The sheer joy of sitting on the floor by the turntable for hours with my brother in the 70's, our albums of such great bands as this spread all around is, listening to vinyl. WOW.
you prolly dont give a shit but if you're stoned like me during the covid times you can stream all the new movies and series on instaflixxer. I've been binge watching with my brother these days :)
Styx..the first band ever to have 4 triple platinum albums in a row. Their music is so emotional and powerful and your reaction was a perfect example of that. I also appreciate the lyrical insight you continue to bring as well. A deeper cut to check out would be Queen of Spades, Castle Walls or Snowblind. Great music from a truly great band.
Sixteen! Good for you. You've got a great, thoughtful way of reacting to these songs. It's nice to see a teenager really paying attention to lyrics, music, and willing to try all sorts of music like this. I was about your age when I first heard this song - so great to see your reaction.
Right on. man, I was 16 when I got into Styx and Rush and all of this great music your getting to know. There will never be an era in music like this again. I like to call it Epic Rock!
I loved your smile when “they climbed aboard their starship”, because I always smile when I hear that line as it was unexpected and a whole new level of possibilities right out of left field. Your interpretation is spot on. I first heard this song in 1978 when I was 15. I think it’s a “song of hope” for those who have most of their life in front of them and a damn good song for the rest of us.
Styx is my favorite band. I would have pegged you as being older. You are wiser than your years. Oh and virgin = the unsailed sea, the place no one has sailed before.
I'm enjoying your journey - you pay much closer attention to the music than many of the reactors in here. My initial Styx recommendations are Crystal Ball, Prelude 12/Suite: Madame Blue, Castle Walls, Blue Collar Man and Queen Of Spades.
100% agree! But make sure to listen to "Prelude 12/Suite Madam Blue" Prelude 12 is intro with 12 string acoustic guitar and sets the mood for Suite Madam Blue.
This is one of those songs that was played to death on the radio way back when. Nice to hear it again after all these years almost sounded fresh again. Thanks!
My first rock concert! 1979 at the Hollywood Sportatorium. They opened with “Grand Illusion” as they usually do. I was 13 years old and it changed my life. I think I paid 8 bucks for the ticket.
From someone twice your years, your take on moving forward with life is amazing and I commend you on being wise, and I hope that you keep that mentality with everything coming in your life!
Renegade is still a staple in classic rock stations, many have found that one catchy over the years. Guitarist Tommy Shaw teamed up with Ted Nugent in 1989 to form Damn Yankees. They had a few hits. I saw them once and they did Renegade. If you want more Styx, I’d suggest Too Much Time on My Hands (Shaw), Prelude 12/Suite Madame Blue (DeYoung), and Blue Collar Man (Shaw). And you really, really need to hear Mr. Riboto even if you don’t do a reaction, lol. Cheers!
You need to listen to a live version of this with Dennis DeYoung. The audience reaction and encouragement from Dennis makes it magical! Styx live is even better than their studio sounds. Try Styx Caught in the Act Live.
I was 18 when this came out. Styx was my best new friend as soon as I heard this. The lyric ‘’we lived happily for ever, so the story goes, but somehow we missed out on the pot of gold’’ was always haunting to me. Three years later I married the love of my life. Lost her to cancer two years ago after nearly 42 years of marriage. Now that lyric truly haunts me.
Can we all collectively agree that you must react to The Edge of Seventeen by Stevie Nicks? Yes, the Stevie from Fleetwood Mac. Dude, you clearly have an old soul in you and I know I'm not the first to tell you that.
Check out the Styx early years songs like "Unfinished Song", "Winner Take All" and "I'm Gonna To Make You Feel It' are absolutely fantastic little gems of music,🎇🎇🎇
my first concert in 1977 at the Boston Garden with the band White Hot seen them 15 times since, I've introduced my son and daughter to them and have taken them to many shows, they still tour today
That whole middle interlude where you said the sound is going back and forth in your headphones that part is left out of the radio version unfortunately and the one I think for MTV which was a live video... that was back when MTV actually showed music videos
I'm amazed by your understanding of this song. Not many your age has the smarts to do so. You are a poet and looks deep into the depths of the words. You've got a new subscriber.
I love that you're digging for meanings in this music from the 70's. We all did that when we were your age! Saved many of us from angst & gave our lives meaning. There will come a time that the feelings are not as intense, but the love of music will never, ever, leave you. I promise!
You are really going to like "Man In The Wilderness" and "Fooling Yourself" from this album, and of course the Title Track, and Castle Walls. This came from a time when many were trying to Create Concept Albums with every song a top tier song, and no fill. When you have great Vocalist(s) and Musicians, all that is left is the proper inspiration. This album cover used to freak my daughter out when She was younger. You want a Great Song "Electricland" by Bad Company, the first band signed to Swan Song Records, Jimmy Paiges' Label.
RIP to original drummer John Panozzo. His brother Chuck plays bass in band. Styx's long time drummer now is Todd Sucherman. An absolute monster of a player. Probably in top 10 living drummers.
You are such an intelligent and insightful young man. Your appreciation of great music, dynamics, lyrics is refreshing! Keep on! You have a very bright future!
Loved all songs involving sailing - Rael, Closer to Home, Come Sail away - the universal theme of adventure, new beginning and entering the unknown were mana for teenagers searching for meaning and answers. Perfect fodder for poets and musicians. This one really hit home with me in its day.
Give Damn Yankees a listen. They're a supergroup with Tommy Shaw of Styx, Jack Blades of Night Ranger and Ted Nugent. The song Come Again is what I would suggest as a first listen.
They toured with the group America. America had a song "Horse With No Name" which was kinda cheesy, but "Sister Golden Hair" wasn't bad. If you are doing individuals, check out some blue-eyed soul like the Righteous Brothers.
@@christophmozure9413 I had just listened to it yesterday and it's such an upbeat, happy song! Once in a Lifetime is great but unusual, Burning Down the House along with a few others.
Quite different from Renegade, eh? I am SOOO GLAD you didn’t pause it right at the transition! You really need that lead in for the impact. You’re the same age I was when this came out. It seems to me like it’s a very “commercially viable” song - can you sense that as you listen to these for the first time? We didn’t have a lot of choices of what to hear growing up, you listened to what the radio decided to play. And not all 70s rock was big hits and bangers, we had plenty of crap too.
A great episode of Freaks & Geeks....Took me back to the 70's where you are at a dance and ask a girl to dance to this song. The first part is nice & slow, but...then it get weird & speeds up! Now you are stuck dancing with this gal and have no idea how to dance to it! AWKWARD!!
I never knew Dennis DeYoung is a Christian. The majority of STYX songs are very clean. G-rated. Never sang about getting laid, and never sang about women being an object. They definitely rock and can be theatrical with their music progressions. “Babe” was/is truly the slow dance song for a teen age, girl like I was in the 70’s. STYX got me through Elementary School in the 70’s. Great reaction Daniel. 👍😃😃🎶
Once you get steeped in the best Styx material (from 1972-1982), there's a great full concert posted on RUclips when the original surviving members reunited in 1997 called "Return To Paradise". They sing all the classics in front of their hometown audience in Chicago. See link: ruclips.net/video/Sg6ccWZJo4I/видео.html
"Virgin sea" could mean either that it has not yet been explored, or that the sea is always a virgin. Any boat, no matter how big or powerful, can plow through it, but only leaves a wake that fades, and the sea is left as it always was, unchanged.
I don't think this generation knows about the Music Corporate Wars, from skirmishes fought over the radio waves, Mercury - (RUSH's Spirit of Radio) WB - Black Sabbath, CBS - BOC, Atlantic - Led Zeppelin, Reprise (Capital) - Hendrix. Controlling the music scene thru kick backs and Payola. In LA, Ca. there were only AM radio (KEZY am (kicks ass) and fm (kicks back)) until 1969 when KLOS started and then KMET who fought it out and unfortunately KLOS won, still on the air today. The upside was the first Heavy Metal station (The World Famous) KNAC in Long Beach, Ca. where I live, and is the first to go Online.
Their Masterpiece album top 20 band "Man in the Wilderness" Tommy Shaw is the high voice went on to join Ted Nugent in "The Damn Yankees", and Dennis DeYoung is the lead singer.
"Queen of Spades" from that same album is awesome. "Castle Walls" from their Grand Illusion album has a part in the middle that sounds _EXACTLY_ like the Halloween movie theme, so I'd suggest you do that reaction for your Halloween themed songs.
I take "virgin sea" to mean uncharted waters of life
Virgin Sea? I thought he was saying vergency, all these years. Goodness!
Another couple weeks and you'll have 1977 hair perfected. 🙆🏻
The sheer joy of sitting on the floor by the turntable for hours with my brother in the 70's, our albums of such great bands as this spread all around is, listening to vinyl. WOW.
Little by little, entering the Kansas/Styx/Boston rabbit hole! We all did over 40 years ago. And it was great.
Don't forget... Foreigner...
@@jazzyboy7784 Correct! Blasted them also on cassette in my car all through high school and college and beyond...
You know it!!! :-)

@Damian Israel yea, I have been using instaflixxer for months myself =)
boomer here...Dennis Deyoung on vocal...lovely classic...one of my faves from my teenage years. Just as good now as it was then!!!
Ha, Ha, Ha, I 'm watching the first part of this and I'm saying to myself, "Wait for it......"
This song was GREAT in concert! The whole place singing the song, arms extended into the air. Just fantastic!
Lady is a great song by Styx.
It’s so enjoyable watching a young person hear the music we enjoyed as teenagers. Yes its a beautiful song.
Sixteen! Good for you. You've got a great, thoughtful way of reacting to these songs. It's nice to see a teenager really paying attention to lyrics, music, and willing to try all sorts of music like this. I was about your age when I first heard this song - so great to see your reaction.
You are listening to the music of my late teens and early 20’s! Love it!
Right on. man, I was 16 when I got into Styx and Rush and all of this great music your getting to know.
There will never be an era in music like this again. I like to call it Epic Rock!

I took my 16 years old son to a Styx concert. He had a ball and never forgot it. Oh ,memories, memories
I’m smiling at the sheer joy in this music! And in your adventure into virgin territory.
One of my favorites from Styx....A Truly Amazing Song.
My favorite STYX song!
Styx is my favorite band. I would have pegged you as being older. You are wiser than your years. Oh and virgin = the unsailed sea, the place no one has sailed before.
Part of the soundtrack of late 70s high school.
"The Grand Illusion". Another good one.
"virgin sea".. you nailed it.. new experiences, new challenges, make a life for oneself
They used to play this on the radio. A lot. There was a radio edit with a shortened middle section. Good stuff.
The way your mind paints a picture just from listening to the music is a wonderful blessing. Even when there was no lyrics you really felt the story
I'm enjoying your journey - you pay much closer attention to the music than many of the reactors in here.
My initial Styx recommendations are Crystal Ball, Prelude 12/Suite: Madame Blue, Castle Walls, Blue Collar Man and Queen Of Spades.
Thanks for doing this song. I had forgotten how great the music and lyrics were. The lyrics pretty much speak for themselves.
Dennis Deyoung has his own RUclips channel. Sings these songs from his home.
2 others that are personal favorites. “Crystal Ball” and “Suite Madam Blue”
YES!!!! Also, Queen of Spades.
I think these are their two best songs.
100% agree!
But make sure to listen to
"Prelude 12/Suite Madam Blue"
Prelude 12 is intro with 12 string acoustic guitar and sets the mood for Suite Madam Blue.
Crystal Ball is one of my favorites.

Wow I haven’t heard this song in years and it was so beautiful to hear it again as I watched you react to it!!!
I was your age when I first experienced this music. I was gobsmacked.
Yes, this is Dennis DeYoung singing and on keyboards. He's the one that wanted to take Styx into another direction like rock operas and silly songs.
Boston -more than a feeling is a must. Foreigner -Juke box hero ELO-strange magic

The lead singer on this is Dennis Deyoung.
Many of these musicians were also classically trained, so their musicality is really enhanced and it shows!
Seen them in concert 3 times. Never disappointed
Same!

Pretty straightforward tale of alien abduction. 😂

"Fooling Yourself", YES!! The most uplifting and moving lyrics you might ever hear. No exaggeration.
michael york Love Those Songs too!
I love all the 1970s groups that had slow-starting songs and transitioned to absolute rockers like this one.
RIP to original drummer John Panozzo. His brother Chuck plays bass in band. Styx's long time drummer now is Todd Sucherman. An absolute monster of a player. Probably in top 10 living drummers.
How did I miss this one well I'm here anyway the legion swells near 10k 👍♥️
You are such an intelligent and insightful young man. Your appreciation of great music, dynamics, lyrics is refreshing! Keep on! You have a very bright future!
A song that both lyrically and musically transitions from a sea odyssey to a space odyssey!
Cool Change - Little River Band, Southern Cross - CSN, Sailing - Christopher Cross are other great songs about sailing and the sea.
Procol Harum-- "A Salty Dog" and Loggins and Messina "Sailing the Wind" come to mind, as well as CSNY "The Lee Shore".
Man I'm 31 now but I wish I had your insight at 16! Wise beyond your years for sure. Keep on discovering sick music 🤘
They have so many great songs. You seem to like songs that have both meaning and dynamics. I think you'd enjoy Man in the Wilderness.
If you liked the angelic and/or space theme/vibe, check out Billy Thorpe "Children of the Sun" - lesser known rock classic.
Loved all songs involving sailing - Rael, Closer to Home, Come Sail away - the universal theme of adventure, new beginning and entering the unknown were mana for teenagers searching for meaning and answers. Perfect fodder for poets and musicians. This one really hit home with me in its day.

Always interesting Rock Melodies and vocal harmony with this group
I was 14 when this first came out and I obtained my first copy. It's still awesome. :D
They toured with the group America. America had a song "Horse With No Name" which was kinda cheesy, but "Sister Golden Hair" wasn't bad. If you are doing individuals, check out some blue-eyed soul like the Righteous Brothers.
Freaks and Geeks absolutely the most underrated TV Show. Was the origin of some of the more iconic comedy movies of the new millennium
Excellent reaction. This was my era and my kind of music.
Awesome reaction.
Glad you liked this song! It was and still is a great song! I also think you’d like “And She Was”, by the Talking Heads!
lantie forgot about them. Once in a Lifetime is a must listen too
@@christophmozure9413 I had just listened to it yesterday and it's such an upbeat, happy song! Once in a Lifetime is great but unusual, Burning Down the House along with a few others.
The singer... Dennis Deyoung is the founding member of the band. The current Styx that tours does so without Dennis, the heart of the band.
Fooling yourself is another Styx classic
Thanks Daniel for the great reaction/song facts. 😎 The music industry, gotta love it? ☮🖤🤘
