Yes you can use compressed air to spread although you in short bursts because the inks can fly off the canvas if you use it too close and too much. I have another video on how you seal and varnish alcohol inks - ruclips.net/video/vDLbsWQPQ_8/видео.html
Great video! I'm just wondering if it's possible to prime a canvas with PVA glue (maybe watered down a little)? Easy to buy, cheap and possibly less toxic?
I actually haven't tried that.. I'm wondering what the textured might be like once it's dried and whether the alcohol will break it down at all. Maybe give it a little go first .. let me know if it works ☺️
I'm not sure how the inks will look on top of epoxy, I haven't tried it. You could try it on a really small section of epoxy but then you would need to seal it again after with epoxy. Most water repelling paints should roughly work with this technique, it doesn't need to be this particular brand.
Hey, its a primer not a sealer so you put it under a painting not over - but I haven't experienced any yellowing and on the packaging it does say non-yellowing. Hope that helps!
Using BIN does prepare the canvas well but each time I get settlement marks (don’t know how else to describe them) like thin rivers after it dries all over the surface. Happens on large and small canvas. Does this happen to yours and how to prevent? Thanks
A few ideas to help you with this - sand down the canvas before you start. It could be that the texture on the canvas is causing this to happen. Another idea is to use a foam roller instead of a brush to create an even texture. You could also paint a layer of standard white primer underneath before you use the BIN primer to help with taking away some texture. Lastly, make sure you mix the primer really really well - like maybe 5 minutes as it could be that it is not mixed properly and is separating on the canvas. I hope that helps ☺️👍🏻
Thank you for the tutorial. I love it. Beginner here so I am taking it all in. Question? Can the Kilz 2 available here in California USA be spray can instead of brush on?
Hi Mary, I'm afraid gesso isn't really going to work because it's not waterproof. I'm not sure about the decoupage medium. You could try it but it would have to be quite thick. I think the main thing is that you want the canvas to resist the inks soaking a lot.
Hi, I'm assuming you can but I'm afraid I haven't tried it with the markers myself. I just use Isopropyl to cleaner the brushes. I put a bit in a clean jam jar and leave the brush in it for a while but this is my favourite method if I have time - ruclips.net/video/5spq2anWk_Y/видео.html
Thank you for your tutorial. I do have a suggestion. You can wrap your brush with plastic wrap from the kitchen tightly between coats of primer to save washing between coats. The stays wet and saves an extra step.
Oh my word - that is an amazing tip!! Thank you so much! It takes so long to clean the brushes. I am going to try that next time. Do you use clingfilm?
@@EmmaRave yes, cling wrap, wrapped around the brush, sealing out the air. I learned that from my brother when he was painting inside my house and he needed to take a break.
I do sometimes. Because this was a practice attempt I didn't but if I am doing a large commission I will. I generally paint it with one coat of primer, sand it down and then one more coat of primer :)
That's nice, awesome. Should the alcohol used be always 99/ or can we have lesser combination also 77/ ? What the impact of high percentage of alcohol and low..?
I would suggest using 90% or above. You can use 70% however you might not get all the lovely effects that the higher percentage of alcohol will give. This is because the lower percentage will have a mixture of water and oil in it which can affect the overall "look"and blends of the inks.

I'm afraid I don't know the chemistry side of things but I and a lot of other alcohol ink artists have been using this primer with alcohol inks and it seems to work well and the primer holds up. Maybe it's the double coating that helps It to work ☺️

Hi there! Thank you for your tutoring, it’s very helpful indeed. I was wondering if you ever tried to use the bullseye 123 of the same brand, it’s the water base version of BIN.
Make sure you apply it whilst the insk are still a bit wet so it dries with the inks or you'll have to apply it with "size" glue once the painting has finished drying. Then you can prime once it's dry.
Just keep in mind that alcohol dissolves the bin primer. Even when completely dry. When you apply alcohol ink with a brush or start dipping with a cotton the ink will mix/blend with the dissolved primer.
I came here to say the same thing. I was looking for a canvas primer for alcohol inks, and I was really surprised to see B-I-N suggested here for that purpose.
Only if used in a larger amount and deliberately agitated across the primer with the intent of removing it, surely? Also, I don't know anyone who applies AI with a brush! This minuscule amount of alcohol ink just skirting lightly over the surface of the dried primer won't do anything. If it did, countless artists around the world would've seen their work rapidly deteriorate, as BIN and other similar primers are used by many AI artists.
Thank you for the great tip. I have a question for you. I am new learning about alcohol inks. I just learned about the white because I’ve never seen it in the craft stores I go to. Is white just an ink or is it a mixative?

@@colrn222 it needs to repel water so I would say that pouring medium if it's just plain acrylic won't work that well unless you do a lot of coats. I would suggest buying either what I have in the video or bathroom paint primer.
@@EmmaRave i make concrete benchtops and I want to use these to give the concrete a marbled/ cloudy effect. It would then be sealed with a water based polyurethane.
@@matthewfair8512 Oh I see. I've never tried alcohol inks on that kind of a surface. Maybe try on a small slab to see what it looks like. I know resin works well over alcohol inks so if the polyurethane is anything like epoxy then it should be fine. Sorry I can't be of more help! Let me know if you do it and how it ends up looking.
Hi Thanks for sharing - however - have you had any issue with the primer being stiff once it dries? i.e. slight cracking if pressure is applied to the canvas (not that you should be applying pressure lol). Only asking as I've used a product in Australia called Blitz Quick Seal and it gave a beautifully smooth surface for alcohol inks on the canvas, but you would need to treat the canvas with extreme delicacy to avoid permanent embellishment or slight cracking from unpredictable pressure.
Hi, Thanks for your comment! No, I haven't had any issues with the primer cracking at all. I don't do more than 2 layers of it so it shouldn't be too thick. The only thing with this primer is that it is slightly shiny looking but other than that it works great 👍
One more concern that was raised by another artist on RUclips was that the oil based primers where you need to clean up with methylated spirits, the white can turn yellow.. have you heard the same and experienced it?
@@annamorton3508 I haven't had it done to mine but I know it can happen after years and years. If you are worried, you could do a coat of white over the top and you can buy sealers that are UV resistant or you could resin it 😁

A heat gun isn't the best to use because it doesn't always get hot enough to burst the bubbles and can also blow dust onto the resin so a torch would be better.
Yes I cover a lot of my paintings in resin and I love how they turn out. It's definitely a more difficult process but it looks great over these sort of paintings!
No it's not gesso as you need something that repels water. You could use a lot of layers of gesso which might work but not sure how waterproof it would be.

Thank you for posting this video! Yes, we do have access to Zinser BIN primer /sealers! I actually have a bunch of cans in my basement! Yay! I dont have to buy more supplies!
Beautiful. How do you dilute? What did you add? Can you plz share?
I dilute the inks with isopropyl alcohol to create a softer colour ☺️
I used the bin yesterday and waited an hour but when I startend with a lot of alcohol ink the bin started to get wet again. Did I have to wait langer?
Did you do 2 coats of the primer or just one? Should only need to wait an hour unless it didn't dry properly between layers
hi just asking would it work if i apply acrylic varnish over the top of canvas and then do the alcohol ink?
I'm really sorry but I wouldn't know, I haven't actually tried that. Basically anything that would make the canvas waterproof should in turn work but I'm not sure if you would get any reactions or blends with the inks. Let me know how you get on if you try ☺️
Just an FYI-you can get the BIN by Zinzer in the US
Thanks for letting me know :)
Nice! Appreciate the tips on priming the canvas. Can I use a spray varnish to seal a canvas?
You can put it in a spray bottle like I did but I don't believe they sell this type of varnish in a spray form.
@@EmmaRave Emma! Thank you for your response. The spray I have was recommended to seal and protect. It was recommended by Lorrie Brewer. It's Krylon Karmar Varnish. Will that be ok, or Gesso coats?🥰👍❤❤
@@lizdouglas1952 I haven't used Krylon Karmar vanish but I've heard it's really good for alcohol inks so that should work fine :)
@@EmmaRave You are awesome!! Wonderful!! I'll try it on a small canvas!
🥰👍❤❤❤🌈🎨
@@lizdouglas1952 Let me know how you get on ☺️
Nice vid. Also you’re voice tone and movements are so soft and relaxing to me, it’s giving me ASMR ☺️
Love that! haha
I just got into art and stumbled on this channel and I agree. Not only talented but her voice is wow.
Hi there!
Thank you for your tutoring, it’s very helpful indeed.
I was wondering if you ever tried to use the bullseye 123 of the same brand, it’s the water base version of BIN.
Hi, I'm glad the tutorial helped :)
No, I've never tried it. Have you? Is it any good?
Can you paint with acrylics over the ink?
yes definitely :)
I would like to add gold flakes when can this be done?
Make sure you apply it whilst the insk are still a bit wet so it dries with the inks or you'll have to apply it with "size" glue once the painting has finished drying. Then you can prime once it's dry.
Just keep in mind that alcohol dissolves the bin primer. Even when completely dry. When you apply alcohol ink with a brush or start dipping with a cotton the ink will mix/blend with the dissolved primer.
Maarten Braet if I use kilz on my canvas would I need to sand it down before applying the alcohol ink?
I came here to say the same thing. I was looking for a canvas primer for alcohol inks, and I was really surprised to see B-I-N suggested here for that purpose.
Only if used in a larger amount and deliberately agitated across the primer with the intent of removing it, surely? Also, I don't know anyone who applies AI with a brush! This minuscule amount of alcohol ink just skirting lightly over the surface of the dried primer won't do anything.
If it did, countless artists around the world would've seen their work rapidly deteriorate, as BIN and other similar primers are used by many AI artists.
Hi! What do you clean the brush with please?
I would use white spirit to clean the brushes. Make sure you do it outside or in a well ventilated room because of the fumes 👍🏻
Thank you for the great tip. I have a question for you. I am new learning about alcohol inks. I just learned about the white because I’ve never seen it in the craft stores I go to. Is white just an ink or is it a mixative?
It's not a mixative like the Tim Holtz one, which is why I prefer it - the colour comes out a lot stronger and moe prominent.
I love this! Thank you for sharing. I’ve never done this and would like to know the difference between alcohol ink and India ink please.
Thanks for watching. I'm not too clued up on india india ink but check out this video it might help - ruclips.net/video/5PqGM8ReZ9w/видео.html&feature=share
Use wall primer of asianpaints
Ty Glad I saw this first♥️ can I resin this canvas to seal it if I want to frame it ? Beautiful ty
I’m learning to use a painter mask on amazon 3M and an Apron just added protection♥️
Can I get the primer in the US
Yes you can resin it to seal it 😄 glad you enjoyed the video and I'm happy you're learning new techniques!
@@EmmaRave
Ty.. love ur channel I subscribed also♥️
would Delta Ceramcoat all purpose sealer work on canvas
Nice art 👍 So can I use a Medium for a primer ?
Which medium?
@@EmmaRave I purchased a "Pouring Medium" Will that work ?
@@colrn222 it needs to repel water so I would say that pouring medium if it's just plain acrylic won't work that well unless you do a lot of coats. I would suggest buying either what I have in the video or bathroom paint primer.
Do you just let it set and dry? Or do you eventually put something on it to finish?
I let it set a few days and then I either varnish it or resin it so it protects the inks 👍🏻
Love the tutorial and gorgeous painting. . What do you use to seal the painting to prevent fading please?
Hey, thanks for watching 😁 Check out this video on how I seal my alcohol ink paintings - ruclips.net/video/vDLbsWQPQ_8/видео.html
ive done one or two with gesso
Has it worked with gesso?
Is there anything that could be recommended for concrete benchtops that are quite smooth ?
What do you want to do to them?
@@EmmaRave i make concrete benchtops and I want to use these to give the concrete a marbled/ cloudy effect. It would then be sealed with a water based polyurethane.
@@matthewfair8512 Oh I see. I've never tried alcohol inks on that kind of a surface. Maybe try on a small slab to see what it looks like. I know resin works well over alcohol inks so if the polyurethane is anything like epoxy then it should be fine. Sorry I can't be of more help! Let me know if you do it and how it ends up looking.
Ok thanks will do.
If you are worried, you could do a coat of white over the top and you can buy sealers that are UV resistant or you could resin it 😁
@@EmmaRave thank you so much for your reply. I have Krylon Cover Max and will seal it with that. Says it's non yellowing. 😊
@@annamorton3508 perfect sounds great!
Love this tip! I'm in the US and kilz is readily available out here so thank you so much for the tip!
Perfect! I'm so pleased that's helped 😁
Is that a glossy primer? Do they have them at Menards or Home Depot?
What if your canvas is already gessoed already?
I would sand it down slightly and then you can reapply new primer for the alcohol inks x
Is it necessary to prime canvas or can we use directly the inks and blending solution
Yes it's necessary to prime the canvas otherwise the inks will just bleed/soak right through the canvas.
@@EmmaRave
Can you tell me with what it must be treated because kilz2 and Bin is not available in my country so can we use gesso or any other thing?
@@nehajamdade2983 try and find a paint that is water repellent. Maybe something in the bathroom paints section? not gesso it won't work well
@@EmmaRave Thanks it helped a lot❤️❤️❤️
thanks fo rthe video. do you know how i can make that black?
i mean have a black surface or any color insted of white.
Yes just mix some black pigment into the white primer
@@EmmaRave thank you so much and you think pigment will work ?
@@golpiramirzazadeh8792 Yes definitely!
Which alcohol did u use?
I used a mixture but mainly Tim Holtz inks. I have put links in the description below to the ones I use
This was quite pleasant to watch actually and I appreciate the tip about hop to prep the canvas. We do have BIN here in Canada as well. Thank you for your tutorial.
I'm pleased the video helped! Thanks for watching ☺️
I wonder if any white latex paint would work. I am going to try that. Thanks for the inspiration!
I'm sure it will to be honest - as long as it is repelling water.
Please keep your videos coming. Your work is beautiful and I love your step by step explanations 💛
Thank you! 😊
Hi thank you for the information that was super helpful. Quick question, is there other dealerships can be used and what should I look for in them. Thanks
Sorry I don't know quite what you mean by dealerships?
Hi Emma
I tryed the sealer you use, but have had a bad result. The alcohol melted the sealer so all ended not to be good...have you ever had this problem?
Hi Paola, I'm really sorry to hear that. I've never had that problem. Did you use the exac same products I used? with the Tim Holtz inks?
Does water color paper work?
no not really - it needs to be completely waterproof
Great canvas tips! Thank you! I would’ve liked to have seen your finished piece.... but I think this is just perfect the way it is! Do you seal it? 💕🙋♀️
Yes I do seal my alcohol inks with Krylon Kamar Varnish :) Thanks!
Thank you!!! Just beautiful work!!!
Lots of people also use a coat or 2 of krylon UV to protect from fading, because apparently the inks are quite susceptible to fading without it.
@@EmmaRave Emma, may I ask where you purchase your Kamar Varnish? Thanks
@@bodissimusable I just get mine from Amazon if I can find it. Not easy to buy in the UK.
Do you still need to prime a canvas specially made for alcohol ink?
You shouldn't have to if it's been made especially for alcohol ink. Does it say what it's been primed with?
does this work when using a heat gun?
A heat gun isn't the best to use because it doesn't always get hot enough to burst the bubbles and can also blow dust onto the resin so a torch would be better.
Wow just found you today, really inspired me and appreciate all you great information. You are really talented. Subscribed.
Aww thanks! That's really nice of you to say. Hope you enjoy the videos ☺️
Just about to start on canvas, this has been so helpful! x
I'm so pleased, hope it goes well!
I know this late, but have you ever cover it with epoxy resin? Great tutorial and to the point.
Yes I cover a lot of my paintings in resin and I love how they turn out. It's definitely a more difficult process but it looks great over these sort of paintings!
Beautiful I would love to try I will give it a go soon
Do you sell most of your work or do you do it as a hobby to give as gifts?
I mainly sell my art or do commissions for clients but most of the art I do for my RUclips channel I give as gifts 😊
you are amazing Your hand so perfect.Just a request can you list down all the items that were used.
Hey, thanks for watching! If you look in the description of the video, you will see links to everything I used in the video 😊
Hi is it gesso?
No it's not gesso as you need something that repels water. You could use a lot of layers of gesso which might work but not sure how waterproof it would be.
This was a great tutorial- exactly what I needed- thankyou
I'm so pleased!!
How would you seal this??
So I'm assuming gesso isn't a strong enough primer ?
No it's not waterproof enough I'm afraid
do you sand the canvas to
Sometimes I do if I want a really smooth surface but otherwise you don't really need to.
Thanks for sharing this tip . I did ruin my canvas making coasters
Why not use artist Gesso?
It needs to be waterproof. Gesso would provide a certain amount of coverage but the ink would still soak into it.
@@EmmaRave Acrylic gesso
@@elpasomark3069 you could try it, I've never done it with inks I'm afraid
