- We gave up paper towels completely…then Winnie got sick all over our house so we kept a roll tucked away just in case. Now that she abandoned us, I guess Jason’s been dipping in to them. Time to buckle down.

You forgot people like me the balancers those who recycle but also dont go overboard we also learn old skills but understand the balance of nature instead of throwing away our guts and unwanted carcases from a good hunt we throw it in a pit a mile or two away from the campsite so other animals can feed themselves through the winter we make some of our clothes but buy other clothes as well we even prepare for emergincies see the balancers are a bit of everything yet are more normal and usually keep out of others business and try not to push their beliefs on others i mean we prep and prepare for the eventual emergancies because weve been screwed by government agencies in a crisis before and decided to take intiative of preparing for round two with mother nature

I did this for 6 years. It takes some effort but it's possible. Chicken bones and Qtips were the only thing we couldn't reduce, reuse, recycle. I started trash service again bc i was tired of hauling smell recycling in my car.
If you pressure cook the chicken bones they'll get soft enough to crush and then you can add them to your compost 😁 I had to give up on the zero waste concept too because it turned my house into an organized mess. I didn't need 60 recycled glass tomato jars and the amount of other things I saved to reuse took over the kitchen/closets.

Honestly the biggest thing to help the Zero Waste concept is actually corporate buy in. A bottle deposit system like Germany has at grocery stores would go kilometers towards reducing food packaging waste, and can also preclude the "What do I do with the twelfth tomatoe paste jar?" question.

I feel like this "zero-waste" trend doesn't account for the fact that whether it's in your house or in a landfill, it still exists... AKA A lot of crunchy folks sound concerning-ly like hoarders, or soon-to-be hoarders... Learning to throw things away has helped me create less garbage than trying to keep everything that no longer has its use in my life, and it's so worn out that it would have little to no use in anyone else's either. But maybe I'm not the average person.

Yeah the responsibility has to be on the companies using plastic containers and wrappers.
If there are no alternatives there isnt much the average person can do.
With chickens and compost I got it down to one garbage bag every 3 months. I moved and no longer have chickens and produce more waste now. It really wasn't hard to reduce and it's fewer trips to the dump. You can choose products with less packaging, they are out there
The point is that you stop purchasing any one-time use substances in the first place, like packaging or paper tissues.
That being said, even when throwing stuff out it should be re-purposed (if in viable condition), scrapped (metal), composted, or recycled rather than thrown out
no your right, zero-waste is very difficult to do, even off grid farms who never need to go to the store, still has some sort of waste. or else you wouldnt see those fields with TUNS of junk in 1 corner.. just saying.. i never knew clean until i lived with a clean freak, and honestly, its allot better than hording. because i lived with a Dirty Freak, ,and that was no good.
I fully support people who want to be as close to zero waste as possible. I only take issue when they force their ideas on those around them.

our ancestors weren't zero waste, but back then we didn't have plastic (or at least it was much more rare) and lower class were very resourceful, therefore much less waste ended up in landfill

Got noticed by the feds, so I said I was preparing a business which they, of course, will allow because that means tax money, but I had to go through with it. Didn't want a lot of smelly trash so I accepted windmill blades instead from wind farms but the company that owns the windmill farm isn't giving me bad windmill stuff but windmill blades that are no longer receiving tax credit write offs but since they can renew their tax credit buy prematurely replacing stuff that's what they are doing and generating a TON of non recyclable fiberglass compound material. And the worst part is they keep saying they will pay for the use of the land "Soon" but it's been years and they keep bringing more and while it's not smelly trash there are a lot of snakes and now mosquitoes in the area and this is right next to some houses like right across the fence next to some houses. Help!
Edit Edit-The county got involved and wants that money but the fly by night company that the windmill farm owner made just declared bankruptcy so they wouldn't have to pay a dime but it wasn't a real company but a front to protect the windmill guys from legal action.

Well, I stopped caring. There are more blades coming in, but no one knows what's going on anymore. They are not reusable. Every single one is cut in thirds with a chainsaw or something and longer than a bus. We did manage to save a couple, some nice people put art on them and we put them up on the highway near the ramps so people could have something nice to look at when they leave or enter Sweetwater.

Google erased the location from the map. It just looks like a poorly done attempt to made the ground look tilled. There's still some blades visible that were across the fence and in this one guy's business. Those were left alone but I guess Google didn't want anyone to know there's bad parts to Green energy. One of the guys that had bought a load of blades was saying there was a ton of dead birds around the windmills. There is some blood on the blades that get bought in. It washes off after the first rain. Didn't think anything of it really. It's just birds. A lot of missing body parts and there were coyote everywhere. Crazy to think that many birds could litter the ground while coyotes are having a buffet. Bird holocaust?

.what about medical waste like bandages...and this isn't everyone and probably not this family but I have open wounds that require big bandages...aren't making or reusing them for anything I promise. I do reuse the wraps ( ace bandage part) for as long as I can
