This Dirt Bike Training Was the Hardest Thing I've EVER Done on a Motorcycle

  • This past weekend was the hardest thing I've ever done on a motorcycle. I signed up for the Shane Watts Dirt Wise dirt bike training because I always want to improve my skills and learning from a former world champion enduro racer seemed like a great way to do that. I was not prepared for the absolute butt kicking I was about to receive over the course of two days. I was so over my head at this off road motorcycle training.
I entered the weekend 100% sure I'd never do a stoppie, a wheelie, or ride my motorcycle over a 2 foot log and by Sunday afternoon I had done all of those things and more multiple times on my Honda CRF250F. I always recommend that people get as much off road motorcycle training as possible to increase their safety and enjoyment when riding dual sport and adventure motorcycles but I was in no way prepared for how far I was going to stretch my personal comfort zone at this training.

Props on doing the hard thing! re: Your venting at ~10 minutes - I used to road race sportbikes. The skills learned there never really directly applied to riding on the street, but getting into an exit ramp too fast, or having to brake hard because someone stops for no reason in front of you, etc. and knowing that you're really only operating at 50% of what you're capable - because you've put yourself and the bike to the test in a safe environment - is a HUGE confidence booster. So even if you never have to wheelie over any 2 ft logs in the future, every 8-12 inch log is going to feel like an absolute piece of cake. =)

This is definitely one of those deals where it sucks in the moment but he'll be incredibly happy/proud at the end. Like you said 75% of the logs and obstacles he's going to come across now will be easy peasy for him. I wish I had the money and classes around me to be able to do a class like this

As a fellow try hard that enjoys being challenged, this was so fun to watch. You demonstrated the benefit of coaching and formal education. Having a coach show their confidence in you can really help you press on in situations that you would have otherwise quit had you been on your own. None of these skills come naturally. Everyone has to start as an amateur. For me, that’s what really keeps riding exciting. Being a beginner is scary, but being intermediate is reinvigorating. Keep having fun, Ben!
