If someone thinks The World According to Garp ia a red flag book they are not reading it correctly. Yes, Garp is terrible to women in the first half of the novel, but to show chracter growth an author has to first present us with a flawed character. Garp finally figures out how to treat women, and because of this becomes a successful writer.

You should read The Great Gatsby. Mostly to see if you can pick up the flaws. It will only take you four hours to read. The book is beautifully written as far as the way Fitzgerald puts the words together. I have a problem with some of the coincidences. I’d be interested in your interpretation-mine is very different than what most people come up with. And I disagree with Maureen Corrigan, Georgetown (16% acceptance rate-Uck) professor who goes wild on this book and thinks that Nick is an unreliable narrator. No way. I’ve read Infinite Jest, and it did not make me want to travel back in time to the mid-90s and become a man. Probably the most elegant prose I’ve ever read, but that novel is not for everyone. A reader needs to do a lot of prep work first-read the Wallace biography, read The Crying of Lot 49, read some of Wallace’s nonfiction work, buy a lot of post-it notes. The most embarrassing book on my shelf is The Five People You Meet in Heaven. What a pile of (expletive deleted.)
