- At Smithsonian Exhibits, Adam meets with head of production Chris Emo, touring his shop and learning how he and his team fabricate cases and other items to display artifacts safely at Smithsonian museums! (Adam ALSO gets a look at their dust retrieval system, which looks like it's right out of the film Brazil.)

i want to read the paper on glue...
When “Happy as a kid in a candy shop” just won’t do....”Happy as Adam in a Fabrication shop” should suffice.
Best description ever! on point
Right on, Adam is the epitome of what us nerds strive for.
Two weeks later in Adam's shop: "Look at this new machine to create grooves in acryllic to fit together in this system! Now I can create the most awesome display cabinets!"
Jajajajaj for sure
Prophetic
*Standard manufacturing stuff*
Adam: Wow
It’s an important distinction that is lost on most RUclips fans. Adam creates decorative objects from random materials of choice, as one would for a theme restaurant, a temporary event, a film or tv show. These items only have enough precision to make sure the parts assemble correctly then they are decorated with random finishes as desired. The Smithsonian is tasked with restoring objects with their original materials to their original operational precision’s, or creating new items that must precisely fit the requirements of other organizations.
Adam doesn’t create even at the retail toy level, he creates folk art, which is fine but it’s not the Smithsonian which is why he’s amazed and delighted.
@@DoctorShocktor I know, it's just a joke ; )
@@DoctorShocktor - i find that a bit harsh, a lot of items he's shown us over the years seem to have a lot more craftsmanship and attention to detail in them than run-of-the-mill retail stuff. Of course he rarely, if ever, has to deal with the problems of mass production, but I don't think making a mold for some shitty action figure is necessarily more involved, or interesting.
@@DoctorShocktor I take it more as respect for the simple fact it's THE SMITHSONIAN!
Naturally the voice in my head read that like Owen Wilson
Please STOP putting call out cards over your video during the last few moments. These moments are often interesting, but unviewable. Add ten seconds of a blank frame at the end for your links. Again. Please!
Why are you upset about a youtube video?
Adam Savage!!! I'm a huge fan!! I really miss mythbusters.
Loving these Smithsonian videos. Imagine just wandering through the archives of all the stuff they don’t even have on display! A treasure trove
We got to do a little bit of that, and it was as amazing as you are imagining.
PrismGuy my daughter worked in the “Attic” for a summer
It’s true, I interned at the American History museum, and in the afternoon I would spend time in the different collection departments. It’s so wild. Saw the muppets, C3PO costume, the armory... it’s amazing
Exactly!!
The largest museums typically ONLY display about 5% of their collection at any time!
@Adam Savage's Tested. I hear they have an exhibit on Bob Ross. I would love for you to see it and share it with us if possible.
Adam Savage meets Bob Ross = creates a singularity of positive creation causing the next big bang.
@@jubb1984 Happy little viewers
the NYT did a video two month ago: ruclips.net/video/rDs3o1uLEdU/видео.html its the before the Smithsonian, but its more info :)
I actually interned at the American History museum as a fabricator, and a lot of the museums have their own fabrication shop. Ours was in the basement (joy). I learned so much from the talented craftsmen at the Smith. Would have loved to meet Adam!
His excitement reached a new all time high !
The Museum of Natural History put out a series of videos following their restoration of their taxidermy dioramas, covering everything from the painted murals to reproductions of vegetation, and even the restoration of the taxidermied animals themselves. Would love to see Adam visit that workshop!
'lets have a quick overview of the shop'
immediately fascinated by the first machine he sees.
I need more of Adam going to fabrication and machine shops in my life. You can really feel his passion and excitement!
You are my favorite youtuber because you do such cool things!
So jealous, I'd love to explore all the workshops he visits..
My dad worked at the Smithsonian for 20 years and interacted with those guys pretty often.
I work in a factory making outdoor insulated cladding and doors using many of the same machines. The issues with the dust extraction system are very relatable. :D
WHAT AN AWESOME JOB!!!
“Meh, just basic stuff” lol
Awesome geek out session!!
Good stuff, Adam
Any plans on a Dark Crystal video? Feels like something you guys would be interested in.
Not even a minute in and Adam slips into kid mode. I already like the video.
So cool!!
Thank You Adam and crew for getting us a behind the scenes look at the Smithsonian’s fab shop truly a wonderful place to work. I could only imagine the pieces that they have made for display. Thank You so much!!!!!
Slick jacket, Adam!
I wish I got as excited about anything as Adam got about extruded acrylic
Me to 😂
Adam Savage in a machine shop = Kid in a candy store. He's just so giddy and intrigued! :D
02:00 I see a new toy for Adam's Shop. :) But where will it go?
This seems like an awesome job.
Damn that acrylic system would make my life so much easier. Wonder if there is a smaller more home based workshop system.
REALLY want to see Adam visit the restoration shop at the Udvar Hasey center in Virginia. They do a lot of the restoration work for the air and space museum
More show us more!!! :D
Dang...glue is a one way solution! There is no Ctrl Z...what if there was a type of glue that could be manipulated with UV light or something. I feel like there are some products that harden with light but can they soften and be reused?
Leave it to adam to ask the hard hitting questions. Such as where dust gets stuck.
Chris emooooo "mcr starts playing in the background"
Apparently a good pick up line to use on Adam is "Would you like to see my metal shop?"
Adam’s enthusiasm for any kind of manufacturing is endearing and infectious.
As soon as they walked up to those little drawers I just _knew_ Adam would be opening them .
"When the kit hits the bench" words to live by
I imagine what Adam could do with a few thousand square foot warehouse space.
Cool
SWEET!
Does anybody knows where did he gets this stunning jacket ?
Paul Calmejane www.alworden.com/jacket.htm
When I was a cabinet maker we once built a series of museum exhibition display cases (for the Danish National Museum, an exhibit about Queen Margaret the 1st, I recall) - for that we used MDF and lacquers which did not emit formaldehyde or organic solvents or anything. I guess they also use that kind of special materials here?
What's wrong with the camera person? Are they even listening to what Adam is talking about? Really wanted to see the sawdust exhaust pipes he was talking about but the camera person just stayed affixed to Adam. Have noticed they've done something like that before....really annoying.
I don't know about the rest of you but I swear as Adam was looking at the plexiglass "groove" maker there was a bubble above his head that said I WANT ONE!.
I applied for a machinist position. Didn't get hired. FOMO-ing on all the fun collaborative challenging projects 😞
24 frames a second is just so incredibly unconformtable to look at while doing panning shots or movements (too quickly).
I just don't get why they continue doing it. Artistic choices? A video-editor must clearly see that it is not the right thing for these videos.
Adam you should moddle a work shop after the Smithsonian shop . CLEAN ! OPEN ! NO CLUTTR !
Pls bring mythbusters back
The Frank System is INCREDIBLE!
You're like a talking phallus
Nice shot of the CNC plasma cutter... 🤔
Yeah, it looks like B-roll shooting was not on the agenda.
and the air filtration system which they spoke about for close to a minute....
If you look hard at 4:44, you can see Ben Stiller running by in the background in a security uniform.
I wonder if they take request for a project
Dream job working there.
Mechanical pencils as an accessory? Seems society may have acted rashly in its crusade against bullies.
Great video
You should take a tour of a Pennsylvania based set builder Tait Towers. They are makers who build most of the rock and roll touring sets and stages and they have embraced digital fabrication to the max.
Where are they located and do they mind tour requests from plebs? :)
Ron Zawora if you search RUclips you can find a v show about Tait from a few years back. There aren’t a on of episodes and it doesn’t get super technical but it does give you a cool inside look.
I was waiting for the Ikea joke... or reference... :)
I wish you could buy those modular, flat-pack display cases off-the-shelf in various sizes. I'm guessing the aluminum extruded pieces are specifically designed and made for the Smithsonian?
The colour grading of this video is just tasteful
This it like porn for makers/fabricators.
You can’t go opening their drawers.
Anyone know who makes the acrylic grooved display box gear?
Can't find anything similar online.
For shame, you didn't visit the Enterprise exhibit
Do you have an area where dust gathers best? Adam is so excited
I absolutely love seeing other shops and how they work. I'm a production manager at a fairly small sign shop where we build most things in house. From getting ideas to better utilize my 4x10 cnc to working with my metal guys, streamlining is half the battle!
Yea I like when Adam makes stuff to. You have to have the space and time and 💰 money. New book 📖 idea 💡 is build it book. Not so much your suits and costumes but re creating space ship 🚀 models so anyone can own a piece of movie 🎥 magic without breaking the bank on things. I think on alternatives if you don’t own this try or use this to get the same effect.
This is an awesome idea for a video, thanks for making it!
Wow.. what a lovely shop!
Just curious about the use of silicone sealer at 7:02, doesn't it outgas as well?
Hi!!!
I've waited all my life to meet you!... Acrylic extrusion machine!! Leave us in peace now!...
Is this the start of Adam's display cabinets being replaced? I'd miss the customized Billy's ^^
They can run a smaller crew like that because several of the smithsonians have their own independent in-house fabrication shops. While people often say “The Smithsonian” as if it was all one united institution each museum runs pretty independently and there is actually very little communication between say Air and Space and Natural History
Hope you brought your sleeping bag and pillow because I don't think Adam's going to be leaving anytime soon!!
This is awesome! I can remember looking at the hope diamond, and i couldnt help but wonder who made the display lol..
It makes sense that they'd make their own stuff, but it never occurred to me lol
Hello there!
General Kenobi
Adam just saw his new toy for making cases. His eyes just lit up!
I love these videos...but please please please start using a lens with a better focus range.
Every time I see Adam wearing that blue jacket I fall in love again haha
Excellent way to see the difference between the folk art that Adam creates and a restoration facility that must create and restore items to critical precisions. Both have their place.
"break the parts out" With his pronunciation of "out," he sounds Canadian.
"I wrote an essay on why I hate glue" yeah but have you tried letting it dry on your hands and peeling it off?
I would say visit a huge foundry/forging shop...
Acrylic is organic...
Very Cool stuff !!!!!!!
That shop used to be my dream job, but the likelihood of even getting an opportunity to apply is so rare that I decided the only practical option was to change course. Still glad to see where the shop is today and that they're getting more opportunities to grow and improve how they work.
There are other independent companies that do almost the exact same work, that are easier to get into too, you could use as experience to work your way toward this shop. I worked for a company called D&P (design and production) in northern Virginia that did this exact type of work for museums.
A great walkthrough. Thanks for taking us with you.
Boring...😴
Where's part 2?
7:41 You got really excited for that poplar.
I miss going through those back rooms with my grandma when I was little. Good times!
Overexposed...
Where can I get Adams jacket from this video?
Still want an effin' one wheel!!!
Oh sorry wrong factory.
Very interesting! You don’t think every case is bespoke for every exhibit
A groove in the edge of material is called a rabbit.
How do I get to work there?
This is cool
Wow!!!!!!!!!
