    I just started tying my own files. I tied 6 of these last week. This morning I caught a fish on this fly. It was the 1st fish I’ve caught on a fly I tied. Thanks for all the help. I couldn’t have done it without your help!

      YES!!! That is what it's all about!!! I still remember the first fish I ever caught on a fly I tied! That is a big deal for a fly fisherman and fly tier. Congrats!

    I've got to say I'm a subscriber on RUclips and I've watched all your euro nymphing videos and they've helped so much. I've gone from catching 2-3 fish on what I thought was a dead fished out stream to catching 13 fish an outing. It might not be a ton for some people but it's amazing to me. Thanks for all the help! Really means a ton

      @@paulconte4234 I had some winter and snapback hats made up last year but they're all gone except 1 snapback hat (the one I wear in most of my videos). I was looking at doing some more. Problem is there are a lot of hoops to jump through to really set up a merch store... and I haven't had time to figure all of that out yet. I do plan on figuring it out at some point since the channel has grown so much in the last year or 2. I've had a fair number of requests for merch but have some work to be able to do it right.

I have been using the Walt's worm with success and a black Frenchy. While I am not ready to start tying my own flies yet, I do find it interesting to watch and learn how it is done. I had a knee replacement last week, but I’m back up and tying a bunch of trout nymphs for when I can get back on the water. What really shows me down is the step of getting a slotted bead on a jig hook. For a simple tie like this, it might be half my time is getting the bead on. I wonder if you have a standard procedure. I have a bead nabbers tweezers with a sliding lock from Jade River, and an angled tip tweezers, also tried using the vise to hold the hook, but it is strangely awkward for me.

    • @WhiteDogTrailCompany

      A hare's ear typically has a tail, gold ribbing and a gold bead if you use one. Not that this fly is really that much different but there is no tail, copper ribbing and a dark bead... In the end they are incredibly similar (as are most nymphs).

    • @WhiteDogTrailCompany

      I haven't done that combination on this fly but lots of fly recipes will use a little peacock herl at the collar. I have no doubt it would catch fish. It tends to be a little delicate and may come undone after a fish a 2 though. I'll often use a peacock ice dub instead of the herl as you won't have to worry about it being delicate.

      I don't have regulations that restrict me from using 2 flies on my rivers. If I had to only use one fly... I would probably go a bit heavier with maybe bigger tungsten beads... or may lighten the leader material and do more of a micro leader so the heavy leader doesn't pull the flies toward you too much.

      I use barbless hooks most of the time so they slide on pretty easy. If you have a barbed hook sometimes the barb can get in the way of getting the hook on. You want the smaller opening of the bead going toward the hook eye. A lot of people use slotted beads for jig style hooks. I don't because of the way I slide the lead wraps into the bead.

      My first ever "bigger" brown came up and ate a March Brown in June on my local river. I swore at the time it was 17" but looking back at a picture it was barely 15" LOL.. Things seem so much bigger when you're younger :)

    Is there a reason you don't use Walts dubbing?

    • @WhiteDogTrailCompany
      @WhiteDogTrailCompany  Год назад

      No particular reason. Any number of dubbings will work well. I'm using the Senyo Laser Dub (Dark Tan) most of the time now. It has a little more flash in it.

    Why would you put a counter sunk bead on a jig hook??....kinda defeats the purpose of a jig hook

    • @WhiteDogTrailCompany
      @WhiteDogTrailCompany  3 года назад

      Countersunk beads actually work well on a jig hook. The point of a jig hook is that the hook point rides up and it most certainly does with the beads I use. I like those beads because I slide the lead up into them and it secures everything nicely.
