less dramatic but with a format that included people airing their dirty linen in public, because people want to watch that kind of thing. He certainly plays to the audience at the expense of the people on the stage. I found it most distressing when a man who had raped and abused his daughter over a long period was offered help, but the daughter who was obviously deeply traumatised was told that perhaps she could somehow get over it enough to have a relationship with her father and moreover, that was 'up to her'. I am sure that some people have been helped, but those with trauma such as the girl recently who repeatedly pretended to be pregnant and wished to give away her child in order to make contact with the outside world would, I suggest, have been further damaged by making this known to thousands of people. I find it interesting that in his office he is surrounded by photographs of himself.
I’m embarrassed that it took me, a health care professional, so long to catch on to his awfulness - just goes to show how slick he is and absolutely can’t be trusted. I think my first glimmer is when he has his very frail wife there for every single episode. I mean , what? Just to Dow her off or to torture her to bits.... I definitely don’t have STUPID printed on my forehead.

I will say that Dr. Phil in the early days of the show, there was actually some educational value and he got deeper into the psychology of his guests. The show was closer to actually being therapy. The thing is now, he's become kind of a Jerry Springer reality show in the sense there's very little depth, there's way more drama and it's basically a free for all in terms of the subjects they cover.
I knew it wasn't therapy from the beginning. He's a tv host. That is it. He should be off the air...lots of people don't realize its an act. He causes harm and quite possibly has triggered a few if not several suicides. He should be banned and off the air now.
I really appreciate and respect your politeness and ability to use professional ‘constraint’, even when explaining someone or something you don’t necessarily agree with - such a good example, especially to those of us still working on emotional regulation and learning how to eloquently explain, without injecting personal emotion into the equation... and the result? MSW student-we were just talking about Dr Phil in my advanced practice skills class and you’re absolutely right, we discussed how Dr. Phil is a great example of how NOT to treat clients. I think the episodes that enrage me the most are the ones where he brings people with obvious delusional disorders and turns them into spectacles where the entire audience is just laughing at them. He doesn’t even address the disorder or explain delusions at all.
Dr G et alia, Dr P discovered at some point that he can exploit his quick wit and knowledge to produce entertainment! This is probably 95+% of his motive - fame and fortune. His 'guests' are carefully vetted through a formulaic production process too! No offense but isn't this all abundantly obvious??

Staci Jordan - I couldn't agree more. I'm able to sum my feelings and thoughts of Dr. Phil in this way. He's a few steps lower than a sleazy used car salesman. And in all likelihood has an arsenal of psychological and physical means of bullying men and women into his sewer.
And as is said at the beginning of the show, that being there as a guest is a safe place to be. Are you kidding me? For the rest of your life you are on RUclips. One simple example is the boy who slapped his mother in the face. He will be about 20 now. But he is still to be seen on RUclips. Very therapeutic!

Phil McGraw is Maury with a PhD. Several years ago, one of my friends from college was on the Rachael Ray Show. She had a rare eating disorder called Orthorexia, and she talked about it with Rachael Ray, whose background is in cooking. Anyway, after that, she received an appearance invitation from the Dr. Phil show. They wanted her to come on the show with her parents and siblings and rehash everything that they had already worked through in counseling and everything she had worked through and inpatient treatment for her eating disorder. At this point, she was almost 30 years old, and the Dr. Phil show wanted to bring her back on to discuss these issues she’d had in college. He wanted to HURT her family and publicly shame her for views. She turned down the invitation.
I was on the Dr. Phil show and he humiliated me and did not ask about my background, I am diagnosed with CPTSD and am a Trauma survivor. I really believed in him, and that he could help me, and instead, he made everything look like it was my fault without getting to the root of the problem. I felt like I was fighting for my life. He is still showing me on the show which was aired 12 years ago. It still is humiliating and I do not know what to do. He really is terrible. He keeps the trauma alive and he puts himself in the best light. He cut off a lot of the things that I said in the show so that he looked good. After the show, I was dismissed like garbage and they had nothing else to say to me.
1) breaking boundaries - he used his profession unethically to maintain a relationship with a client 2)self-aggrandizement - claims expertise in multiple fields with questionable vocabulary and credentials to back the claims to such expertise 3) excessive need for adulation (wife must gaze adoringly at him from the audience) 4) inflexibility, inability to go off script even in minor ways, inability to agree to disagree There's more. Before I knew what malignant narcissism is, I knew that Phil McGraw would not be someone to whom I would go for help.

Yes! I've noticed this particularly with guests with drug or alcohol problems. He really talks down to them and shows absolutely no compassion or understanding for what they're battling.

I have had a counselor get in my face, and it worked. It's what was needed.. But anymore someone confronting another person's bullshit is pretty much considered "bullying". We are very tender these days it seems. That seems to be the root of many current issues. People have confused their opinions for fact and defend them as such. But I thought "the psychos" was what it was about. Maybe you just weren't a great counselor. More suited for the theoretical side of the industry.
That's it, you just earned my full respect. I get so incredibly frustrated by his anti-mental health exploitation of truly sick people. What he did with Britney and Shelley Duvall was the opposite of what should have been done. He played into Shelley's delusions during an episode of worsened schizophrenia (previously diagnosed), and exploited her during a time that she needed help the most, and I think we all know what he did to Britney during her challenging period when she was in the hospital no less.

But you never told us whose theory or theories you use, Dr. Grande. But yeah, there's just an intangible "something" about Dr. Phil that puts me off, so I don't usually watch his show. And he certainly isn't a perfectionist, but I think he may want to be! From just listening to him, you realize that he has given a perfect 10 to his wife, his sons and daughters-in-law, their children, his house, seems like every aspect of his life is, well, perfect!! There is just so much of this braggadochio I can handle. I cannot say my life has turned out to be a perfect 10! And I don't believe anyone's is or ever has been. The British Royal family is making the news about a few lightweight, would-be scandals involving Queen Elizabeth's kids and grandkids. So, even within a royal family, people are still not perfect! But Dr. Phil believes everyone and everything he has or owns IS perfect - except himself. He has an ingratiating humility before his guests and his TV audiences. He admits, "I'm not God but I'm here to help you." But, is he being sincere? I'm wondering if we'll get any reaction from Dr. Phil? A friendly reaction would be very nice to see from both sides of the fence!
@@kukalakana I think Dr Grande said in an earlier video that Dr. Phil didn't have a current license. So while he still may have his PhD, if he's not a legally practicing clinician, it could be a reason not to refer to him as a doctor in a clinical context. He mentions the absence of the license in this vid too.

You really nailed it--identifying all the distorted and dysfunctional ways he interacts with guests including his lack of empathy and neutrality. After randomly watching about 4-5 episodes I've found myself [as a counselor as well] quite disturbed by his approach and tactics. I've had a visceral response to some of the ways he really humiliates guests. There is nothing therapeutic about his approach. I've often wondered how those guests walk away feeling about themselves after being on that show. I really appreciate your direct, factual descriptions of behaviors of the people you review on your channel, as well as your transparency about how you feel about these folks. You do a great job of sharing that but also presenting a clear, concise and factual representation within your assessment
I remember around 2003 he had a segment called “Get Real” where he would dress mental health patients down military style. I could barely stand to watch even a couple minutes.
He can be so brutal it's hard to watch esp when you know how wrong & damaging this could be & likely is for those people. He gets sued quite often actually from what I've read incl his own employees he locked in a ballroom once & told them pyt their phones in baskets (to prevent filming). Between his abusive nature to people he knows aren't well & his ego I can't watch & no I don't need to see him hawking his wife's skin creams etc. Their bottom-line is all about the $$$$$$.

I feel he sensationalizes people's pain and exploits for profit. I realize that is a strong statement. He is off-putting to me on several levels. I don't see him as a "safe" person because of the way he responds to people's comments; right or wrong, I believe maintaining another persons dignity is crucial not just as a professional, but also as a human. I'm an empath so maybe his approach just rubs me the wrong way, not sure; I just personally would run away from a person like this.

Absolutely, Even before any narc therapy there was a gut wrenching feeling every time I saw him. Had I followed his advise in raising a family with "issues" would have destroyed them for sure. Look at his history....how many times married....????? Physician heal thyself!!!!!!
No need for politineness, he's totally exploiting people's mental illness for profit. The premise of his show is to "tell it like it is" and to prove he's "The Man." It's a show about him, the guests are just props of the week. He's constantly being incredibly irresponsible and unethical with them.
We do need to be mindful of the fact that he has been a staple daytime "star" for many years now on TV. He's proven his longevity! And that requires a certain edge to a person's presentation. Dr. Phil is good for kicks, plus some worthwhile lessons for all of us, as well.
Phil seems to shame people with serious illnesses, like the delusional. I don't see who this could possibly help. Asking an obviously delusional person questions about why they are delusional isn't going to work.
But hopefully anyone watching will at least pick up the habit of asking themselves if they are being delusional.... (conservative reaction) ....however, they might instead pick up the habit of accusing others of being delusional. (leftist reaction)

In my opinion, you nailed it when you mentioned that Phil McGraw appears to have, "superficial charm". That is exactly why I have never been able to watch a full segment of anything he has ever talked about over the 2-3 times I have tried. I do not understand his popularity as I find him to be incredibly off-putting. To me, he appears to be some kind of a construct made for TV.

Making 100B while being on every channel 24 hours a day while curing cancer, AIDS and Covid in one day? Come on now!
I always sensed that the Dr. Phil show was just "Show Biz," where he always wins through using dominance and power over a pre-chosen victim. I found myself writhing in empathy for the worm that he quickly threaded on his hook and then paraded his crucified victim to the audience. He is just part of the celebrity crowd as far as I am concerned. I don't know why people would go on TV and display their dysfunctional relationships to millions of viewers. One might as well just show up naked. Have some privacy and dignity!
Hello Doctor! You did talk about shaming guests. But I was expecting that you talk about consequences of getting shamed on international television. I don't think TV is a place for any kind of mental illness treatment, especially if that involves belittling and humiliation.

Jerry Springer is more genuine. He does his trash show and doesn't pretend it is anything but trash. He also has really great advice at the end of his shows. He is way better. I'd EASILY go to him for advice over Phil.
Phil always came off to me as that guy who tells you to “just stop it” like he gave you a startling revelation that fixes all your problems. When the guest push’s back he attacks and mocks them because how dare you challenge his authority. After all, he’s the best person in the room, it’s his show. I’ve often wondered if he’s a some kind of narcissist.
Great explication. As an aside, I have often wondered exactly what the legal waivers and confidentiality statements of these talk shows contain. It always seemed like the guests were being psychologically butchered on live television for entertainment value; modern day versions of gladiators.

Personally, I don't think that would be particularly interesting. McGraw would just vacillate between bullying and self pitying behaviour and comments in an attempt to push buttons and dominate the stage. Meanwhile Dr Grande would become increasingly exasperated with Phil's petulant behaviour but remain professionally reserved.

He has a temper. He tries to get around it, but sometimes you can tell he's angry, but can't let it show! Oh well, for that kind of money I would try to do the exact same thing.
Such an insightful analysis of a pseudo therapist. I’ve also noticed that “Dr.” Phil seems to love any opportunity to pat himself on the back for his “efforts in the mental health community” limited as those efforts clearly are.
But he is a real therapist, he has a degree and many years of practice. He is a terrible therapist but there’s no point in putting quotations around the doctor title bc he’s a real doctor and not all doctors are experts in their fields nor necessarily good at their job

@@jamescarrington5521 the worst are from the public sector, they are afraid of giving you meds you actually need, like benzos, which I am taking with responsibility, if you suffer from chronic pain don't even think about oxycontin nor methadone nor paracetamol with codeine, because they're very addictive, yes they are, and they will rather send you to a pain management facility or just the hospital, and public hospitals are very awful, terrible even. Not to mention doctors from the public sector are annoying, scary, mean etc. My private psychiatrist understands my needs, what is happening to me, how awful I feel. But even here you can find bad apples, which I've seen more than once. Public sector sucks immensely.
Dr. Phil's goal is to get ratings, not help people during the show. That's why there's this sensationalist aspect to the show. He belittles people, goes out of his way to make himself look good and smarter than the guest, etc. It's all about getting people to tune in and watch. If any help is given, it's after the show when people see a therapist Dr. Phil has referred them to.
Incredible, a very insightful analysis! You're coming from such a genuine and empathetic standpoint, here as a professional in mental health. As you point out the ethical considerations when treating patients, and the aim of what his show really is about, which is clearly gaining revenue at the expense of others in their worst states; I can see why this would be a concern to you. And it is very concerning that's for sure!
As someone who has done therapy for many years and been helped enormously by it, I cringe when I see anything from “Dr. Phil”. He makes me really angry because what he does gives people the wrong impression of what therapy could/should really be like and I imagine turns people that might be otherwise helped by it off. He does the whole field a disservice. Thanks for calling him out.
I agree! It took me a long time to get the therapy help I needed and the Dr Phil show, among other things, did give me a false impression that made me think therapy would be awful
Im not a therapist, Im just a geologist. And I also cringe when I see anything from Phil McGraw. I think that that most people can see through him and recognise that what he does is just not normal behaviour.

I think this is my favourite video you have ever done, Dr. Phil is an opportunist, I don’t think he has any desire to help people, I’m not a therapist by any stretch of the imagination, but watching a careful and thoughtful therapist such as yourself call Dr. Phil out was fun to watch, and hopefully it will make people who are genuinely seeking help for their problems think twice about going on the Dr. Phil show.
I don't like the idea of someone being on tv and having conversation that should have doctor patient privilege. There is no trust and a vulnerable person can easily be taken advantage of. In this situation it probably has happened

YES! This is the exact problem-- if you say you are a psychologist (practically a reality TV demigo, to themselves AND their fans) and ask broken, wounded, possibly suicidal or addicted people, as they are plummeting towards their "bottom" as it is, and you tell them they can be treated like royalty for a few days and be a star on tv as to boot... Well, there is NO WAY you will get a bunch of polite refusals like, “no, thank you, I'm headed to Paris that week for a stay at my pied a terre-- Ta!" No-- not a chance! It is FAR more likely that a bunch of mentally ill people who are SUFFERING in their own lives, will grab at any chance to escape from their own suffering. They may even KNOW that, EVEN THOUGH it is probably going to make their overall lives worse, at least getting pampered by Dr. Phil Show staff will make them feel better for a little while...

Dr. Phil is neither helpful nor a very good counselor. I am like you, Not a fan. Too much drama & showboating for my taste. You, on the other hand, are Superlative, from my perspective. Calling out: polygraphs, MENSA, etc, has been informative & enlightening. Glad you don't have his abrasive, coarse & glib attitude. Bravo, Dr. Grande! Mart Cichocki He’s not a counselor, he’s a Doctor. He does good work, however, the tv aspect- music and non-effects- can be a bit much. And as far as counselors/therapists, there are competent and incompetent ones. I’ve had both.

I guess he didn't like being approached from behind because he reprimanded her. His response was significantly disproportionate to the offense, causing us audience members to give each other the side glance.

A young man who was an alcoholic was on the show. He said alcohol was made available to him. I was not watching the show but stopped on the channel as the young man was “assisted” on stage by two huge men because he could not walk on his own. He was in tears, red faced, and so ill that an ambulance was in order. Later hearing that alcohol was offered…made me sick to my stomach. I feel they could have killed him.
Dr Phil is an entertainer before he’s a therapist. Getting people to watch his show by being bombastic and unsubstantial is precedent over helping anyone.
Well all I can say is that he irritates the cr$p out of me. He talks AT people and avoids eye contact a lot. I think he is as fake as the day is long. It’s all about his ratings. Almost like a theatrical production going on. Just weird and I avoid his shows like the plague.

Wait and see. “Do you want to be happy or do you want to be right?” = Right fighting is wrong, even though I have never once admitted on any show that I could be wrong. So do as I say, not as I do. I’m sure you’ve found many more. I’ll start watching now.
All of these are examples of pandering to an audience to get viewers. His audience exists mostly of simpleton, low to average educated folks. These people embrace the “ah-shucks, I’m a simple country boy” act. Also keep things black:white, right/wrong terms because it’s easier for the audience. . Things that have gray-area or multiple variables relating to mental health conditions or a problem do not do well in a tv time slot, so keep it simple. Claiming to be the expert works because compared to everyone else watching and guests on the show he is MORE of an expert. Make sure to keep your audience dumb and get people on the show that are way to manipulate. And boom! You get ratings!
I really appreciate your commentary on Phil McGraw, he is so inept. I have never thought that he knows what he is doing, I have heard him say terrible things to guests in very delicate situations.
The way he exploited Shelley Duvall was beyond low. He should've been jailed. Shelley was an amazing actress that I believed it was a complete set up for ratings.
Oy Friggin Vey! I remember that. I remember Phil having Gene Simmons from Kiss shame a wannabe rock star living with his parents. Gene mostly urged the kid or whomever to formulate more realistic goals and have a plan B. Made sense but the shame, humiliation,and bullying tone was evident not to mention the condescension on the parts of both host and guest towards the hapless I won't say patient but maybe unrealistic hobbyist. Self aggrandizing at it's worst.

I have waited for so long of somebody who speaks out about Dr. Phil. He is so miserable and humiliating that I sometimes could have screamed. Just found your channel. Very interesting. I have never liked dr phil. Maybe my observation is off, but i have often felt like he enjoyed humiliating many of his guests who were honestly seeking assistance and even some that weren’t. If that makes me want to vomit, I can only imagine what & how bad those guests felt. They didn’t deserve that.
Having been raised by a narcissist that's what jumps out to me with Dr. Phil. Someone will be trying to tell their story or make a point and it's grabbed and flipped into a yay Dr. Phil opportunity.
Phil's show is all about him, "look at me, look at me". There is something wrong with how he takes his wife at the end of his show. Hasn't she a life outside of him. He preys on vulnerable people to bolster his very over inflated ego.
I have been watching Dr. Phil for many years. I am a Marriage and Family Therapist Associate. I have noticed that he can some times be a bully, he is arrogant. He takes credit for what his sponsors do -- he does not pay for the therapy that he sends the guests on his show too. I don;t agree with some of the advice that he gives on his show--he comes off as being very Narcissistic. He can be a bore with all his patty himself of the back and bragging. Tired of his sells talk about his sons books and Dr. On Demand, and his wife's Robins beauty products.

She was a bored housewife, she would talk with her other bore white friends about the show "Can you believe how CRAZY that chick was?". She'd watch a wardrobe makeover show to identify what was wrong with each outfit, then watch Maury to scoff at the cheaters and liars, then watch Dr. Phil to identify the "crazy" person's condition. Watching human suffering was a fun game for her on-par with laughing at someone's leopard print '70s bellbottoms. I think that's the demographic who most enjoys Dr. Phil.
I see his shows as pure business: the facilities where guest s are send to. I don't think he pays one dime for that, on the contrary. His books that he promotes all the time, the lady from the pharmaceutical industry has 15 minutes to sell her products, doctor on demand, etc. It is a shameless enrichment of himself, his wife, his son.
Where I come from there is the semi-humorous term "sledgehammer mechanic" indicating a lack of finesse, care, and knowledge, instead using brute force. Some say "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing" (the Dunning-Kruger effect). Much knowledge can be even more of a dangerous thing if held by a malevolent mind. Exposing charlatans is always a good thing, except to the charlatans, but then again they ask for it with their words and actions. Thank you.
Your thoughts on Dr Phil are understandable, as the show has implied ties to your own field. A big thing to remember is that "Dr Phil" is a tv show; the real therapist was Phil McGraw, who voluntarily gave up his license to practice and instead continued as a tv talk show host. The income potential for tv hosts is much larger than forensic psychologists. He took what he had to work with such as the Dr. title, the Texas attitude, the years of learning psychological lingo, his success at "reading" people as a jury consultant, and a friendship with Oprah and turned it all into a highly watched show. The thought that licensed therapists would take away lessons from a tv show is as scary as Gordon Ramsey providing management training to culinary students. (Edited to add this thought: In case anyone misunderstands this, the statement"provide education" Dr Phil refers to is aimed at the home audience, not the professionals.)
You nailed it. Dr. Phil is in the entertainment industry and provides useful reality check advice to guests along with recommended professional follow-up care. Viewers benefit to the degree they enjoy the show’s entertainment value and perhaps recognize and acknowledge similar behavior patterns in their own lives. That’s about all you can expect from a nationally broadcast TV program. The real question is why anyone would want to appear on the show and expose their problems to millions.
I always found it troubling that he takes sides when “treating” his patients. That has never been helpful especially for the person whose side he doesn’t take.. I think they’re probably deeply troubled and seeing an “authority” figure be against them will probable make it all worse
I have always been confused with Dr. Phil. I was under the impression that he met Oprah during her defamation case with the Beef industry. I was told that he was her jury consultant.

@@Taureanfitness Dr Phil is, to me, a grifter. He will do anything for 💰. He and his son run Doctor's on demand, an expensive therapy system which connects patients to therapists. Biggest problem is that many are just councillors, not trained Medical Therapists. His wife has a major lifestyle and cosmetics programme. The only honest McGraw is the son who's a talented singer and guitarist. He refused all offers of promotion from his father. He wants it all to be his own work.

Does he say that? Wow. As a German I never saw a full episode, just from time to time short clips, mostly if it's shown on other RUclipsrs' channels. I don't like him and I don't like the show. I don't like the sensational use of mentally ill people, even then when they don't want to be in his show. This was the worst, when I saw how one or two ran and just wanted out of the studios and the cameras didn't just follow but hunted them. If I were brought into this show under false expectations or even forced by my parents when I'd be a minor, I would never forgive them.
Although I saw stuff I thought he was right, or that he helped someone but the negative stuff outweighs these few moments far too much.
Whatever, he for sure is not not judgmental. Nobody can be this totally. I work voluntarily with people with mental health issues and similar and it's very hard to stay objective. Since my work is online and I can choose who I talk to it's easier for me. But even then, sometimes I just don't want, for example if someone is an abuser and thinks they're the victims, or something like this. And I would never trust someone who says they're always objective, I only trust some individuals if they say to me that they're objective about a specific topic.
And I know many professionals and no one of these I trust would ever say that, at least not to me.

People take this man seriously and I find that irresponsible of the management of the Station; I wish they'd shut him down. Excellent analysis. My ex watched the show when we were together and it always bothered me, for many of the reasons you've mentioned. The one I noticed the most was how he couldn't deviate from the narrative. It was like he had a script in his mind, he had a conclusion he was leading to, and like he was a director of a play guiding the other performances where he wanted them to go. The more people tried to deviate and actually talk about their experience or the more (understandably) frustrated they'd get by his redirection of the narrative, the more bullying he'd become. He'd flat out tell them to stop talking, and then publicly shame them on national TV for their anger/uncooperative nature/lack of agreeableness, or use weaponized psychology such as throwing a term like "emotional confusion" as an insult to "put them in their place". It seems like a form of narcissistic abuse (ie demanding narcissistic supply, blaming/shaming/belittling those uncooperative with providing it, they react negatively, the narcissist feels validated that the other person is clearly the problem). The whole show and his attitude feels so exploitative and damaging.

I've often wondered why people want to be on his show. It doesn't seem like a good idea to literally have your problems on stage for everyone to see, yet people seem to continue wanting to be guests.

@Joy Georgina The resources agree to provide the treatment in exchange for publicity on the show. Phil and his show do not pay for this treatment. There is no treatment for some of the person's mental health issues, like personality disorders or delusional disorders. Treatment for the affected family members is possible, though.
I completely agree with everything you said Dr Grande. When you mentioned control therapy, I remember that show being on and Phil McGraw said to one of his guests/clients, "It's my way or the highway. " when he was challenged by a quest. I turned that into a clinical setting and thought, no respectable psychological would ever say that to a client. I haven't watched that show since that day.

@@lc4life369 He chooses guests on the basis of how controversial they will be. His staff are known to fear his outbursts if they can't persuade somebody to be on the show. I believe he's well past his sell-by date and should retire. His "reality TV" style show is not good for those who have real problems.
Somewhere around 10 or 15 years ago, a friend of mine appeared on Dr. Phil's show. She reported later that her appearance was actually edited to make her look stupid or ill-informed about the topic, which had to do with child custody issues. They would preserve an out-of context stunned look on her face, but eliminate or severely edit her answers to questions to the point of being misleading. I suspect that dishonest editing is also a big piece of this show. Only including what he wants people to say, how he wants people to look. And cutting out anything which is at odds with his preconceived notions or overall agenda.
Fact is that all reality TV does that; The Apprentice & Celebrity Apprentice was big into that.

People forget to recognize that THIS IS A pure entertainment, a SHOW and only A SHOW. People who go on these kind of entertainment shows expect fairness, advice, etc. Im sure they get a free meal, hotel and travel costs if not more to be used on a show as “ puppets “. Im sure they sign documents as to how their appearance may or may not be altered to fit and suit producers agenda. I had an offer to appear in small claim court on so called tv show and I have declined. I would not put my face on tv to be used like this for no money. It appears that they have the whole “machine” of people looking up court cases in small court claims and contact plaintiffs to appear on their show. You would be surprised how many people would go on tv just for a chance to be on tv and have producers to pay for their free weekend in LA. People like your friend do that without thinking of consequences and than they complain that they have been humiliated.

I don’t see how any real therapist can be a fan of Phil McGraw. He’s exploitive and in my opinion dangerous. I’ve watched very few episodes over the years but never been impressed and often shocked by his lack of ethics.
I am one. I loathe him. But the catfish episodes are pretty damn good. However. I cannot believe it when he has mentally ill guests on his show

"Dr" Phil is rude, arrogant and narcissistic. I cannot watch his show because I get so angry with how he speaks down to people. He doesn't seem to care that he could be hurting them or worsening the situation they are there to get help for. I sometimes wonder why anyone would go on his show knowing how he treats people. Thanks for the wonderful analysis of a very entitled man.

I think you missed out on mentioning how Phil McGraw’s wife is sometimes given her chance to advertise her own beauty products as they are all endorsed by Dr.Phil. I actually stopped watching Dr.Phil just because more and more episodes towards the end were slowly turning into a tv shopping channel.

Thank you for posting this. He was most offended when someone called his show a 'reality show' but that is exactly what it is. I think they looked at the Jerry Springer show and wanted to create something a little less dramatic but with a format that included people airing their dirty linen in public, because people want to watch that kind of thing. He certainly plays to the audience at the expense of the people on the stage. I found it most distressing when a man who had raped and abused his daughter over a long period was offered help, but the daughter who was obviously deeply traumatised was told that perhaps she could somehow get over it enough to have a relationship with her father and moreover, that was 'up to her'. I am sure that some people have been helped, but those with trauma such as the girl recently who repeatedly pretended to be pregnant and wished to give away her child in order to make contact with the outside world would, I suggest, have been further damaged by making this known to thousands of people. I find it interesting that in his office he is surrounded by photographs of himself.

I will say that Dr. Phil in the early days of the show, there was actually some educational value and he got deeper into the psychology of his guests. The show was closer to actually being therapy.
The thing is now, he's become kind of a Jerry Springer reality show in the sense there's very little depth, there's way more drama and it's basically a free for all in terms of the subjects they cover.

MSW student-we were just talking about Dr Phil in my advanced practice skills class and you’re absolutely right, we discussed how Dr. Phil is a great example of how NOT to treat clients. I think the episodes that enrage me the most are the ones where he brings people with obvious delusional disorders and turns them into spectacles where the entire audience is just laughing at them. He doesn’t even address the disorder or explain delusions at all.

And as is said at the beginning of the show, that being there as a guest is a safe place to be. Are you kidding me? For the rest of your life you are on RUclips. One simple example is the boy who slapped his mother in the face. He will be about 20 now. But he is still to be seen on RUclips. Very therapeutic!

Phil McGraw is Maury with a PhD. Several years ago, one of my friends from college was on the Rachael Ray Show. She had a rare eating disorder called Orthorexia, and she talked about it with Rachael Ray, whose background is in cooking. Anyway, after that, she received an appearance invitation from the Dr. Phil show. They wanted her to come on the show with her parents and siblings and rehash everything that they had already worked through in counseling and everything she had worked through and inpatient treatment for her eating disorder. At this point, she was almost 30 years old, and the Dr. Phil show wanted to bring her back on to discuss these issues she’d had in college. He wanted to HURT her family and publicly shame her for views. She turned down the invitation.

I was on the Dr. Phil show and he humiliated me and did not ask about my background, I am diagnosed with CPTSD and am a Trauma survivor. I really believed in him, and that he could help me, and instead, he made everything look like it was my fault without getting to the root of the problem. I felt like I was fighting for my life. He is still showing me on the show which was aired 12 years ago. It still is humiliating and I do not know what to do. He really is terrible. He keeps the trauma alive and he puts himself in the best light. He cut off a lot of the things that I said in the show so that he looked good. After the show, I was dismissed like garbage and they had nothing else to say to me.

Yes! I've noticed this particularly with guests with drug or alcohol problems. He really talks down to them and shows absolutely no compassion or understanding for what they're battling.

@@kukalakana I think Dr Grande said in an earlier video that Dr. Phil didn't have a current license. So while he still may have his PhD, if he's not a legally practicing clinician, it could be a reason not to refer to him as a doctor in a clinical context. He mentions the absence of the license in this vid too.

You really nailed it--identifying all the distorted and dysfunctional ways he interacts with guests including his lack of empathy and neutrality. After randomly watching about 4-5 episodes I've found myself [as a counselor as well] quite disturbed by his approach and tactics. I've had a visceral response to some of the ways he really humiliates guests. There is nothing therapeutic about his approach. I've often wondered how those guests walk away feeling about themselves after being on that show.
I really appreciate your direct, factual descriptions of behaviors of the people you review on your channel, as well as your transparency about how you feel about these folks. You do a great job of sharing that but also presenting a clear, concise and factual representation within your assessment
I remember around 2003 he had a segment called “Get Real” where he would dress mental health patients down military style. I could barely stand to watch even a couple minutes.
He can be so brutal it's hard to watch esp when you know how wrong & damaging this could be & likely is for those people. He gets sued quite often actually from what I've read incl his own employees he locked in a ballroom once & told them pyt their phones in baskets (to prevent filming). Between his abusive nature to people he knows aren't well & his ego I can't watch & no I don't need to see him hawking his wife's skin creams etc. Their bottom-line is all about the $$$$$$.

I feel he sensationalizes people's pain and exploits for profit. I realize that is a strong statement. He is off-putting to me on several levels. I don't see him as a "safe" person because of the way he responds to people's comments; right or wrong, I believe maintaining another persons dignity is crucial not just as a professional, but also as a human. I'm an empath so maybe his approach just rubs me the wrong way, not sure; I just personally would run away from a person like this.

Phil always came off to me as that guy who tells you to “just stop it” like he gave you a startling revelation that fixes all your problems. When the guest push’s back he attacks and mocks them because how dare you challenge his authority. After all, he’s the best person in the room, it’s his show.

Great explication. As an aside, I have often wondered exactly what the legal waivers and confidentiality statements of these talk shows contain. It always seemed like the guests were being psychologically butchered on live television for entertainment value; modern day versions of gladiators.

Personally, I don't think that would be particularly interesting. McGraw would just vacillate between bullying and self pitying behaviour and comments in an attempt to push buttons and dominate the stage. Meanwhile Dr Grande would become increasingly exasperated with Phil's petulant behaviour but remain professionally reserved.

Such an insightful analysis of a pseudo therapist. I’ve also noticed that “Dr.” Phil seems to love any opportunity to pat himself on the back for his “efforts in the mental health community” limited as those efforts clearly are.
The show is just that, a show about Dr. Phil a covert narcissist if ever there was one.
But he is a real therapist, he has a degree and many years of practice. He is a terrible therapist but there’s no point in putting quotations around the doctor title bc he’s a real doctor and not all doctors are experts in their fields nor necessarily good at their job

@@jamescarrington5521 the worst are from the public sector, they are afraid of giving you meds you actually need, like benzos, which I am taking with responsibility, if you suffer from chronic pain don't even think about oxycontin nor methadone nor paracetamol with codeine, because they're very addictive, yes they are, and they will rather send you to a pain management facility or just the hospital, and public hospitals are very awful, terrible even. Not to mention doctors from the public sector are annoying, scary, mean etc.
My private psychiatrist understands my needs, what is happening to me, how awful I feel. But even here you can find bad apples, which I've seen more than once.
Public sector sucks immensely.

Dr. Phil's goal is to get ratings, not help people during the show. That's why there's this sensationalist aspect to the show. He belittles people, goes out of his way to make himself look good and smarter than the guest, etc. It's all about getting people to tune in and watch. If any help is given, it's after the show when people see a therapist Dr. Phil has referred them to.
I think he probably has a strong following of malignant narcissicists who use his tactics on their victims.

Incredible, a very insightful analysis! You're coming from such a genuine and empathetic standpoint, here as a professional in mental health. As you point out the ethical considerations when treating patients, and the aim of what his show really is about, which is clearly gaining revenue at the expense of others in their worst states; I can see why this would be a concern to you. And it is very concerning that's for sure!
As someone who has done therapy for many years and been helped enormously by it, I cringe when I see anything from “Dr. Phil”. He makes me really angry because what he does gives people the wrong impression of what therapy could/should really be like and I imagine turns people that might be otherwise helped by it off. He does the whole field a disservice. Thanks for calling him out.

I agree! It took me a long time to get the therapy help I needed and the Dr Phil show, among other things, did give me a false impression that made me think therapy would be awful
Im not a therapist, Im just a geologist. And I also cringe when I see anything from Phil McGraw. I think that that most people can see through him and recognise that what he does is just not normal behaviour.

I think this is my favourite video you have ever done, Dr. Phil is an opportunist, I don’t think he has any desire to help people, I’m not a therapist by any stretch of the imagination, but watching a careful and thoughtful therapist such as yourself call Dr. Phil out was fun to watch, and hopefully it will make people who are genuinely seeking help for their problems think twice about going on the Dr. Phil show.
I don't like the idea of someone being on tv and having conversation that should have doctor patient privilege. There is no trust and a vulnerable person can easily be taken advantage of. In this situation it probably has happened

Exactly. And if he really cared about the people that come to see him, he could meet with them in a back room instead of broadcasting them. Because I'm sure a lot of them have no other choice but to go on National television cuz they are manipulated by him and think he is there to help, which could not be farther from the truth. Also it makes me so mad that he threatens to call LAPD against people if they don't go on camera pretty much. It's honestly disgusting and he needs to be shut down immediately especially after the Shelley Duvall interview. Actually that wasn't even an interview that was him being a predator.

YES! This is the exact problem-- if you say you are a psychologist (practically a reality TV demigo, to themselves AND their fans) and ask broken, wounded, possibly suicidal or addicted people, as they are plummeting towards their "bottom" as it is, and you tell them they can be treated like royalty for a few days and be a star on tv as to boot... Well, there is NO WAY you will get a bunch of polite refusals like, “no, thank you, I'm headed to Paris that week for a stay at my pied a terre-- Ta!" No-- not a chance! It is FAR more likely that a bunch of mentally ill people who are SUFFERING in their own lives, will grab at any chance to escape from their own suffering. They may even KNOW that, EVEN THOUGH it is probably going to make their overall lives worse, at least getting pampered by Dr. Phil Show staff will make them feel better for a little while...

Dr. Phil is neither helpful nor a very good counselor. I am like you, Not a fan. Too much drama & showboating for my taste. You, on the other hand, are Superlative, from my perspective. Calling out: polygraphs, MENSA, etc, has been informative & enlightening. Glad you don't have his abrasive, coarse & glib attitude. Bravo, Dr. Grande!

Mart Cichocki He’s not a counselor, he’s a Doctor. He does good work, however, the tv aspect- music and non-effects- can be a bit much. And as far as counselors/therapists, there are competent and incompetent ones. I’ve had both.
He never wanted to help anyone but himslef as I see it. Its entertainment and many people find it entertaining to humilate disabled people.

I went to a taping of his show. During a commercial break the makeup artist came up behind him to powder his shiny bald head. I guess he didn't like being approached from behind because he reprimanded her. His response was significantly disproportionate to the offense, causing us audience members to give each other the side glance.

I’m an msw and I do to
A young man who was an alcoholic was on the show. He said alcohol was made available to him. I was not watching the show but stopped on the channel as the young man was “assisted” on stage by two huge men because he could not walk on his own. He was in tears, red faced, and so ill that an ambulance was in order. Later hearing that alcohol was offered…made me sick to my stomach. I feel they could have killed him.
Dr Phil is an entertainer before he’s a therapist. Getting people to watch his show by being bombastic and unsubstantial is precedent over helping anyone.

Well all I can say is that he irritates the cr$p out of me. He talks AT people and avoids eye contact a lot. I think he is as fake as the day is long. It’s all about his ratings. Almost like a theatrical production going on. Just weird and I avoid his shows like the plague.

“I’m just an old country boy ... “ = I’m trying to disarm you.
“Uh huh” (while you’re speaking) = I don’t believe you, or I’m going to spring a “gotcha” in a few minutes. Wait and see.
“Do you want to be happy or do you want to be right?” = Right fighting is wrong, even though I have never once admitted on any show that I could be wrong. So do as I say, not as I do.
I’m sure you’ve found many more. I’ll start watching now.
All of these are examples of pandering to an audience to get viewers. His audience exists mostly of simpleton, low to average educated folks. These people embrace the “ah-shucks, I’m a simple country boy” act. Also keep things black:white, right/wrong terms because it’s easier for the audience. . Things that have gray-area or multiple variables relating to mental health conditions or a problem do not do well in a tv time slot, so keep it simple. Claiming to be the expert works because compared to everyone else watching and guests on the show he is MORE of an expert. Make sure to keep your audience dumb and get people on the show that are way to manipulate. And boom! You get ratings!

The way he exploited Shelley Duvall was beyond low. He should've been jailed. Shelley was an amazing actress that I believed it was a complete set up for ratings.

Oy Friggin Vey! I remember that. I remember Phil having Gene Simmons from Kiss shame a wannabe rock star living with his parents. Gene mostly urged the kid or whomever to formulate more realistic goals and have a plan B. Made sense but the shame, humiliation,and bullying tone was evident not to mention the condescension on the parts of both host and guest towards the hapless I won't say patient but maybe unrealistic hobbyist. Self aggrandizing at it's worst.
I feel sullied and soiled after watching McGraw. That's fine. Imagine if I felt at home there. I'm curious about what pro Phil people think about his brand of shame therapy.
I have waited for so long of somebody who speaks out about Dr. Phil. He is so miserable and humiliating that I sometimes could have screamed. Just found your channel. Very interesting. I have never liked dr phil. Maybe my observation is off, but i have often felt like he enjoyed humiliating many of his guests who were honestly seeking assistance and even some that weren’t. If that makes me want to vomit, I can only imagine what & how bad those guests felt. They didn’t deserve that.
Having been raised by a narcissist that's what jumps out to me with Dr. Phil. Someone will be trying to tell their story or make a point and it's grabbed and flipped into a yay Dr. Phil opportunity.
Phil's show is all about him, "look at me, look at me". There is something wrong with how he takes his wife at the end of his show. Hasn't she a life outside of him. He preys on vulnerable people to bolster his very over inflated ego.

I have been watching Dr. Phil for many years. I am a Marriage and Family Therapist Associate. I have noticed that he can some times be a bully, he is arrogant. He takes credit for what his sponsors do -- he does not pay for the therapy that he sends the guests on his show too. I don;t agree with some of the advice that he gives on his show--he comes off as being very Narcissistic. He can be a bore with all his patty himself of the back and bragging. Tired of his sells talk about his sons books and Dr. On Demand, and his wife's Robins beauty products.

He rarely has Black people on his show and I suspect he believes them to be way to complicated and just cant deal with them.

She was a bored housewife, she would talk with her other bore white friends about the show "Can you believe how CRAZY that chick was?". She'd watch a wardrobe makeover show to identify what was wrong with each outfit, then watch Maury to scoff at the cheaters and liars, then watch Dr. Phil to identify the "crazy" person's condition. Watching human suffering was a fun game for her on-par with laughing at someone's leopard print '70s bellbottoms. I think that's the demographic who most enjoys Dr. Phil.

I see his shows as pure business: the facilities where guest s are send to. I don't think he pays one dime for that, on the contrary. His books that he promotes all the time, the lady from the pharmaceutical industry has 15 minutes to sell her products, doctor on demand, etc. It is a shameless enrichment of himself, his wife, his son.

Where I come from there is the semi-humorous term "sledgehammer mechanic" indicating a lack of finesse, care, and knowledge, instead using brute force.
Some say "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing" (the Dunning-Kruger effect).
Much knowledge can be even more of a dangerous thing if held by a malevolent mind.
Exposing charlatans is always a good thing, except to the charlatans, but then again they ask for it with their words and actions.

Your thoughts on Dr Phil are understandable, as the show has implied ties to your own field. A big thing to remember is that "Dr Phil" is a tv show; the real therapist was Phil McGraw, who voluntarily gave up his license to practice and instead continued as a tv talk show host. The income potential for tv hosts is much larger than forensic psychologists. He took what he had to work with such as the Dr. title, the Texas attitude, the years of learning psychological lingo, his success at "reading" people as a jury consultant, and a friendship with Oprah and turned it all into a highly watched show. The thought that licensed therapists would take away lessons from a tv show is as scary as Gordon Ramsey providing management training to culinary students.

You nailed it. Dr. Phil is in the entertainment industry and provides useful reality check advice to guests along with recommended professional follow-up care. Viewers benefit to the degree they enjoy the show’s entertainment value and perhaps recognize and acknowledge similar behavior patterns in their own lives. That’s about all you can expect from a nationally broadcast TV program. The real question is why anyone would want to appear on the show and expose their problems to millions.
I always found it troubling that he takes sides when “treating” his patients. That has never been helpful especially for the person whose side he doesn’t take.. I think they’re probably deeply troubled and seeing an “authority” figure be against them will probable make it all worse
I have always been confused with Dr. Phil. I was under the impression that he met Oprah during her defamation case with the Beef industry. I was told that he was her jury consultant.
