35 lb packs.... about killed us.
That's why it was a History Lesson now...

Dan. I'm new to backpacking in general and I'm already swayed towards being an ultralighter but with comfort. I'm not sacrificing everything just to save a couple grams. Sleeping under a tarp with ants all over me is not ideal. I appreciate all the budget options and made many of my considerations of gear based on your inputs.
I for one am not a long distance hiker but I am a hunter who backpacks in and I like the gear reviews form Dan. Keep Going Dan.

You have a great channel and are a great down to earth guy. The haters have nothing better to do. There are sometimes when I read a comment and just ponder, why. I think Dan came a long way. At first glance he came on the space decked out in acrteryx and seeming just a tad pretentious in a sense. He served his time and seeing more videos of him actually being on trail getting in the thick of it works for me.

In all honestly, I watch a lot of your videos, cause I like them. But I don't trust your reviews. It's probably happened slowly over time that you do come off like a guy selling sponsors' gear. I didn't feel that way at first, but the more I watch, the more I get that sense. If not coming off that way is something that matters, you might want to cool off on the sponsorships. But what do I know? You're running a successful You Tube channel and I'm not...good for you. Keep up the good work.

Anyone who knows anything about editing and how hard it is...knows Emmitt is amazing. Don't change anything Emmitt.... you perfectly time stuff. Your humor comes out thru video which is....incredible. And I can tell you have OCD which I mean as a compliment. People edit videos and forget stuff all the time. It's not professional. In preparation for my first solo backcountry hunt in two weeks your videos have been INSTRUMENTAL in my preparation. I didn’t grow up camping and have had to learn this on my own and am truly grateful for your videos or else I would have never known about half of the items that are now in my pack. Sadly, that is the world we now live in. It's easy for cowards to hide behind their keyboards and be mean. Back in the day if you wanted to be mean to somebody you had to do it to their face and then suffer the possible consequences ( ie: five across your lips. )

Dan, I have been watching your videos for a few yrs now. I just finished one of your videos about water in Egypt, with the help of Sawyer, or vice versa maybe. You seemed like a pretty decent fellow prior to that, but I am quite moved. I have never seriously considered Sawyer, as I really like the Gravity Works ideas. I will revisit Sawyer now, and explore opportunities to help this seriously important work. Neal

GREAT INFO, GREAT ATTITUDE. People that hate are very unhappy with themselves. My hiking partner and I have a saying-THE THREE MILE AND 8am RULE. In short, people that hike seriously and have a decent pack are almost always a friendly, willing to share info and just a really good person. We hike a lot at Mt. Rainier and we have yet to be proven wrong. Keep up the good work. Your humor is an added benefit.

I'll pick the fight. You receive hate mainly for three reasons. First, you're fast rising and people are jealous. Second, you advertise like a professional which suggests a corporation is secretly pulling your strings (even if that's not the case). Third, you are dismissive of others while portraying a polite mentality which comes off as if you're lying to some.
Still good content, and I haven't bought a peace of gear you've recommended that's been anything but the best I've ever used; Helium Rain Jacket, Starfire UL, Ventus, and Nemo Tensor Alpine. I'll give credit where credit is due.
Dan, I'm 74 and been backpacking since the early 70's. I always learn something from your videos and always get a laugh or two as well. Dan, watching your videos got me the nudge I needed to go outdoors and start backpacking again. Even went car camping with my 4 y-o son thanks to your videos and some of the gear you recommended. So thank you for it.
That being said, if my wife knew exactly how much our brand new equipment cost, she might file for divorce 😂! We're lucky enough to have plenty of disposable income, and I'm a big fan of the "buy less, buy better" motto, but this also mean I do often opt for the pricier option instead of going cheap to "see how it goes". And this even tho we're still beginners.

Dan - I see you do a lot of gear reviews, but I never see you talk about solo backpacking/camping. I am curious because I'd like to get into backpacking but have nobody to go with at the moment. I was wondering if you go solo backpacking ever, and if not, do you recommend it at all? If you do go solo, does your gear setup change when you do? For example, one other channel recommended taking a little extra food when solo backpacking as a precaution.

I am teaching my kids that humanity overall can be and do great things. But there will be the hate out there. Glad you don't worry about these comments. I had my first experience with folks just being general trolls when I posted a question on Craigslist back in the aughts. More helpful comments than unhelpful, but didn't know at the time folks can be dingleberries so readily.

You handle this perfectly, with a grin, a good laugh, make fun of yourself a bit, and move on. If you engage the trolls they just want more food. Though I did not find any of these comments that trolling. Yeah, I also get the idea of hiking not really possible where you live. I have traveled through and around Wisconsin as a teenager, it is much like Denmark. Flat, flat and flat with relatively small forested areas. Your videos have given me the confidence, that I can actually afford to get out on the trail and enjoy myself. Not to be afraid that I cannot afford the lightest and most expensive gear out there, that I can do it on my budget. So let the haters hate, and the jokers giving it back to you make you laugh.

I love watching content makers react to their hate comments. It's so funny to see the (usually poor) writers try and justify a hate comment. They loaded the video, they gave it views, then they took the time to write a junk comment. Who's the idiot then? You just get to make a video from them and get more views aka more cash for it!
