I've taken a new approach since I watched your videos in the black gi doing Kata. In the karate dojo if you don't perform like the original way of striking, stances and posture they consider it wrong. I'm training on my own now. I feel more free training the way you teach, it feels like a real fight while performing the Kata. Not worried about the traditional posture. It feels more natural.
@eddienegrino8348 I have been in organizations where I can't think outside the box. It is unfortunate, but in order to be good, you need to be realistic. What good does it do for your karate if you can't get it to work? My training motto is Train to Understand, Don't train for ranks!
@@continuousfist I totally agree!! The way you teach it makes Karate effective for real fighting, and that way people don't need leave Karate and go to MMA or Boxing etc. To find something effective. Karate works if taught properly.
@eddienegrino8348 I am sad to see students leaving karate schools to join MMA nowadays. I truly believe any style can be effective, but only if we make our students understand what they are learning. If they only follow directions without allowing them to challenge what is taught, then we are indirectly asking them to leave the dojo. Students stay and remain loyal only when they know this stuff works. I might do a video on this.
@@continuousfist Agree, Karate schools are empty because of this. The karate schools today only survive teaching toddlers and kids. Looking forward to your videos. Thanks
The main reason we practice against the straight punch is that it's the most direct and time efficient punch, which makes us practice that much harder and faster, so when someone comes in with a haymaker or a round punch, we are so used to defending against a straight punch it makes it easier to defend against a round punch. Also, the straight punch simulates someone poking you in the chest or grabbing your shirt collar. I fought full contact no protection for ten years, and I say from personal experience that a lot of people do come in with straight punches. Man, those Shotokan people have it mastered, front kick followed with a straight punch, and they are GOOD at it. I had someone try to stab me with a knife once, they came it with the basic punch, only difference was that they came in with a knife instead of a closed fist, and I was able to defend against it from years of training defense against straight punches. Katas and forms do work, people just don't understand the purpose behind them. They are no different than a NFL football team practicing plays all week, and adjusting and tweaking them on Sunday's game to fit what the other team is doing. Same thing. What people don't understand is that forms are fluid, and are designed to adjust to the current situation. They are not rigid and mechanical.
@@continuousfist Thanks for answering, I wasn’t trying to nerd rage or anything like that. I just wanted to clarify why we teach defending against the straight punch. I love your channel by the way.
@blockmasterscott I certainly understand your point and I love it. Please continue to share your thoughts. It would give me ideas for putting out more videos. 🙏
Great information of true karate, most of karate instructors concentrate in having a straight posture to look pretty in Kata. This pattern of thought gives freedom, and it becomes applicable in reality. Great video.
It is important not to mix kata for the dojo and fighting for the street. As a karateka, I truly believe in providing honest opinion so that we can train effectively.
Thank you for your support. My goal is to reach to all passionate karate practitioners so that they can enjoy working out in the dojo and knowing to be confident in a confrontational setting.
I have heard about Shorei Ryu Karate. My grandfather took up Shorei Ryu Karate during the World War in 1948. Now I want to learn it and finish what he started
I have to keep in mind the blocks /punches have more power with body sinking. That slip off my mind all the time. Now I have the video to remind me. Thank you!!
Can I use Shoto Oke or Uchi Oke and... to defend the head? Why is 99% of the defense in karate defined for the chodan part? Head defense is defined only judan uke?
Most attacks are to the head. You can either knife hand high block or close fist high block. Watch my other videos on the "8 blocks that you need to know." Thank you for watching.
Katas are training devices, to practice. They were never intended as fight recipes. It is like Lego kits. They give you lots of katas on how to build this or that. But in the end, you assemble the bricks to create whatever you need. But you learn how to build with them by following the patterns first
Indeed and I am 100% in agreement. The only problem I see is that many schools are emphasizing these katas are for fighting, which I think why students are confused and ended leaving to join MMA instead.
Excuse my sir but advancing punch its not a lunge punch(oi tsuki)and not thr reverse punch(gyakutsuki)? In the kata you are calling the lunge punch "reverse":i am cinfused.
You are 1000% correct!!! They would rather break your chin than your rib cage. I was showing this one because Fukyugata ichi has a low block. I just want to emphasize how to do a low block with power and less effort versus the "kata" way.
I was wanting to give this video a chance because I truly love your follow along videos for a good workout. I am not sure where you are getting your information on how criminals attack people in violent altercations, but I have seldom, if ever, seen a criminal attack the way you say they do, ‘with an uppercut.’ That is not to detract from your defense against it, this is partially good, but failing to take into account keeping your guard up on the other side to defend against another incoming punch. There are plenty of videos from CCTV cameras out there of violent altercations that you can study. I would suggest studying them. I work in Law Enforcement, I have been in violent encounters. Please do your homework first before making an instructional video on this stuff. Kata DOES work, but not really in the way one thinks… Thinking is a hindrance to action and getting overly complicated with principles is a hindrance under pressure of adrenal stress that can lead to a freeze reaction and get people hurt or killed.
I love your comment. If we have a discussion, of course, it would be lengthy and I would agree with your point. In violent encounters, anything can happen. My example is one of many. Thank you very much for watching!
Is the grand master telling us there are no karate secrets in the Shaolin Temples? I find it hard to believe. One person told me they have discovered(the Monks) that you can accidentally kill someone with the same move in the afternoon easier than in the morning. That's a secret, isn't it?
Maestro than anything I see you better practice Hsing-I kung fu because it already has everything you show for street fighting. Your karate is for children and the practice itself is not very practical for fighting. The problem with karate and other martial arts is that they don't cross swords with other styles but only associate with the same styles. Karate vs karate, boxing vs boxing etc. Only when you compare different systems do you see how effective your style really is.... I like your videos very much. 🤩🤩🤩🤩
Let me know of your thoughts on how you train at your dojo and how kata is trained for fighting purposes.

On street fights, they always punch to the face, I rarely see thugs punch below its always to the face.

What are you talking about? The more katas a person does, the stronger he becomes.
Katas are great for cardio. Thanks for watching.
