    Genius. I thought I knew all this stuff but every time I hear it I learn something! Also one of the things I found revolutionary was to make your swatch with running scrap yarn markers at the number of stitches that you are supposed to have for gauge and then measure the space between them to see if it's 4 inches or whatever it's supposed to be or not. I find I can be way more accurate than holding my ruler to my swatch and counting the stitches

      That is an especially good approach if you are swatching in pattern for something like lace. Lace gauge can be very difficult to count. As I said, there is soooo much more to talk about with gauge LOL!

    I’m in the process of developing a sweater workshop and will absolutely be incorporating this info and linking the video in the resources I provide for the participants! This is so helpful!!

    Since I learned to properly swatch, I am so much more confident in my knitting it’s amazing! I don’t think most knitters know that when a pattern states knit to X number of inches/centimeters it means knit to a blocked length! (I just found this out a few years ago.). So now that I know how many rows per inch I have on my blocked swatch, I can calculate how many rows I need to do to get the correct length for my garment. Thanks!

      That is definitely one of the hidden knowledge knitting issues. It's not as simple as pulling out your measuring tape ... so much math in knitting

    Thanks, Barbara ! I found what you said is true in the knitting projects I have done.
    Needles are not so interchangeable, especially DPN and circular.😊reminders are good.

    Your videos are always so helpful and so fun! Watching this as I work on a lace top. I had a lot of trouble figuring out how to measure my lace gauge, so if you're wanting to talk more about gauge I'd love to listen to it!

    I have never made a swatch, but now I’m going to. I usually only make thing that don’t have a gage need. Thanks so much for all your advice!❤ 25:08

    The sweater I'm knitting called for a gauge swatch over a cable panel. It wasn't easy counting the stitches.

      No, that is a pain. When you have that it is often easier to measure the motif and then do some math based on knowing the number of stitches in the motif.

    I started doing swatches because all my sweaters are expanding ad infinitum and I am so fedup ! But then I thought this is not so much the fiber that is expanding but rather the textile I am producing. Is it correct ? Also I started spinning because I want to understand ! Thank you Barbara, love your videos !

    • @WatchBarbaraKnit
      @WatchBarbaraKnit  Месяц назад +1

      It could be a bit of both but yes, a looser gauge is going to "expand" more than a tight gauge. Thanks for watching!
