The key to being a good mountain biker is knowing how to use the front brake effectively, it can either crash you or save you depending on how you use it.

I think a lot of that fear comes from learning to bike as a kid. As a child you're much lighter so it's a lot riskier using the front break. We probably all have a memory of flying over the handle bars from panicking and grabbing a fistful of front break. As long as you don't make a sharp turn or lockup the wheel it works well now.
@@TheGenericAssasin For me it came from a story of my dad going downhill and flying over the front and him telling me to not use my front brake, I started using both when I locked up my rear wheel fully going downhill and almost slid out, now I have control over both at all times.

Biggest fear of using front brake on bike comes from old bikes, If you think about that, front brakes were introduced to normal people around 25-30 years ago when most bikes had stiff front fork with less lean angle and it were v-brakes with full fist break levers, so you had no gradual compression of front fork to increase traction, rim brakes that had very big leverage and were quite strong with very weak braking power modulation and it was easy to grab brake levers with full power of your fist.
mine was back when i was 8 and was going downhill in a big dirt parking lot, wanted to turn to avoid crashing into the barrier at the end but saw a car coming towards me from the side so i hit the brakes (or brake, i think i just hit the front one) can't remember what happened but i woke up screaming on the ground, i had massive rash on my face, got a concussion and broke a front tooth (although the dentist at the clinic thought it simply got loose and got it back in, he pressed on it for two or three hours to get it to stay in place, and as a result i still have the tooth even though it's broken in the gum), and i think my helmet got split by the impact i didn't go back to that spot for years lol, but kept biking and bought my first *real* mountain bike about a year and a half ago

It’s due to the area and street laws regarding which side they drive on. In America, we drive on the right side of the street, and use our left hand to signal our turns. The idea is that the hand still in the bike would grab rear brake instead of front. In countries where you drive on the left, you’d use your right hand to indicate a turn, and use your left hand for rear brake.
