@@sync5043 It is roughly 4ft by 3ft so quite substantial. It is fantastic to see it in the room then go close up to see how loose the brushstrokes actually are to the point it looks like just a jumble of colours.
Beautiful drawing Stephen! I very much enjoyed watching. I would like to mention here that whenever one makes a master copy and feels they didn't quite capture the naturalism of the original, it's always important to remember that the original was painted from a living model that has been interpreted by the artist. A copy is always an interpretation of an interpretation so it's natural that the copy will lack some of the feeling of life that's apparent in the original.
"....This is the 'hunt' for proportion." Don't know why that struck me so ...maybe the poetry of it, I'm not sure. But that phrase will forever be in my head when I start a drawing/painting and how to go about mapping things out. He seems like a good teacher/instructor.
Was this Study tipping point for me to join Stephen Bauman on PATREON, I am not sure. But as with this Sargent "sample" packed with tons of great insight and information - The Atelier Tier as well has fantastic learning curve for many aspiring artists with at least some basic foundation in drawing and painting. Surprising level of easy to follow narrative and guidance from Stephen and great video quality will keep you glued to your screen, you can mark my word for it. Rare finding anywhere on web, in this quality let alone price bracket.
@1:04 There's a Matsuo Basho saying that I like to tell my students that sums up your approach to this project the best. It goes, "Do not seek to follow in the footsteps of the wise; seek what they sought."
Love your videos. Question? Why free hand Pencil draw her ? Just get 'a poster'( size of your painting) from a photo of the painting and trace(lay poster on carbon paper on canvas) then you ll have an 'exact copy' and all in proportion!!! Also trick is to slightly spray varnish on face at least so you dont smudge or lose lines as you paint. Thanks
I am lucky enough to live 15 minutes walk from this painting and visit it often, it is an incredible work of art!
How big is the painting?

Thanks, Richard! Thats a valid approach. I like to find the drawing this way.
Totally understand. Just an alternative Keep up great work. Cheers
Brilliant. I wish my professors at art school liked Sargent instead of some pointless abstract expressionists.
Same here.
I agree....21 years ago that is what they wanted.
A good art professor is supposed to like and teach about both.
Wonderful. I really like Oil painting, but I think's it's too advanced for me.
Gotta start sometime ;)
