    I guess it's hard for Mr. Sondheim to say that West Side Story is a miracle: an incomparable masterpiece--acting, dancing, the music. It shook up the world. It played in the same theatre in Paris for either four or five years!!! I'll NEVER tire of looking at the original film--but I look forward to see what the new team has done. They already have the script, the concept, the dancing and music and so forth--they just have to DO IT RIGHT. And I wish them all the best. Btw, Mr. Sondheim, thanks for those lyrics--they're brilliant and they will last.

    “What keeps the theatre alive is re-interpretation”. This one line alone should be used to stop those complaining that there’s a remake 60+ years after the orginal one. I loved the original one, but is has its faults, and I’m looking forward to seeing this one. Every time there’s a cast change on stage there’s a reinterpretation of the characters and how they sing the songs. It shouldn’t be any different for film, appreciate that we’re getting these great musicals filmed today with new actors and known directors who will bring this incredible piece to a brand new audience and keep it alive for many more years to come. To quote him again “God willing in another few years there will be another new interpretation”.

    • @djjnonya2170
      @djjnonya2170 2 года назад

      Creating and panding to policital groups to change elements to support their agenda isn't re-interpreting something it's altering the actual source material to the detriment of the core story. I wish I could appreciate this and was looking forward to it for a year having seen the first revival 5 times and the second revial once, as well as the original film and every touring company. But unfortunately I'm not going to see it because I have learned that they using the film to push political narratives that were not part of the story from it's inception. Again, that's not a re-interpretation. That's destroying it. Hollywood destroys everything it touches because they can't keep their ignorant politics to themselves.

    • @themightyp
      @themightyp 2 года назад +2

      @@djjnonya2170 But with every version you will have seen there would have been a re-invention, every time a cast member is replaced the character itself is altered to their interpretation, every time a different director directs something they put their interpretation, it is literally reinvented constantly. If it weren’t it wouldn’t survive. Things have to remain relevant and keep bringing in new audiences. Personally I love seeing other peoples takes on classic musicals and plays. Imagine if nobody ever did a Chekhov or a Shakespeare or an Ibsen ever again because people only want to see the original and won’t accept any other version. Look at the incredible reinvention of Company that took the West End by storm and as i now doing the same on Broadway - it actually works better in places than the original, all because of reinvention, and all with Sondheims blessing.

      @@greens294 it's not what I "think" their agenda is it's what their agenda clearly "IS". You need to stop tuning out the not so subtle agendas that are tearing apart the fabric of our nation for ENTERTAINMENT. Because that's what this is. Entertainment and nothing more. It is completely non-essential and if you are trying to tell me that there isn't an agenda at play here to portray the Jet's as racists and the Latinos as victims as well as pushing characters being transgendered which adds no value to the story then you are blind.
      Tony doens't want to get involved because he is afraid of going back to prison not because he found a better life in staying out of the nonsense. It's definitely a watered down ruined version of the actual story that focuses on self centeredness. Content wise it is NOT an improvement over the original. Perhaps in the production values but that isn't actually factored into the worth or value of a film like this in my opinion.
      I would rather watch a bootleg of a stage version to see the intact story that doesn't focus on gender equality and push narratives about how essential and hard working immigrants are. That's political fodder in this day and age and if you don't see that you are blind. That essentially is NOT what West Side Story was about. It was about hating people that are different or at odds with each other. It's not another opportunity for Stephen Spielberg to shove his liberal politics down everyone's throat.
      It worked better when it was a simple message. Trying jam in every "woke" checkbox to appeal to the dumbed down general population isn't a net gain.

    • @greens294
      @greens294 2 года назад +2

      @@djjnonya2170 minus making a single character transgender (which I think made that character more interesting), the portrayal of the Jets and Sharks was fairly similar to the play. Jets were fairly racist in the original movie too. But much like the new movie, they are at some point redeemable. I think you fail to realize that most Hollywood films through the years had a message to convey. And I’m sure most of those messages you would consider part of a “liberal agenda” if you looked back on it. You really think the original West Side Story had none of that? You think it had nothing to say? You say it’s about people who hate each other for being different, but somehow don’t see how that is a study of racism. That kinda makes you a little blind. Or at least selectively blind.
      I also strongly disagree with you on Tony’s back story. I think it was much stronger in the newer version. It doesn’t sound like you saw the movie, but there is more to it than what you wrote. If you haven’t seen the movie, you really should abstain from criticism, since you don’t exactly know what you’re talking about.
      And if you plan to overlook the production value, then it sounds like you’re bound to hate this movie. That’s like going into a musical, and refusing to acknowledge the music.
      I genuinely think you need to calm down and not overthink when it comes to a movies messaging. Most movies have always had a point to make, you just didn’t think too much about it before because the messaging is often something pretty agreeable. As is that of this newest West Side Story. Things are just so political now, conservatives (assuming you too) are so sensitive to movies/music/art that portray racism for what it is.
      So yea, get a grip dude

    Saw it this past week. It was good, not great, but good. I won’t get into the casting decisions because I don’t know enough to comment. But, the play was alright. It was too truncated for my taste....as if directed by someone used to doing commercials rather than long form things. The dancing was top notch, the singing strong.....and I liked a lot of how they used the video wall and the two rooms cut into it. There were a couple of times the video wall took something away from the dancing on stage, but other than those instances I liked it. The remake is absolutely amazing. BTW, I'd like someone to reboot Jaws because it has its flaws (Spielberg would probably agree in private). The choreography, dancing and screenplay are out of this world. The main actor was criticized but he's a top notch young actor who did great. Even the extra 10lbs he could have lost works shows he's no longer hard like Riff and just wants love like a little baby. The actress who played Maria knocked it out of the park along with the supporting cast. It's going down as the most underrated movie of all time. If anyone says otherwise than they don't know anything about movies.

      Agree!!; but the young Actor, Ansel Elgort who played Tony did NOT need to lose ANY weight!
      He's usually a bit on the skinner, lanky, but VERY tall side, though still VERY hot and SUPER good looking!
      However, in THIS version he actually GAINED some Muscle and bulked up a little bit in the RIGHT, CONVINCING way!!
      He was ABSOLUTELY perfect as Tony looks wise and TRULY PHENOMENAL in the role, Singing, Dancing AND Acting!!
      A TRUE Triple THREAT!! 🙂😉

    Nothing against re-interpretation. But, people can love it or despise it. That said, for this show as re-interpreted, I hated it and would have walked out at intermission if they had one. My wife felt the same, as did the people sitting in front of us, and the people sitting behind us.

      Cruz Gomes, for me there are lots of reasons. If I want to see video on a screen, I’ll go to a movie. That was the most annoying and distracting aspect. The singing was ok, but I wasn’t a fan of the interpretation of songs except for the song ‘America’. Choreography was ok, but I thought the original was more thrilling and new at that time. I also disliked all the tattoos. Finally, I also couldn’t distinguish between the two gangs since they appeared to have the same ethnic diversity, which was unlike the original production. It’s just an opinion, so please take no offense.

      not sure of the relevance. Are you saying that he only can have linear thinking or are you trying to push some hidden agenda that isn't there that you are trying to create. you are indicating that if you label one remake as a "new Interpretation" because it's updated then you have to have the same perspective about every updated show? Because that is absurd. Or are you fishing for a false flag to create victimization when there is none? What exactly are you trying to imply my dear. Please come right out and say it instead of trying to hide your meaning which isn't that subtle. Why don't you go try to dig up some faux outrage somewhere else.

      Arachne97 ROMEO & JULIET had Montagues and Capulets stabbing each other in the streets.
      So WSS will always have the violence of its time.
      That’s what concerns me about the new Spielberg movie. Two stabbing with switchblades won’t be the extent of the violence. And, while I’m on the subject, I doubt Maria in her slip and Tony without a shirt will be our clues they made love. I have to KNOW what’s in this film before I go. I passionately love the original. I can pretty much watch it on MUTE and say the lines. It’s classic, wonderful, perfect.

Sondheim keeps the conversation on the general level for good reason, for the sake of the art. He didn't stoop to bashing that movie version of his Sweeney Todd either even though the only member of the cast that could carry a tune without a bucket was the barber's apprentice.
