  • 🚗💨 A reckless episode of dangerous driving at the Tesco car park in Culverhouse Cross, #Cardiff, has led to the sentencing of 18-year-old Alex Mason from #Merthyr.
In an incident caught on CCTV, Mason, behind the wheel of a Mazda MX5, was seen performing perilous "donuts" with not only a passenger inside but another individual precariously perched on the car's exterior. As if this wasn't enough, another clip reveals the teenager performing a near-catastrophic emergency stop, just inches away from a circle of spectators.
This daredevil act, aptly described as "utterly stupid" by the judge, was part of an unregulated "car meet" event (on July 2) that drew a large crowd of 1,000 people and 400 cars. Tesco staff promptly alerted the police, leading to Mason's arrest. While he acknowledged his participation, it's worth noting the court also learned of Mason's previously unblemished character.
Defence barrister, James Evans, attempted to shed light on the mindset of young men like Mason, suggesting they "see the world differently." In a rather grave response, Recorder Benjamin Blakemore pointed out the life-threatening risks of such behaviour, stating: "If he keeps driving as he did in that video Mr Evans he won't reach old age."
Although Mason has commendably completed his GCSEs and is on the brink of qualifying as a bricklayer, his actions were inexcusable. Recorder Blakemore commented on the gravity of the situation, highlighting that Mason's actions were not only "ridiculously dangerous" but could've had fatal consequences.
Mason's judgement? An 18-month community order which entails 180 hours of unpaid work, an eight-day rehabilitation activity requirement, £420 in costs, and a two-year driving ban.

Doing donuts in an overloaded miata does deserve some recognition.
Dont get the "he almost did x and y" part of it, however. Any and all drivers do "almost x and y" every time we drive. This is due to the nature of driving with unintentional variables.
Hard to see how a conviction on "driver almost did x and y" stands up in a court of law.
