This is my first confidence fly. I'm new to tying and made this for my trip to NC. Used this the entire weekend. And then again when I came back to NJ. Caught loads of fish with this single fly, including brookies. I did use it on a dry dropper too. Fantastic!
Great video! I did laugh a bit at the 'If you turn over rocks you see a lot of dull brown insects, so I'm going to tie a nymph with bright flashy green and an orange unlike anything you would ever see under a rock.'
😂😂😂 Seriously!! It is rather ironic.. lol I start with the nymph colors and tones and tie a bunch that way and then I spice it up a bit and add hot spots and flash that get them noticed. The ones with flash catch some serious fish though! I say make em both ways and see what works for you!
Thanks for all the great info. I watched your whole course on euro nymphing to learn the basics and im ready to test my knowledge at my favorite river in maine in a couple of weeks. For now im trying to build ul my fly box with your tying videos, keep up the amazing work.
An absolutely easy to follow instruction video. I’m fishing this Friday on the Genesee river in New York State close to the Pennsylvania border. I’m giving some lessons to a friend that wants to learn to fly fish. I’ll be showing him this video because not only did your instruction make it easy but what this fly represents. Thanks.
Thank you! If you are doing any nymphing and your buddy is new to fly fishing.. have him watch my Euro Nymphing Series. ruclips.net/p/PLuLwf7ym7i7bre38GWqk0pXZggydq3Z5m
That fly is a killer!!! That is my go to fly and seems to be successful in almost every creek in my area!! Whatever dropper I pair with it, never gets the attention the the olive flash with hot spot.
Yeah... I hated the nail polish method and waiting for it to dry and then when it dried it would sink into the slot and never look right. UV Resin is way better!
Since i have found your vids i have been crushing the big browns on the west canada. Sunday i slammed a 22" rainbow in that creek. First bow i had caught since the early 90s. Thank you for all your knowledge you share with us. Big props.
Nice! Congrats on the big bow!!! I explored up "that creek" only once and I didn't go very far. I rarely make it out that way to fish these days but it would be fun to explore there some time.
YES I DID! Good eye! I don't think I got the one you linked but I got a similar one. It's been very eye opening as to the difference in weights in my flies. My sexi bomb is so much heavier than my other flies 😂 This fly is the lightest fly I tie.
@@WhiteDogTrailCompany BTW, I think I am getting good at using Perdigonmania strips. They are quite fragile so can't use any tools to wrap them, but humid fingers help a lot. I decided to not give up on them as they have such an amazing collection of color or material (translucent, UV...). Hope all is well. Looking FWD to part 2 video of "fly selection". Is it coming soon?
love the fly - thanks. I don't trout fish anymore (living in southern Illinois), but I still love to tie - I make crappie jigs and bluegill flies. This one will be added to my collection.
I always thought these little, smooth looking Perdigons wouldn't be so catchy. Since this weekend I know they are. Saterday (23 July '22) here in the Čech Republic, in the shop of Jan Šiman, I met Joao Abreu from Portugal. Joao is owner and managing director of Perdigomania. Like the name of the company makes you suspect they make Perdigons. That Saturdayafternoon we went fishing together and to try and convince myself he gave me a couple of his Perdigons. Just an hour later I was more than convinced these things are just crazy. I used them as the pointer under a floating dropper. To make it short, within an hour I had a couple of takes and caught some rainbows and brown trout. Thank you Joao, thank you Perdigons. Sure I'm going to tie a lot of these things. Greetings and tight lines 🎣 from the Čech Republic 🇨🇿.
That’s a great little pattern! I can see how the thin profile would be successful in catching a bunch of fish in creeks and streams. Thanks for sharing!

Yeah!! That is a really good suggestion for a summer pattern!!! Thanks! When you have a tough time getting rises when trying to match the hatch sometimes ya just gotta go big and throw a big hopper and watch em smack it!
Would love to see some fly tying videos on your favorite jig streamer patterns coupled with the technique you use in fishing with them. Thanks for all the amazing videos. Tight lines
Just subscribed now after watching a couple of very practical videos & feeling your passions to share your decades long experiences in rivers with fishes. Looking forward to watching you in rivers running through. Thanks
Great video, been home in covid isolation here in New Zealand. I have watched most of your videos over the last few day and am getting started with some Euro nymphing. Keep up the great work
This seems to be an excellent pattern that is easy to tie up. I’m going to be tying some up when I can get my hands on some Solarez in black. Thanks for the video!
You can still do the nail polish but the black solarez is way better! I just got some more off amazon for some hot spot colors (orange and fl red)! Can't wait to try those too!!!
Thanks! I like to provide a lot of detail and context for things. If you haven't seen the fly selection video I just released I'd recommend checking it out. I hope to have part II out in a few weeks. Part II will go into a lot of detail on choosing flies for certain conditions.
That's a great looking fly. I haven't fished that style much here in nz, but in saying that I was given a couple that were very similar to yours but had a pink bead. They definitely caught fish. Thanks for sharing.
I'm definitely doing fly tying videos more regularly these days. It pushes me to explore and fish more fly patterns and I get a lot of great ideas from people. By the way... did you see you won the drawing for the Hat? Send me an email to bryan_spinner@yahoo.com or message me on Instagram @whitedogtrail and I can get that to you. I have a few options for you chose from. Thanks for the support!
I use a bodkin or a needle to place the bead on the hook. I orient the hook in the vise clamped near the eye, hook point up. I slip the bead on the bodkin slot first, pick up the bead in my fingers, align the shaft of the bodkin with the hook point and slide the bead onto the hook.
Excellent video, really looking forward to the soft hackle flies, not a lot of material info out there on soft hackle how to pick and size it to the flies
Yeah... to be honest I don't tie soft hackles much but I won't put out a video unless I feel good about how I'm doing it. So I have some playing and experimenting to do... but it'll be coming for sure!
I had that feedback after launching this video... I just created this fly based on what I liked... but it is very similar to the gasolina which I found out afterward 😂
Nice fly, looks easy to tie. Looking forward to tying some myself and try them on the streams that I fish. Like to experiment with different shades to see what effect they have on my waters!
Love your work! I'm in Australia and only new to the Euro nymphing game, but what I've found over here, is that using a UV-enhanced wing-case colour resin (I use Motor Oil - Gulff), makes a big difference in the number of fish that strike the fly. I guess that the when the fly is deeper, the UV enhancement in the resin makes it more visible. A bit like fishing in deep saltwater with soft plastics like Z-man Motor Oil jerk shads.
Nice looking fly. Looks like it will get down deep fast. I Like hotspot flies. Maybe you can do a tying vid on dry flies that can be used for a dry/dropper setup. Like a Stimulator or Caddis fly. As always I look forward to all your videos. Can’t wait for the next one. Keep up the great job!
That's a good idea Jim! I don't utilize the dry dropper enough! When I've tried it I've had a hard time getting the dry to stay up under the weight of the nymph. It's an area I want to play with more and figure out what I like! Typical stimulators just don't do it for me...not enough float. I think something with significant foam would be important.
Thanks! Have you seen my Euro Nymphing Series? I did a whole Euro Nymphing Series and Volume 3 was rigging multiple flies. Check out that series here. ruclips.net/p/PLuLwf7ym7i7bre38GWqk0pXZggydq3Z5m
@@WhiteDogTrailCompany OH Man, I missed this episode! Thanks, this is helpful. I have been tying a surgeons loop in my main tippet ot the anchor and then off that loop attaching a small piece of tippet to my second fly. I will have to try your method and see... Thanks for the videos.
what about the crystal flash comes in a bag with a zip tie? seems to take alot of wraps to make a body with it..Should I not be using that for perdigon bodies?
I personally wouldn't use crystal flash as a perdigon body. It is very thin as you noted but also a round material which is not ideal. I like the Hends Perdigon Bodies or similar. They're flat so they build an even body and just wide enough to cover the body of the fly effectively.
great video on tying the Perdigon. I may have missed it in a previous video but for euro/tight line nymphing do you make your own leaders or use production tapered leaders?
I 100% make my own leaders. I have a volume in my Euro Nymphing Series on my leader/micro leader formulas which is here. ruclips.net/video/KS2Sv2Y-oK8/видео.html However, I just recorded a new video where I altered my formula by extending the main line of the leader by about 20 more feet and then use a micro loop connection to connect it to the fly line. Keep an eye out for that one in the coming months.
I would probably not try this for steelhead unless else is working. I'm sticking to egg patterns, buggers or stoneflies probably. However, if fishing was really tough I might try some regular nymphs if they've been in the river a while.
I like it for a Perdigon but I've heard of other people using wood duck fibers or dry fly hackle fibers. If you don't have CDL you can definitely find substitutes.
I bought a few rainbow warriors very similar to what you’re tying and I’m new to Fly Fishing would love to win some these things are getting expensive lol
'Great video. Is it OK to use uv nail polish for flies. I enjoy watching your fishing videos. It helps me learn and understand about euro nymph fisging.thanks
Good question! I'm honestly not sure. I've never used them. If you try it, let me know what you think! The real question would be how they coat evenly and how durable they are banging into rocks in the water.
Have you seen my euro nymphing series yet? I did a whole series on Euro Nymphing and Volume 2 were my leader formulas for regular and micro leaders. The playlist for that series is here ruclips.net/p/PLuLwf7ym7i7bre38GWqk0pXZggydq3Z5m Also, the same day I recorded this fly tying video I recorded me retying my leader to more of a micro leader and extending my mainline section to avoid the connection of my fly line and leader going through my guides constantly. I also changed my connection of fly line to leader to a micro loop which is going to make a big difference when it does go through the guides. I should have that video out in the coming months.
One thing I don't understand: This fly is meant to be fished so that the hook is up,Correct. OK but why then is the wing case on the bottom of the fly? Please advise RVV
Devin Olsen actually wrote an article about this specifically and I've seen him address this exact question on his RUclips channel. Yes... they ride point up so the wing case would be on the bottom of the fly. A natural fly in the water will tumble around in the currents so a wing case on the bottom will not matter to the trout. It is rare that you actually see someone tie a fly on a jig hook so that it drifts exactly the right way. I do it this way because you see the gap in the slotted bead there anyway and the wing case covers it. To be honest... I doubt the fish see or care about it at all.
That is correct. Any jig style hook rides with the hook point upward. However, real nymphs often tumble around in the water when they're drifting so adding the wing case on what ends up being the bottom of the fly doesn't really matter in the end.
If you were to tie some perdigons in a couple sizes other than this size, what sizes would you suggest for hook and bead? Great euro nymph video series by the way! Subscribed right away.
Thanks! I would tie them as droppers for the most part in smaller sizes. Probably size 16 (which is what I did in the video), 18 and 20. I think I did a 2.8mm on this size 16. I might stay with that size or drop down a bit smaller for a size 18 and even smaller for the 20. Maybe down to 2.0 or 2.2mm?
If you're just starting out I would start with a fly tying kit such as this one. amzn.to/3OZg2Zh Just start with basic tools. You don't need to drop hundreds of dollars on tools to get started. The basic tools you'll use are a vise, bobbin to hold your thread, whip finisher, hackle pliers, scissors, a bodkin and a threader. The kit linked has all of that. I still use some of the very first tools I ever got for a kit like this. Other things like the vise and scissors you'll want to upgrade as you gain experience. I personally use the Renzetti Traveler Vise and love it... amzn.to/2VuLOB2 Good luck!
Enjoyed this video as well as all your videos. In the future I would like to see a video on reading water. Specifically, I would like to know if some water types would be best to just bypass for Euro nymphing because they would be a waste of time. One stretch of my local stream can be on fire for dry fly fishing, but I have Euro nymphid that area a number of times, when there was not a hatch coming off the water, with no sucess. Move down the road a couple of miles and I have no problem contacting fish with the same nymphs that drew no response at the first location. That one rather large area of a couple hundred yards is loaded with fish but very little to no action with Euro nymphing, why is that?
I did one on how to read water in the winter which is in my Euro Nymphing Series already. I recorded another a few weeks ago that I have to edit that ended up highlighting the differences of finding fish on warm sunny days versus the lower light hours. I was planning on shooting how to read water on pocket water last weekend but I ended up getting sick and had to cancel that trip. I also have a video planned on "When NOT to Euro Nymph" because not every water is good for it. I think certain water absolutely fits euro nymphing and other water does not. And outside of the stretch of water... some conditions may favor euro nymphing and other conditions may not. In general I'm looking for moving water (riffle or run) that has sections where the water slows down (either underneath the fast water or next to the fast water creating seams). Typically the best euro water for me is 2 feet deep to maybe 5 or 6 feet deep. Any deeper than that and it gets tricky to maintain feel. Anyway... I will be release several videos over the next few months that I think will help!
@@WhiteDogTrailCompany Thank you for your lengthy and informative reply. I look forward to your upcoming videos. The stretch of river that leaves me scratching my head is virtually featureless with no well defined seams and almost no surface disturbance, yet it has a reasonable amount of current that forces me to mend my dry fly cast almost every time. The stream is wide, half of which is 1-2 feet of depth and on the better side the depth is 3-4 feet with most of the foam line on the deeper side. If the theory that 90% of the time trout feed subsurface I don't know what these fish are feeding on. After just two months of Euro nymphing under my belt along with two years of watching every RUclips video on Euro that I come across, my best guess is that the slowness of the current simply gives to much time for the fish to inspect my offering, what do you think? I am currently using 5x fluorocarbon for my tippet, do you think 6 or 7x would make a difference?
Based on what you said I'm wondering if the fish are seeing you? The "No surface disturbance" is a tough situation for euro nymphing because you have to get fairly close to fish effectively and in that kind of situation you might be seen by the fish. Calmer water creates spookier fish for sure! Ever try a dry dropper there? Cast from further away and suspend a nymph under the dry? Might be good for that type of water. I have a spot like that on one of my local rivers and sometimes those fish key in on tiny insects and are really tough to catch. I'll drop to long, light leaders (dry fly fishing) to get them. Wouldn't hurt to drop to 6X on the tippet to the fly. But try the dry dropper and see how it goes.
@@WhiteDogTrailCompany Great ideas. i never considered I might be seen by the fish. I always dress drab colors, no white caps here and both shorelines are lined with trees, I thought I was close to invisible. Complicate the flat water surface with my inexperienced Euro casting skills and the possibility of fish seeing me or me not being capable of reaching fish that don't see me makes for a strong explanation for what may be going on. About two weeks ago I was fishing that spot and the dry fly bite was on but although I was getting a lot of strikes, I had very few hook ups, about 80% of my takes resulted in no fish. My friend who is a big advocate of dry-dropper rigs said I should have tried that. My plan was to try that the next time I fished but the next time I went, casting the same flies as I had 3 days earlier, almost every take resulted in a fish. Because of that I never did try running a nymph under my dry fly but I will the next time I'm there just to see if I can attract some fish on a nymph. I think all this is pointing towards what you said earlier in your first response, some water is not suited for Euro nymphing. Thanks for the help, looking forward to your next video. I'll let you know if I have any success.
Definitely let me know how it goes! I've had days like you describe where they take the dry fly but they are not really eating it and you can't hook em! I find that only happens in slow pools where they can toy with you like that. In faster water they have to eat or not eat... there isn't time to mess around 😂 I like faster water sooooo much better than slow water! 🙂

Yeah... to be honest I don't tie soft hackles much but I won't put out a video unless I feel good about how I'm doing it. So I have some playing and experimenting to do... but it'll be coming for sure!
They look really cool and would be neat To give them a try🎣
Thanks!
Nice tie. Looking to find a bunch of euro nymphs to stock my box with.
Thanks! I like this one.
The Gasolina perdigon seems to be the fly of the moment...tied very similar to this but with the Hends PBM 233 tinsel for the body
I had that feedback after launching this video... I just created this fly based on what I liked... but it is very similar to the gasolina which I found out afterward 😂
Love all the content you put out. Thank you for everything! Been absorbing it like a spunge.
Thank you so much! I'm glad you're enjoying the channels!
Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Great videos!
Thank you!
Loving these fly tying vids. Just started getting into euro nymphing because of your videos. Going down the rabbit hole pretty fast haha
😂 Funny how that happens! 😂😂 I really don't think you'll regret it!
Nice fly, looks easy to tie. Looking forward to tying some myself and try them on the streams that I fish. Like to experiment with different shades to see what effect they have on my waters!
Yeah! Exactly! And all it takes is a different thread or body material to make that change.
Son caught a ton of trout at bennett springs state park missouri. Produced 40+ fish over eight hours of fishing.
that's awesome! :)
Awesome 👍🏻
Thank you! 😀
I think I've seen this one called a gasoline somewhere. Very nice!
Interesting.. I just search on that and found a few very similar patterns. I'm pretty sure I'd heard of that before as well.
Love the vids! Keep the fly tying videos going.
Thanks! Will do! 🙂
Cool! I haven't seen that yet! Thanks for letting me know!
I think something with significant foam would be important.
what do you think the chance is that the fish is eating the beads on these perdigons not the body?
I have wondered that before... but I do think the body of the fly is what they're after. I've heard the bead can simulate an air bubble on the fly.
Great video. I would love to see how you rig multiple flies. I have seen a few ways to do it. I am curious about your rigging.
Yeah... just leave a long tag end on the triple surgeon for your dropper. Super easy!
what about the crystal flash comes in a bag with a zip tie? seems to take alot of wraps to make a body with it..Should I not be using that for perdigon bodies?
Nice bit different then mine , will probably combine the two and them up
Cool... good luck!
Awesome video
How about some grasshopper patterns or beatle
Or always looking for ways to make my elk hair caddis better
I've had a lot of suggestions for terrestrials! Great summer and early fall flies. They're on my list to tie for the channel! Thanks!
How would you change this fly for steelhead ?
Bigger? Different color?
Or don’t bother, because other flys would be more effective?
Thanks
I would probably not try this for steelhead unless else is working. I'm sticking to egg patterns, buggers or stoneflies probably. However, if fishing was really tough I might try some regular nymphs if they've been in the river a while.
Love to see a game changer
I really need to get the streamer game going! Thanks for the suggestion!
How important is it to use CDL for the tail? Has it been compared to other tailing materials for sink rate and fish approval?
I like it for a Perdigon but I've heard of other people using wood duck fibers or dry fly hackle fibers. If you don't have CDL you can definitely find substitutes.
I bought a few rainbow warriors very similar to what you’re tying and I’m new to Fly Fishing would love to win some these things are getting expensive lol
Yeah... I end up tying my own to get them the way I want them. But if you use enough of them it ends up being a little cheaper to tie your own.
I’m ready for HARD WATER LAKERS !!!!!!!
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🎣🎣🎣
Hey Now!! 😂 I love ice fishing but the older the get the more I don't like the cold! Hopefully we get a good ice season though!
You KNOW that You Love ❤️ taking people out, to catch those “ Lake Wolves ! “
Happy September and Thank You for Your Content !
✨🎣💫
The tie is fly 😂
😂😂 Thanks!
Would like to see a bit more on leaders for euro style fishing
@@WhiteDogTrailCompany Yes I have it was very good - just looking for more was to make micro leaders and then figure out how to cast them
Nice pattern. Maybe something like a peeking caddis pattern
Yeah... that would be a good one to explore. You guys give me a lot of good ideas!
Does this fly “fish” upside down due to the jig style hook? If so, is the top while tying actually the bottom when fishing?
That is correct. Any jig style hook rides with the hook point upward. However, real nymphs often tumble around in the water when they're drifting so adding the wing case on what ends up being the bottom of the fly doesn't really matter in the end.
Nice one like the hot spot
Thanks!
Recommendation for tying tools?
Have you guys sent out those six Perdigons? Thanks as always
Coming soon! I sorted them out tonight and threw in a Coozie too!
